what do you mean? i have some questions about what you're getting at.
what seems dj-oriented about these tracks? what makes tracks dj oriented (as opposed to merely seeming like it). what makes a good dj? a good producer of songs like this? how are they at odds?
― mr peabody (moonship journey to baja), Thursday, 8 September 2011 17:53 (twelve years ago) link
i guess what i mean is, there are producers, and there are DJs, and producers who make songs people like end up becoming DJs, and that while they may have DJ'd before producing now they are suddenly booking more & more (and bigger) gigs, and suddenly they find that certain kinds of songs work better at certain times in sets, and that all-slow-motion-all-the-time can actually be pretty monotonous, so they start 'finding themselves' as DJs and subsequently lose the particular magic/distinctiveness of their producer-ly days as they start diversifying. Something is gained, something lost
― D-40, Thursday, 8 September 2011 17:56 (twelve years ago) link
this is a generalization
i havent seen any new Revenge sets or anything
oh i see this is not specific to "slow motion house"
― mr peabody (moonship journey to baja), Thursday, 8 September 2011 18:10 (twelve years ago) link
well doesnt have to be but seems like it could be applicable in this case?
― D-40, Thursday, 8 September 2011 18:21 (twelve years ago) link
was just spitballin
yeah i think it is sort of a "condition" afflicting all of dance music ... the DJ / producer divide. although often that leads down a boring trail (functionalism vs auterism, etc).
i was more wondering if you thought there was a specific reason that line of thought was particularly applicable to this style, except for the fact that it seems like these guys are sorta flailing at the moment.

remember reading an early interview with Mark E as he was first (and fast) becoming a name, and he hit on at least one angle of what you're saying, D-40, and spoke about tempo. He was like yeah, I make this slow stuff because it's funky and fun but when I DJ it's a lot of uptempo house that I love with this slower stuff dappled here and there at the right moments.
It reminded me of Michael Mayer in '04 saying schaffel was never meant to be The Sound of a whole night or mix or whatever, but rather dropped in to enhance the atmosphere. 'Course looking back Kompakt didn't really practice what he preached, what with whole mixes of the stuff and whatnot
― andrew m., Thursday, 8 September 2011 20:44 (twelve years ago) link
moonship- do you actually want to know what those tracks sound like? or were you positing that the revenge were uptempo to begin with?
i think linkwood has fared the best with more uptempo sounds, eg "electricity" and ESPECIALLY "one" (or dirty love or w/e was the first track on that 'from the vaults' release)
― a lagoon par la mer (psychgawsple), Thursday, 8 September 2011 21:22 (twelve years ago) link
"get up on it" is pretty rad, very in line with the first releases on instruments of rapture. the vocal sample is relatively cheeky too i suppose, has nothing to do with big beat to my knowledge
― a lagoon par la mer (psychgawsple), Thursday, 8 September 2011 21:29 (twelve years ago) link
no, i actually want to know what that stuff sounds like ... when i first got into slo mo house i scoured the net for those five20east singles but it seems like they never really made it to mp3
they look like big beat albums to my eyes, but as i said, i've never heard them.

oh well i would theorize that, in particular, slow mo disco doesnt seem particularly fun back to back to back in a dj set ... lots of dance movements come out of ~dance scenes~ as opposed to this which feels more producer-led
― D-40, Thursday, 8 September 2011 21:51 (twelve years ago) link
part of this is that i dont think ive ever been to a party or club where more than 1-2 tracks 'like this' were played where ppl were actually dancing

but maybe im outside the loop on that one

i think 2011 has especially been a bummer year for this stuff because all these guys are now releasing full length albums, and this is a sound (as deej noted) that really gets stale when played back to back for considerable amounts of time. at least we got a few good cuts on the mark e and 6th borough lps, and everything tiger & woods has put out this year just keeps sounding better the more times i hear it

no ones gonna step into a club they got booked to play and drop a whole set of this stuff, especially past midnight, and especially if they're the out-of-town headliner.
no dj is an island, etc.
i cant remember what track it was, but i was playing something straight off of this thread at this lounge bar i had a regular gig at. i'd always stay in this style from about 9:00 or 10:00 PM until about 11:30, slowly working my way from below 100 bpm up to around 116 over the course of an hour or two. about a half hour in to my set, (and a good 6 minutes in to the track i was playing), the bar was just starting to fill up, and this past-middle-aged sex-in-the-city looking lady got up from her s eataround the corner, walked up to my booth, gave me an exasperated look and just exclaimed "switch it up please!! its getting monotonous!!!"
i can't remember but i think i might have been playing this:

I've seen the Revenge play post-midnight sets of all his own stuff when he's the out-of-hemisphere headiner
― challopian rubes (sic), Friday, 9 September 2011 12:27 (twelve years ago) link
once he did a front-room and a back-room set, and all but about five people ditched the main room for the slower-mo Revenge second set
(first set might not have been his own shit, I don't remember)

I could still dance to "Rnb Drunkie" for hours if I had the chance to.
― ha ha ha ha jack my swag (boxedjoy), Friday, 9 September 2011 20:16 (twelve years ago) link
would totally dance post midnight to this stuff. For hours. If the 'chill' thing managed to find a club audience then I don't really see why this can't. I guess we're living in a post Ibiza morning after continue clubbing world though. Wonder how this stuff is going down in Europe actually.

Really into that Eddie C album. Space Shuttle is incredible. It sounds really familiar too, is it a sample of Ash Ra or Gottsching?
love the lush-sounding samples from this disc.

Just got the Eddie C album too. 9 (of 12) tracks in and already hands-down solid! I'd been playing the hell out of certain individual tracks (do it yourself!!!!!!), but I'm really very please so far at how this works as an album. Tip!
