the suites had the best songwriting -- 'yamaha' -> 'nikki pt 2' - > 'abyss', 'fancy' - > 'right side of my brain' - > 'mr. yeah'

what's the suite on love king? yamaha-nikki 2-abyss? that one is awesome. if the suite is sex intelligent, i sort of agree that it's boring.

i have no use for love vs. money-love vs. money part 2.

I think some of the lvm/lvm pt. 2 plays were a result of listening along while reading posts on here about them

both suites are central to enjoyment of either album imo

it's an art, being mean to your ex in a song. i love abyss and florida university, but the love vs. moneys are so boring. i think it's because abyss + f.u. glory in how juvenile they are, but the lvms are so self-important and thinking they're deep or something?

i know this is the opposite of how most dream fans on ilx feel, but love vs. money--->fancy is all just dumb to me. sometimes i think it's because i'm a girl lol.

yeah the LvMs are possibly my least favorite the-dream tracks, outside of 'panties to the side' and 'let me see that booty' and that ilk

personally i like the LVMs because i think they stand out sonically on an album that has such rich & idiosyncratic production everywhere else

i guess abyss isn't juvenile, but it's just straight-up mean instead of entering into tiresome justifications for meanness. also it sounds amazing.

i feel like my love for dream's disgusting persona is this very delicate balance and 1977 just seems like he ripped off the sleazeball mask to reveal a really sincere sleazeball and it's like ugh put your clothes back on.

what do the LvMs bring sonically though - hey, terius knows how to trigger a gunshot sound?

i basically disagree with everything in this post, starting with what the suites even comprised - suites were pt1/pt2/fancy/right side on LVM (and i do love the latter two; tellingly they're a lot different than the former two in terms of structure, atmosphere, etc) and i guess yamaha/nikki pt2/abyss on the last one and obviously 'yamaha' doesn't need the other two to exist at all. i disagree that "nikki pt 2" is among his best songwriting jobs - weak, repetitive non-hook...and like i said imo "abyss" is just ugly to listen to but i think pretty obviously has some of his absolute worst lyrics

on the off chance nobody has made the "wake me when it's over" zing on 1977 yet, well, wake me when its over

abyss has an amazing hook -- you guys are crazy

lol well pretend forgetfulness, etc, but i remember you saying the same thing and i said "only if you're a music critic" - the other songs bang harder end of story

only thing i disagree w/ re: horseshoe is that the production/songwriting on 'fancy' is so amazing that i'm willing to build up a 'hes playing a character' fantasy abt it

idk i've always taken these almost like the-dream & tricky's take on industrial music

i mean it's sort of an obvious trick -- cold & punishing beats frame a song where a dude's life has become sad -- but i think it works

"fancy" is just o_O in every way

yah fancy is more swirling wide screen cinematic grandeur

the thing i basically love about his sound is the "everything is happening inside a bouncy castle" feel. sometimes the lyrics are so dumb they take me out of the song, and i'm afraid "fancy" is one of those.

haha well I almost never listen to the lyrics unless they jump out at me. I'm also an eng/lit major type fwiw.

i think that part of me is also forgiving about it because i am broke & fantasize pretty readily / can understand why ppl fantasize about how much money would change their lives when working a shitty job, and i guess at some level i wish a the-dream would swoop in & hook me up w/ private jet rides

i know, it's weird, i like a lot of songs about materialism, but i just don't vibe with the particular fantasy in fancy

the last 30 secs get so close to being an eruption but it never quite gets unhinged - it's like at the moment he's about to go for the nuclear option he realizes that it's better to go for a 'honey attracts flies' approach and gearshifts into the absolute melting lushness of 'right side of my brain'

first of all, you could argue that the payoff is the end of "right side of my brain", which means that it just takes really long to get to

BUT

i think the part in "fancy" before the rap where the instrumental is really swelling up and the-dream starts scatting (lol) and there's the screwed vocal ("all we do is, we spend this money") is a great & sorta subtle climax, then it all drops out for his rap so there's a tension release -- idk that part was always pretty epic to me

like my fav. part about the last 30 secs is the way those deep drums come in w/ like 10 seconds left while there are all these like 2-3 synth runs in the background - but his voice still remains measured, control, and the last line is "but even when I used to rock polos I was fancy..." and that's a capitulation, not a sign of victory

the swooping strings are the release imo, yeah, the part w/ the double-time rap
