Agreed, the producers one sounds dope.

My hetfield very root with me what can I lou? (rustic italian flatbread), Thursday, 22 September 2011 17:37 (fourteen years ago)

Eric says he's going to start Stevie voting any day now, but I'm already listening and making mental notes.

Antonio Carlos Broheem (WmC), Thursday, 22 September 2011 17:42 (fourteen years ago)

Stevie will open today, I hope.

michael assbender (Eric H.), Thursday, 22 September 2011 17:46 (fourteen years ago)

I've got a long drive tomorrow, and am burning an mp3 cd from Where I'm Coming From through to Songs In The Key Of Life in anticipation. Time to find out what all the fuss is about.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 22 September 2011 18:06 (fourteen years ago)

can i grap 39 for motown singles. also can someone remember when 39 comes around to remind me i said this.

Master Blaster (Pollin'): ILM Artist Poll #9 -- Stevie Wonder (Closes: Oct. 10)

michael assbender (Eric H.), Thursday, 22 September 2011 18:23 (fourteen years ago)

I'd extend beyond SITKOL, btw. At least bump Hotter Than July in there too.

michael assbender (Eric H.), Thursday, 22 September 2011 18:24 (fourteen years ago)

I'll get on it, thanks

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 22 September 2011 18:34 (fourteen years ago)

jaysus crust, 2.5 weeks for the Stevie voting?

Antonio Carlos Broheem (WmC), Thursday, 22 September 2011 19:27 (fourteen years ago)

Sorry, didn't know what the standard is. I'm fine if a mod wants to cut it down to just 2 weeks.

michael assbender (Eric H.), Thursday, 22 September 2011 19:31 (fourteen years ago)

Most of the voting periods have been 7-10 days, but I'm loath to set any hard and fast rules on these. I'm just keeping the list.

Antonio Carlos Broheem (WmC), Thursday, 22 September 2011 19:41 (fourteen years ago)

Sorry, I just wanted to make sure I get at least 50 ballots.

michael assbender (Eric H.), Thursday, 22 September 2011 19:43 (fourteen years ago)

Ok, if there's going to be a Motown poll there has got to be a Stax poll. I'll do it.

psychedelicatessen (seandalai), Friday, 23 September 2011 00:13 (fourteen years ago)

Love the idea of those happening back to back! (two years from now)

Johnny Fever, Friday, 23 September 2011 04:17 (fourteen years ago)

jaysus crust, 2.5 weeks for the Stevie voting?

Yes. Can we speed the voting up on these? 10 days sounds about right.

kornrulez6969, Friday, 23 September 2011 13:48 (fourteen years ago)

31. Miles Davis - WmC
32. Velvet Underground solo careers - iatee
33. Madonna - or something
34. The Fall - Mark G
35. PJ Harvey - Nasty, Brutish & Short
36. Cocteau Twins - Le Bateau Ivre
37. New Order - Bee OK
38. Sonic Youth - ArchCarrier
39. Motown Singles - a hoy hoy
40. Stax Singles - seandalai

actually this is an incredible sequence i am super excited about. maybe not the fall.

Ravaging Rick Rude (a hoy hoy), Friday, 23 September 2011 13:49 (fourteen years ago)

I'll put in a mod request to shorten the voting period to Oct. 3. But if I end up with 12 ballots, I'm cancelling the results.

michael assbender (Eric H.), Friday, 23 September 2011 13:51 (fourteen years ago)

people are pretty last minute w/ these things, w/ 2.5 weeks you'll just have a week where you get no ballots

iatee, Friday, 23 September 2011 13:52 (fourteen years ago)

Wow, that is an amazing list. That Sonic Youth poll is going to end up being harder than Led Zeppelin for me. Really looking forward to the results of those Motown and Stax polls too, imagine that there are some real gems in there that I haven't heard.

grandavis, Friday, 23 September 2011 13:55 (fourteen years ago)

I don't know if you'll get 50, but you'll get enough to have a fun results rollout and some discussion/debate about consensus picks, and that's what these things are all about imo.

Antonio Carlos Broheem (WmC), Friday, 23 September 2011 14:01 (fourteen years ago)

The dud polls (from my pov) are quite well spaced out to give me one-week-off-in-three type of thing, but I'm going to need extra stamina for this run:

12. Kate Bush - Le Bateau Ivre
13. James Brown - strongo
14. Jacksons - Jamie_ATP
15. David Bowie - chap
16. Paul Simon - Lamp
17. Rolling Stones - rogermexico

Ismael Klata, Friday, 23 September 2011 14:49 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, and for me that run also includes producers, Pulp and the Kinks. I will rest during Depeche Mode, ABBA and Fleetwood Mac

gospodin simmel, Friday, 23 September 2011 15:04 (fourteen years ago)

The only one I'm not looking forward to is the Neptunes poll; I couldn't bring myself to listen to a week of R&B for the Timbaland poll, and from what I know of them I expect Neptunes will be more of the same.

I only know the Cure and Sonic Youth discographies forward and back; the other artists more (GBV, Bowie) or less (Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode, especially Miles), and I love these polls because of the systematic listening I really don't do often enough. (Hope I'm still as enthusiastic in 2013 as I am now, though...)

