lol yeah i was saying on the dfa thread that i think the fact that its a hot chip side project will stop ppl checking for it

just sayin, Friday, 9 September 2011 11:02 (fourteen years ago)

Is he over-earnest or insincere? Make your mind up.

"over-earnest" is a better word than insincere.

Crackle Box, "Gabriel" is in a different league from his album. one of my favourite tracks for a long time.

jed_, Friday, 9 September 2011 11:04 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, the album was not good. It was 90% instrumentals iirc? The vocal really makes Gabriel.

Number None, Friday, 9 September 2011 11:07 (fourteen years ago)

like, technically he's a very good singer

no he's not, lol

also...over-earnest and insincere mean opposite things, right?

i didn't take any notice of "gabriel" at first because it was a hot chip side project (and i don't even mind them) - v thankful their own vox are nowhere near it

xxposts Rather, his earnestness tips him into insincerity. I like one or two of their songs, but I agree with Crackle Box. His voice, and their overall sound, hint at what they're trying to do but fall short all too often. The emotions and attempts at zeitgeist-capturing pop have always sounded like they were knocked up in a brainstorming session called 'Things That Are Cool', ("Shutter shades", I like it, maybe a bit dated but we'll stick it up anyway. Okay, what else?)...

I was just mildly trolling because 'over-earnest' and 'insincere' are kind of the opposite of one another.

I think Alexis (or is it Joe?) has a reasonable falsetto (it sounds great on songs like Boy From School). He can certainly sing in tune, but his voice is kind of weedy and I can totally understand why that would be offputting. I'm put off by it sometimes as well.

I don't really see the point in comparing them to Chelonis at all, I don't think they're even aiming for the same thing.

Matt DC, Friday, 9 September 2011 11:10 (fourteen years ago)

Argh xpost.

Matt DC, Friday, 9 September 2011 11:11 (fourteen years ago)

i can see how over-earnest and insincere could produce a similar effect in a vocal even though they are different.

jed_, Friday, 9 September 2011 11:15 (fourteen years ago)

I don't think they're going for "Things That Are Cool" generally. I just think they're music geeks who try to stuff as many of the different sounds they like into their music as they can. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Goddard is a big UK Funky fan i believe, which you can hear in "Gabriel"

Number None, Friday, 9 September 2011 11:15 (fourteen years ago)

Boys From School is good - and yeah it's an example of his voice working well with the track.

Yo wait a minute man, you better think about the world (dog latin), Friday, 9 September 2011 11:18 (fourteen years ago)

Something I don't really understand: About Group. What I've heard is nowhere near as interesting as it was made out to be in the interview I read.

Yo wait a minute man, you better think about the world (dog latin), Friday, 9 September 2011 11:19 (fourteen years ago)

no they're not aiming for the same thing, that wasn't the point, it's just an attitude thing, i'm not really into that dilettante approach to stuff

and yeh, i just listened to gabriel and yeah it's really good, that "girl you've gone to far" bit is stuck in my head already. hope he gets a hit out of it. i didn't want to like it, but it's all that vocalist rlly. again, look forward to the remixes

Crackle Box, Friday, 9 September 2011 11:26 (fourteen years ago)

I can see why the dilettante thing would be offputting as well - at the same time I get the feeling that being in Hot Chip is probably more fun than being in most bands.

Matt DC, Friday, 9 September 2011 11:29 (fourteen years ago)

I like the way that any given time there can be four or five "Hot Chip DJ Sets" happening simultaneously around the world. A couple of the lesser members have DJ'd more than once in my home town, which no one of note ever comes to. Gotta get that paper

Number None, Friday, 9 September 2011 11:35 (fourteen years ago)

maybe only three or four simultaneously, I think some of them only DJ with another one. Joe also DJs with both 2 Bears and Greco-Roman Soundsystem tho

About Group is literally just some jams to tape, easy to not find that interesting. I got the first band-name-less album, s'alright but they're no Necks

Alexis has the falsetto, Joe has a much deeper voice, which I really love when they use it as a counterpoint to Alexis (whether in normal register or fluting and cracking), but they seem to feature him less and less as the band goes on

challopian rubes (sic), Friday, 9 September 2011 12:06 (fourteen years ago)

heard them (one of them) dj once and they did that HORRIBLE franchise club dj thing of playing a million intros to tracks and never getting through a song before thinking of some other 'amazing' track to mix it with. Gave me a fucking headache. Not to say the selection of songs were bad but jesus it made me weary.

