Would I vote on the following:

The Byrds (probably my first choice) - probably
Parliament/Funkadelic/George Clinton - probably
Frank Sinatra - no
The Velvet Underground - yes
Fairport Convention - probably not, a Richard Thompson/Fairports poll perhaps.
The Yardbirds - no
The Style Council - probably not, but would vote in a Jam/Style Council/Weller poll

What I'd like to see someone do, and if no one else does it I may swap with my Saint Etienne poll, is a poll of favourite vocalists. Primarily because I've no idea how to call it.

The multi-talented F.R. David (Billy Dods), Friday, 2 September 2011 21:17 (fourteen years ago)

how about a Radiohead poll? I'm sure they have a discography that's large enough (about 100 tracks, not including solo recordings) and they're popular on ILM. but I guess such poll would gather more trolling than others, I don't know?

V79, Friday, 2 September 2011 21:22 (fourteen years ago)

a paul weller career poll would be interesting

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Friday, 2 September 2011 21:23 (fourteen years ago)

A quick search found 93 officially released Jeff Buckley songs (including covers). Bigger official discography than Led Zeppelin! But which track would take the #1 spot?

I considered a Fairport-and-related poll too, but if I include solo Richard Thompson, it would seem right to also include solo Sandy Denny and probably Iain Matthews, alot of stuff that probably few of us have heard all of. Richard Thompson probably warrants his own poll (solo and with Linda that is), or perhaps only including the Fairport tracks that he wrote or sung on.

Yeah a Paul Weller all-inclusive poll would be fun, albeit one that wouldn't draw many US voters.

Lee547 (Lee626), Friday, 2 September 2011 21:28 (fourteen years ago)

various xps:

  • P-Funk is a blindspot for me, I mean. Beach Boys were the same - I tried on that poll, honest, but they're just never going to happen for me I'm afraid. The Clash used to be like that too (would be another good 'un btw)
  • Van Morrison, yup. Didn't think he had the fanbase here though.
  • big discographies not necessary I don't think. In fact in some ways a short one might be better. Don't overdo the rundown though!
  • Radiohead don't really need the rediscovery imo, not yet

Ismael Klata, Friday, 2 September 2011 21:31 (fourteen years ago)

  • Vocalists, great idea! I suggested a 'frontmen' (or suitably gender-neutral term) one a while back, to some scorn.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 2 September 2011 21:34 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah that's how I feel too. I wasn't kidding about curating a Jeff Buckley poll.... you can vote for anything but just top 20 rolled out.

If we have a producers poll, certainly we can have vocalists! Next up: drummers

Lee547 (Lee626), Friday, 2 September 2011 21:36 (fourteen years ago)

tempted to sign up to run a Radiohead poll just for a big hyped run-up to another In Rainbows joke thread

some dude, Friday, 2 September 2011 21:37 (fourteen years ago)

Where are all these Jeff Buckley songs released? I've accumulated a ton of his stuff at various times, but I'd assumed it was all bootl3g.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 2 September 2011 21:38 (fourteen years ago)

P-Funk is a big blind spot for me too, but one where I would try to do some listening/self-educating and turn in a ballot.

If we have a producers poll, certainly we can have vocalists! Next up: drummers

lol, remember those dumb bracketed deathmatch polls I did?

Halal Spaceboy (WmC), Friday, 2 September 2011 21:43 (fourteen years ago)

About five live CDs, the extended 20-song Sin-e deluxe edition, Grace of course (including "Forget Her" that was axed at the last minute) and Sketches, a few guest appearances on others' albums i.e. the Jazz Passengers and John Zorn, the Songs to No One collaboration w/Gary Lucas

Lee547 (Lee626), Friday, 2 September 2011 21:47 (fourteen years ago)

extended 20-song Sin-e deluxe edition

Good lord! Wasn't this originally a four-track EP?!

Ismael Klata, Friday, 2 September 2011 21:50 (fourteen years ago)

yes! And I erred about it being 20 songs - it's actually 37, including three with video clips!

Lee547 (Lee626), Friday, 2 September 2011 22:00 (fourteen years ago)

Haha wow - can't wait to see the 20th anniversary collectors' edition.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 2 September 2011 22:00 (fourteen years ago)

Sonic Youth is still on the table btw, and I have ZERO idea how that would pan out actually.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 2 September 2011 22:17 (fourteen years ago)

well the jazz poll is over, thanks for waiting some dude. Hope you have a successful poll!