ArchCarrier, Friday, 23 September 2011 16:24 (fourteen years ago)

I love these polls because of the systematic listening I really don't do often enough.

Really, this. I'm giving a slightly better quality of attention to my listening these days, and listening outside my usual comfort-food zone.

Antonio Carlos Broheem (WmC), Friday, 23 September 2011 17:02 (fourteen years ago)

yeah I like how this sorta became an 'ILM theme week'...also a good way for people to fill in mental gaps / learn more about an artist they're only sorta familiar with. I imagine the guided by voices poll results will be perfect for that.

iatee, Friday, 23 September 2011 17:09 (fourteen years ago)

Plus, it finally gives me the chance to actually use the headphones I got last year!

ArchCarrier, Friday, 23 September 2011 17:10 (fourteen years ago)

ArchCarrier, Saturday, 24 September 2011 08:04 (fourteen years ago)

ugh @ you guys rushing the stevie poll

some dude, Saturday, 24 September 2011 11:13 (fourteen years ago)

so I need to wait until the Stevie Wonder results start rolling out before I do the Producers one yes...?

someone should really step up and do XTC imho

unorthodox economic revenge (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 28 September 2011 20:26 (fourteen years ago)

getting pretty excited to talk about PULP! for two straight weeks!

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Wednesday, 28 September 2011 20:32 (fourteen years ago)

Is there going to be a nominations thread for the producers or is straight into the voting? If the former then start the noms anytime now, otherwise wait until Eric starts rolling the results out.

a name i dont know enough about and would like to see maybe is tom waits

straight into voting. of course, there will be a "voting" thread where people can discuss their nominations etc. unlike all the other polls, this will be the only one that is not genre-specific, so I'm hoping to get a fairly broad discussion going but eh who knows

unorthodox economic revenge (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 28 September 2011 21:03 (fourteen years ago)

maybe that wasn't clear - I am not planning on having everyone nominate a bunch of names and then restricting people's votes to that particular list. there will be a voting thread, where people can lobby for whatever they want and discuss who they will vote for. that thread will close and then there will be a results thread.

unorthodox economic revenge (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 28 September 2011 21:05 (fourteen years ago)

so I need to wait until the Stevie Wonder results start rolling out before I do the Producers one yes...?

Not necessarily -- I'd say fire up the balloting thread as soon as JF finishes the GBV results if you'd like to, especially since Producers is probably going to generate a good bit of chat and campaigning before the first ballots come in, and may need some extra time specifically for that campaigning. I think it would be cool to have two sets of polls open at any given time, as long as there aren't two sets of results rolling out at the same time.

Antonio Carlos Broheem (WmC), Wednesday, 28 September 2011 21:41 (fourteen years ago)

this is kind of a separate-but-related question - how does one format embedded pics so they're all of a uniform size? cuz I will be needing to do a lot of GISing for the results, presumably.

(so pissed I can't find a copy of that photo of Phil Spector with a wad of bills in his mouth)

unorthodox economic revenge (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 28 September 2011 21:51 (fourteen years ago)

ahem

YESSSSS

GIS "Phil Spector eats money" returns some... unpleasant results

At tinypic.com you have the option to resize pictures. But that means you first have to download them, and then upload them to TinyPic. I don't think the forum software lets you resize pictures in the HTML code.

ArchCarrier, Thursday, 29 September 2011 08:04 (fourteen years ago)

How about restricting your GIS to 'exactly' a specific size?

Mark G, Thursday, 29 September 2011 08:22 (fourteen years ago)

Set up a new photobucket account/album, save all your pictures to there and then edit them? At least you know they're all going to show up properly then.

master musicians of jamiroquai (NickB), Thursday, 29 September 2011 08:25 (fourteen years ago)

Uhhhhhhhhhhhh, Can? This is ILM isn't it?

Juice Should Be Sterliized (Tom D.), Thursday, 29 September 2011 08:51 (fourteen years ago)

I mean, what's gone wrong here?

Juice Should Be Sterliized (Tom D.), Thursday, 29 September 2011 08:52 (fourteen years ago)

Everyone would send in the exact same ballot.

Mark G, Thursday, 29 September 2011 08:57 (fourteen years ago)

I really doubt that very much

Juice Should Be Sterliized (Tom D.), Thursday, 29 September 2011 08:58 (fourteen years ago)

Steely Dan?

gospodin simmel, Thursday, 29 September 2011 09:36 (fourteen years ago)

i think there'll almost HAVE to be a nominations thread just to hash out stuff like producers vs. engineers, artists who only produced themselves, people who are chiefly remixers, producers who've worked extensively as a team or individually, etc.

― dogps (some dude), Wednesday, August 10, 2011 9:30 PM (1 month ago) Bookmark

shakey i'd like to reiterate that you are in for so many headaches if you don't clarify this stuff really carefully and maybe let people debate certain inclusions or exclusions a little bit before voting even starts.

wes2gully (some dude), Thursday, 29 September 2011 11:11 (fourteen years ago)

Right, because I'm still not sure if we're voting for producers, or songs produced by certain producers, or all songs ever produced in the history of recorded music...
