I mean, brostep sucks and everything, but that's a fun jam to dance to.

That said, the chainsaw bits are completely unnecessary in the context of the song. Would have been better as a simple electro cover.

Oh wow, adult swim (Cartoon Network's for older viewers block of cartoons/shows shown late night) has a compilation they have tagged as "dubstep." They seem to have fallen on the not-brostep side of things. The not-dubstep side of things, too.

adult swim + scion a/v/

fauxmarc, Monday, 26 September 2011 19:55 (fourteen years ago)

scion has it's paws up in a lot of that scene.

fauxmarc, Monday, 26 September 2011 19:55 (fourteen years ago)

I know, I instinctively cringe when I see that sponsorship on things but this is.... not mixed by some random dude and has some decent music?

so i had sex with a piñata (mh), Monday, 26 September 2011 19:56 (fourteen years ago)

I wasn't aware of what they sponsored now, but from past experience and being bombed by horrible promo cds I have a lot of preconceptions

so i had sex with a piñata (mh), Monday, 26 September 2011 19:56 (fourteen years ago)

not denigrating, just saying, it's a line-up i'd expect with scion's involvement. - the artists scion selects to do work with are pretty good and it's cool that they setup events/parties (albeit they tend to be underpromoted on scion's part at times). issue with promo discs is usually people consciously leaving their lesser work for them (can't blame them).

fauxmarc, Monday, 26 September 2011 20:00 (fourteen years ago)

That's cool, I just remember some dodgy promo discs being thrown around when Scion first appeared as a brand to the point where there were stacks of them sitting in every record store, at every event, and you'd get two or three at a music festival.

so i had sex with a piñata (mh), Monday, 26 September 2011 20:14 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i can't really think of another company that's been as knee-deep in the sponsoring of electronic music. i remember when it first came out it was the offish "rave car" or whatever

fauxmarc, Monday, 26 September 2011 20:21 (fourteen years ago)

Red Bull Music Academy!

so i had sex with a piñata (mh), Monday, 26 September 2011 20:39 (fourteen years ago)

EXCEPT FOR RED BULL MUSIC ACADEMY

they sort of gloss over as they same in my head "SHINY! RAVE!" when i'm not thinking about it

fauxmarc, Monday, 26 September 2011 20:43 (fourteen years ago)

and actually i hadn't realized rbma has been around for as long as it has dealing in these kinds of (the non-bro-y) producers

fauxmarc, Monday, 26 September 2011 20:44 (fourteen years ago)

Didn't Adult Swim have some sort of involvement with Major Lazer and Flying Lotus videos in recent times? That tracklisting does look rather good.

ha ha ha ha jack my swag (boxedjoy), Monday, 26 September 2011 21:24 (fourteen years ago)

One of the Tim and Eric guys directed videos for both, I believe.

Someone I don't know on youtube just sent me a link to: "Laura Warwick - Losing You (Chill Dubstep Remix by S.J.P)"

Should I listen to it?

Cal Jeddah (_Rudipherous_), Wednesday, 28 September 2011 20:53 (fourteen years ago)

I have no idea who that is, what it is, etc.

Why me I wonder? I must have liked Katy on a Mission or something.

Am I the only person who finds it amusing that people are just now realizing that Skrillex collaborated with Korn, when the song's been out since April?

MarkoP, Thursday, 29 September 2011 17:05 (fourteen years ago)

...there's certain things not worth bragging about knowing, that's probably one of them

James Blake grousing in pitchfork:

“I think the dubstep that has come over to the US, and certain producers-- who I can't even be bothered naming-- have definitely hit upon a sort of frat-boy market where there's this macho-ism being reflected in the sounds and the way the music makes you feel. And to me, that is a million miles away from where dubstep started. It's a million miles away from the ethos of it. It's been influenced so much by electro and rave, into who can make the dirtiest, filthiest bass sound, almost like a pissing competition, and that's not really necessary. And I just think that largely that is not going to appeal to women. I find that whole side of things to be pretty frustrating, because that is a direct misrepresentation of the sound as far as I'm concerned.”

strawman argument

sissy argument

And I just think that largely that is not going to appeal to women

sexist argument

Sounds like an excuse for the weak, anaemic "blubstep" of his own album.

i don't know many dubstep fans irl, but it never really struck me as a genre that had an exorbitant amount of female fans

of course it has (maybe not exorbitant whatever the quantifier for that is) but a good amount

fauxmarc, Thursday, 29 September 2011 18:22 (fourteen years ago)

also from what i can tell, girls really like stadium dubstep raves

james blake just offtm in general

yung huma (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 29 September 2011 18:23 (fourteen years ago)

I'd imagine Skrillex has more female fans than James Blake does. Granted, he obviously has a lot more fans in general

should expand the nomenclature of brostep to be less sexist.

Feel like Blake was on the right track for a second and then totally lost it... Someone on twitter wrote that maybe dubstep is our nu-metal. But maybe it's more like metal, i.e. a broad genre with tons of shitty stuff and a few gems. And dismissing it entirely is like saying "I don't like metal (or electronic music, or rap, or whatever)". I mean, I can understand not liking any of it, but dismissing all of it because of bro-step icons like Skrillex, who are really just continuations of 2k5 screamo, is ridiculous.

HANDSTAND, Thursday, 29 September 2011 19:21 (fourteen years ago)

could it be like saying "i don't like trance" because really i'm always fine with saying that

fauxmarc, Thursday, 29 September 2011 19:33 (fourteen years ago)

with this Skrillex/Korn collab I almost want to call it (or Skrillex's stuff at least) "mall-step" now

on an unrelated note, saw a twink wearing silver aviators, diesel jeans, a red bandana and a black t-shirt w/ LISTEN TO DUBSTEP printed on it in silver foil, in a crowded gay bar at 4 pm on a saturday. they were not playing DUBSTEP at the bar.