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Friday, 2 September 2011 22:17 (fourteen years ago)

I'll change my one from Chemical Brothers to Radiohead

Prejudice Capsule Hamster (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Saturday, 3 September 2011 08:55 (fourteen years ago)

no prob, ASR, happy to time so that nobody's toes are stepped on!

i definitely want to run a Sonic Youth poll at some point, i just don't want to be greedy and have 2 on the queue at once and it felt more exciting to get the Timbaland poll going as kind of a change of pace from what's been done so far.

excited about Radiohead, even months away

Halal Spaceboy (WmC), Saturday, 10 September 2011 17:50 (fourteen years ago)

dammit, I thought my mentioning of RH poll would be taken into account wanting to do it myself :x

V79, Saturday, 10 September 2011 18:24 (fourteen years ago)

okay I'm up for a second round half a year from now

- velvet underground solo careers

iatee, Saturday, 10 September 2011 18:26 (fourteen years ago)

V79 - you can take it over if you want

Prejudice Capsule Hamster (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Saturday, 10 September 2011 18:33 (fourteen years ago)

Sorry! I took both of those posts as interest in a Radiohead poll but not a commitment to conducting it. Maybe NB&S will work something out with you.

xpost

iatee, do you mean VU plus VU solo careers, or just solo stuff by VU members?

dang, another xpost

Halal Spaceboy (WmC), Saturday, 10 September 2011 18:34 (fourteen years ago)

just solo stuff

iatee, Saturday, 10 September 2011 18:37 (fourteen years ago)

xpost: that's splendid, NB&S! thank youuu. so please sign me up for that poll!

V79, Saturday, 10 September 2011 18:41 (fourteen years ago)

NB&S, do you want to keep spot #26 and go back to Chemical Bros.?

Halal Spaceboy (WmC), Saturday, 10 September 2011 18:43 (fourteen years ago)

No, give my spot to V79. I wasn't feeling much enthusiasm for the Chemical Brothers idea.

Prejudice Capsule Hamster (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Saturday, 10 September 2011 18:45 (fourteen years ago)

god. is NO ONE going to do this madonna poll then? sign me up for it, it's fucking ages away after all.

second only to popcorn (or something), Saturday, 10 September 2011 19:21 (fourteen years ago)

(the list in progress)

Commitment! That's all it takes.

Halal Spaceboy (WmC), Saturday, 10 September 2011 19:27 (fourteen years ago)

ooh that was quick. if i get 10 messages within the next week approving a carl craig thread then i may change my mind. that's not gonna happen though is it?

second only to popcorn (or something), Saturday, 10 September 2011 19:30 (fourteen years ago)

thread = poll obv. btw. need to free up the week beginning 5/3/12...

second only to popcorn (or something), Saturday, 10 September 2011 19:36 (fourteen years ago)

What is 'Carl Craig'?

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 10 September 2011 19:39 (fourteen years ago)

just two random christian names i thought of.

second only to popcorn (or something), Saturday, 10 September 2011 20:01 (fourteen years ago)

Is there gonna be side projects and solo stuff in the GBV poll?

that's cute, but it's WRONG (CaptainLorax), Saturday, 10 September 2011 23:02 (fourteen years ago)

johnny fever says it will be coffeeshop friendly

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Saturday, 10 September 2011 23:04 (fourteen years ago)

I'll do a "The Fall" poll/ballot.

That should be interesting..

Mark G, Saturday, 10 September 2011 23:06 (fourteen years ago)

yay!

http://drdrestartedburningman.tumblr.com/ (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 11 September 2011 06:25 (fourteen years ago)

You say yay, I say "What, this will take until 2013 at this rate!"

Mark G, Sunday, 11 September 2011 22:20 (fourteen years ago)

7. Timbaland - some dude (if you were gonna do it, you woulda done it - results start tomorrow)

haha to be clear, i am being lenient on late ballots and am holding out for at least one more, and will more likely start on tuesday

some dude, Sunday, 11 September 2011 23:08 (fourteen years ago)

ah ok, correction noted -- I'm glad you're getting a good response!

Antonio Carlos Broheem (WmC), Sunday, 11 September 2011 23:11 (fourteen years ago)

yeah total's gonna be around 35 voters -- how does that rank w/ the other artist poll turnouts?

some dude, Sunday, 11 September 2011 23:16 (fourteen years ago)

Zep's final count was 66, Pavement was around 58, but I think U2 and Beach Boys were 40ish? My impression is that it takes more dedicated listening to stay current and educated with hip-hop than it does with older canonical artists whose discogs are kinda imprinted in everybody's head to start with (note: I'm probably talking shit here), so 35 seems like a really good turnout to me.

Antonio Carlos Broheem (WmC), Sunday, 11 September 2011 23:23 (fourteen years ago)

Jazz poll got 39, which is at least double what I expected

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Sunday, 11 September 2011 23:28 (fourteen years ago)

oh yeah i never even hoped to compete w/ those big rock gods but the Timbaland turnout REALLY exceeded my expectations, especially since that poll of the whole genre of hip hop only got like 30 ballots iirc

some dude, Sunday, 11 September 2011 23:32 (fourteen years ago)

as much as i love pavement,it seems funny calling them rock gods :)

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Sunday, 11 September 2011 23:35 (fourteen years ago)

oh i missed them in that post otherwise i would've said 'gods' in scarequotes

some dude, Sunday, 11 September 2011 23:36 (fourteen years ago)

I wonder how many different people have voted in all these. I know there's been some overlap...

Antonio Carlos Broheem (WmC), Sunday, 11 September 2011 23:38 (fourteen years ago)
