My 11 year old son listens to it raw, his current faves are Chief Keef, Schoolboy Q and Gravediggaz. He is mostly non-verbal so it doesn't impact on his speech, if he does start m-fucking all over the place I will probably come back to this thread.

MarkoP, Sunday, 2 June 2013 16:22 (thirteen years ago)

here's one that surprised me recently

DJ Quik (feat Ice Cube) - "Boogie Til You Conk Out"

Bathory Tub Blues (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 6 June 2013 15:54 (thirteen years ago)

Awesome!

Poster The Sheeple (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Thursday, 6 June 2013 16:49 (thirteen years ago)

Ultramagnetic MCs "Feelin It"

Bathory Tub Blues (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 6 June 2013 17:11 (thirteen years ago)

You already said that one :)

Poster The Sheeple (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Thursday, 6 June 2013 17:12 (thirteen years ago)

I assume based on the "explicit" warnings on some of the choices that cursing doesn't matter?

they are either militarists (ugh) or kangaroos (?) (DJP), Thursday, 6 June 2013 17:14 (thirteen years ago)

some are on albums that are labeled explicit but they song itself isn't

Poster The Sheeple (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Thursday, 6 June 2013 17:15 (thirteen years ago)

ach sorry yeah I don't have these organized by "date added"

which ones are you referring to DJP? I dunno what warrants an "explicit" tag, my guess is those just get slapped on entire albums, regardless of individual track content

Bathory Tub Blues (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 6 June 2013 17:16 (thirteen years ago)

ah gotcha

they are either militarists (ugh) or kangaroos (?) (DJP), Thursday, 6 June 2013 17:16 (thirteen years ago)

if you hear one on the list that has a swear then lemme know and I will remove it

Poster The Sheeple (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Thursday, 6 June 2013 17:16 (thirteen years ago)

How about subject matter, is that a concern? Because "Sometimes I Rhyme Slow" is a fantastic song with no cursing but the second verse especially may be a little on the sophisticated side for a kid?

they are either militarists (ugh) or kangaroos (?) (DJP), Thursday, 6 June 2013 17:19 (thirteen years ago)

hm, kinda letting that slide, doubt my 4 year old could parse that one out

Poster The Sheeple (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Thursday, 6 June 2013 17:24 (thirteen years ago)

I figure if the kid can decipher enough of the slang to put together what it's about then the kid is old enough to have a conversation with their parents about the content. but obviously that's an individual decision up to each parent.

anyway yeah I'm not screening for content per se, I just don't want my kids to start dropping n-bombs or f-bombs everywhere cuz they heard them in a song. if they hear a song about drug dealing or something else scary or sad then I'll discuss it frankly with them (in terms they can understand), but that's just how I approach it.

Bathory Tub Blues (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 6 June 2013 17:26 (thirteen years ago)

yeah I'm in the same boat, more or less

Poster The Sheeple (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Thursday, 6 June 2013 17:28 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, my son's getting into rap right now. but at the moment, he's into macklemore and stuff. I haven't had a conversation with him about "What up? I got a big cock!" or why R. Kelly's sheets smell like piss yet.

how's life, Thursday, 6 June 2013 17:29 (thirteen years ago)

kids growing up on Macklemore is a sad thing

Poster The Sheeple (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Thursday, 6 June 2013 17:30 (thirteen years ago)

I know man. I know.

how's life, Thursday, 6 June 2013 17:30 (thirteen years ago)

you know what is surprisingly curse-free is almost the entirety of Kool Keith's "Lost in Space" album, big hit with my daughter.

Bathory Tub Blues (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 6 June 2013 17:31 (thirteen years ago)

plus it's funny and is about robots and lasers and shit

Bathory Tub Blues (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 6 June 2013 17:32 (thirteen years ago)

Poster The Sheeple (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Thursday, 6 June 2013 17:38 (thirteen years ago)

Poster The Sheeple (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Thursday, 6 June 2013 17:39 (thirteen years ago)

"Master of the Game" has a ref to "titties" in it and I think there's maybe one or two other swears but I forget where

Bathory Tub Blues (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 6 June 2013 18:03 (thirteen years ago)

this may be the only time where me posting "WHERE THE TITTIES AT?" would be entirely innocuous