So The 2 Bears album then? It's pretty good

Number None, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 10:10 (fourteen years ago)

if the vocals on 'work' put me off, how will i feel abt the album

just sayin, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 10:41 (fourteen years ago)

yeah you're probably not gonna like it

Number None, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 10:46 (fourteen years ago)

i listened to a bit of it today and thought... "big beat is back"? 'work' is pretty good, if you can overcome the vocals. i think i prefer joe's solo stuff

ILM's most hate to love/love to hate group will have a new album in 2012

http://pitchfork.com/news/45596-hot-chip-get-in-our-heads-on-new-album/
Hot Chip are back with a new album, new tour, and a new label. On June 12 in the U.S. and June 11 in the UK, they'll release In Our Heads on Domino, a departure from longtime home DFA/Astralwerks. The follow-up to 2010's One Life Stand was produced by Hot Chip themselves with producer/engineer Mark Ralph.

The band will hit the road this summer, including a stop at the Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago.

In Our Heads:

01 Motion Sickness
02 How Do You Do
03 Don't Deny Your Heart
04 Look at Where We Are
05 These Chains
06 Night and Day
07 Flutes
08 Now There Is Nothing
09 Ends of the Earth
10 Let Me Be Him
11 Always Been Your Love

06: Al B. Sure! cover? One can dream.

andrew m., Thursday, 1 March 2012 17:10 (fourteen years ago)

Love "One Night Stand" so much. I hope they play more than the Fork Fest here, though given Hot Chip's past tours, I bet they hit Chicago five times in 2012.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 1 March 2012 17:25 (fourteen years ago)

One Life Stand is my favourite albums of theirs, really excited for the this.

Kitchen Person, Saturday, 3 March 2012 16:22 (fourteen years ago)

"Flutes" is kind of awesome. It has an honest-to-god propulsive beat!

"I know its hard to hear but I'm a Realest." (rennavate), Thursday, 15 March 2012 17:18 (fourteen years ago)

ILM's most hate to love/love to hate group

Really? Always thought they were largely controversial and mildly to well liked here.

My reaction to the new track is basically the same as all the others - great song, shame about the voice. But I usually get used to the voice after a while and find myself wondering why it bothered me.

Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Friday, 16 March 2012 11:15 (fourteen years ago)

i'm sure his voice didn't always use to be this bad - it was never great but for the past few years it's been unlistenable

lex pretend, Friday, 16 March 2012 11:26 (fourteen years ago)

It's weird, it's sort of quavery but he's never actually out of tune, so after a while I get used to it. There are two vocalists and I think the quavery one has been doing more of late. Wish he'd sing in the lower register more though, but this goes for basically all male singers ever with me, especially indie dudes.

Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Friday, 16 March 2012 11:40 (fourteen years ago)

It's definitely worse. I haven't been able to listen to anything since the first two albums because of that voice.

nate woolls, Friday, 16 March 2012 11:40 (fourteen years ago)

Huh. I find the singing in Hot Chip possibly its greatest attribute. No joke. Reminds me of ... Squeeze? I don't know, but I love how approachable they are.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 16 March 2012 11:51 (fourteen years ago)

I hated the vocals on One Life Stand at first and then grew to love pretty much the whole album, but when Gabriel came out last year it reminded me of how amazing Hot Chip could have been had they gone down the Basement Jaxx route and roped in a rotating cast of singers.

Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Friday, 16 March 2012 11:57 (fourteen years ago)

What an obnoxious video!

Walter Galt, Friday, 16 March 2012 11:59 (fourteen years ago)

Just heard Flutes from the upcoming release. Love it, dreamy and v. pretty. I have a weak spot for synth pop, though, so good -> grrreat.

First proper single is out there. It's very addictive.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 21:39 (fourteen years ago)

Every time there's a new Hot Chip single and I hear praise on it I get a bit excited and hopeful, then I listen to it and feel frustrated by the horrible vocals. This is no different.

boxedjoy, Friday, 20 April 2012 08:06 (fourteen years ago)

Like I know I shouldn't ever expect the vocals to not be insufferably twee by this point but there's so much muscle in this new effort, it all seems so mismatched with a frustrating amount of potential.

boxedjoy, Friday, 20 April 2012 08:08 (fourteen years ago)

I love this, especially the deadpan DJ bit. "I like Zapp not Zappa/So Stop your jibber-jabber." I don't mind Alexis's vocals as long as he's not doing ballads.

And I have been called "The Appetite" (DL), Friday, 20 April 2012 08:31 (fourteen years ago)

I think the new single is fierce!

LeRooLeRoo, Friday, 20 April 2012 21:46 (fourteen years ago)

he should definitely get Joe to sing those

dude's voice is actually the exact opposite of fierce

wow this is just... wow. i am so mad i decided to listen to that.

akadarbarijava (psychgawsple), Saturday, 21 April 2012 07:47 (fourteen years ago)

He reminds me of Tom Ellard from Severed Heads, but at least Ellard had the sense to filter/distort his vocals.

I've been a Hot Chip apologist for a long time, but it ends now.

Alexis voice sounds fine there btw

I keep warming to them a little more with each passing year. From a starting position of "Who are these jokers?" I am now at "I think Hot Chip are probably the best modern British band." Which is not something I expected to believe.
