Also is it just me or is Terius's production sounding cheaper and cheaper these days?

that studio video posted upthread was really interesting. on one hand it's really impressive that he's writing songs on the spot and making really quick decisions, and knocking out tracks in an hour per. on the other hand that doesn't leave much room for detail work/spending time on sounds/etc

hardcore oatmeal (Jordan), Friday, 2 September 2011 15:37 (fourteen years ago)

a pretty modern methodology
not sure terius will be the finest practitioner, tho

D-40, Friday, 2 September 2011 15:41 (fourteen years ago)

i feel like there was something to his strength being the tension between tossed-off melodic instinct & labored-over, well-crafted track construction. now he's lost that balance

D-40, Friday, 2 September 2011 15:42 (fourteen years ago)

you feel he's lost it based on a free album?

lex pretend, Friday, 2 September 2011 16:30 (fourteen years ago)

not sure what the price has to do w/ it

D-40, Friday, 2 September 2011 16:31 (fourteen years ago)

nor did i imply that hes permanently lost it or w/e

D-40, Friday, 2 September 2011 16:31 (fourteen years ago)

although i wd say i am not hopeful

D-40, Friday, 2 September 2011 16:32 (fourteen years ago)

A lot probably hinges on how much Tricky and LOS involvement there is with Love IV

Number None, Friday, 2 September 2011 16:34 (fourteen years ago)

it's not a correlation that always holds up but i tend to have lower expectations for something an artist gives away free than a "proper" release - in the case of terius it seems it would obviously be kinda tossed off in comparison to normal

lex pretend, Friday, 2 September 2011 16:37 (fourteen years ago)

i find these days i don't have the time or energy to bother with "expectations" or predicting how good an album's gonna be anyway. it might be genius, it might not be, til it gets here it's all speculation.

lex pretend, Friday, 2 September 2011 16:38 (fourteen years ago)

yeah but its been a slippery slope on his albums too

D-40, Friday, 2 September 2011 16:38 (fourteen years ago)

we've been over this before but you know i disagree

except you think his last album is better than its predecessor

J0rdan S., Friday, 2 September 2011 17:25 (fourteen years ago)

they're comparable. i like more songs on the 3rd, on balance. the 1st is still head & shoulders

D-40, Friday, 2 September 2011 17:32 (fourteen years ago)

oh man ok feeling this hook! ghetto! ghetto! it's reminding me of something totally obvious (a -dream song)

-k3vin k

"ghetto" kinda reminded me of mariah's "ribbon"?

― J0rdan S., Thursday, September 1, 2011 12:09 AM (Yesterday)

it's "gangsta luv"!!

frogsb (k3vin k.), Friday, 2 September 2011 21:23 (fourteen years ago)

whenever i listen to "long gone", i always picture kyle from "party down" singing "stop fucking with me... ROMAN"

J0rdan S., Friday, 2 September 2011 21:27 (fourteen years ago)

ROCK OUT!

maybe my ears are tricking me, but the sound in those 'making-of' vids seemed different to me. like, he whips up a demo with cheap sounds as a songwriting tool, and then the producers re-do it, add detail and depth, etc.

i think that's what his own productions are missing, some of the sparkle. they're kind of flat and unmixed somehow, there's not much dimension.

i wish the verses to wedding crasher were better cuz the chorus has srsly been stuck in my head all wkend

never seen a nikka buy a house from the toilet

johnny crunch, Sunday, 4 September 2011 14:38 (fourteen years ago)

singing "stop fucking with me... ROMAN"

lolz this is in 'used to be' btw

johnny crunch, Sunday, 4 September 2011 14:45 (fourteen years ago)

this new album is an hour of everything I hate about the love/money and love king suites

blegh

dayo, Sunday, 4 September 2011 17:20 (fourteen years ago)

^^

frogsb (k3vin k.), Sunday, 4 September 2011 19:23 (fourteen years ago)

what do you hate about the love/money & love king suites

J0rdan S., Sunday, 4 September 2011 19:28 (fourteen years ago)

esp you, kevin?

J0rdan S., Sunday, 4 September 2011 19:28 (fourteen years ago)

the interminable meandering vocals, the underwritten choruses, the ponderous and directionless instrumentation that weakly suggests 'bombast' but nothing else

dayo, Sunday, 4 September 2011 19:30 (fourteen years ago)

the way it sounds like it's one bong hit away from being a spoken word joint about how you hate your ex

dayo, Sunday, 4 September 2011 19:30 (fourteen years ago)

dayo otm

hmmm, i don't pick up any of this in the suites

J0rdan S., Sunday, 4 September 2011 19:33 (fourteen years ago)

i think i've been probably the most outspoken member of this board in the past few years saying that the "suites" (title tracks on LVM, abyss/february love/whatever on the last one) are his weakest material! they tend to trade corny atmospherics for actual songs imo

xp

frogsb (k3vin k.), Sunday, 4 September 2011 19:35 (fourteen years ago)

frogsb (k3vin k.), Sunday, 4 September 2011 19:35 (fourteen years ago)

haha I want to post a screencap of my itunes playcount for love/money

i disagree w/ this characterization of the suites

D-40, Sunday, 4 September 2011 19:36 (fourteen years ago)

partic 'abyss' ... wtf

D-40, Sunday, 4 September 2011 19:36 (fourteen years ago)

I've always hated the suites but I dunno how vocal I've been on these threads about that. I distinctly remember j0rd defending the suites as being among the best songs on l/m and love king tho... lex too I think

dayo, Sunday, 4 September 2011 19:36 (fourteen years ago)

yeah you love abyss, i know, i think it sucks, we've been over this xp

you just otm'ed dayo and i agree 100% w/ him so idk what side you're on here

frogsb (k3vin k.), Sunday, 4 September 2011 19:37 (fourteen years ago)

i should take back my dayo otm -- i do think that this album is the worst parts of the-dream's schtick, but i don't think its the suites themselves that were the problem or have poor songwriting on the other 2 albums

D-40, Sunday, 4 September 2011 19:37 (fourteen years ago)

fuck I almost had my first deej otm

dayo, Sunday, 4 September 2011 19:38 (fourteen years ago)

*writes long meandering song full of corny atmospherics in protest*

dayo, Sunday, 4 September 2011 19:39 (fourteen years ago)

the suites had the best songwriting -- 'yamaha' -> 'nikki pt 2' - > 'abyss', 'fancy' - > 'right side of my brain' - > 'mr. yeah'

D-40, Sunday, 4 September 2011 19:39 (fourteen years ago)

what's the suite on love king? yamaha-nikki 2-abyss? that one is awesome. if the suite is sex intelligent, i sort of agree that it's boring.

i have no use for love vs. money-love vs. money part 2.

horseshoe, Sunday, 4 September 2011 19:39 (fourteen years ago)

dayo otm about his characterization of this album though imo

D-40, Sunday, 4 September 2011 19:40 (fourteen years ago)

sex intelligent -> sex intelligent remix, nikki pt 2 -> abyss

dayo, Sunday, 4 September 2011 19:40 (fourteen years ago)

woohoo *writes FILA pt. 2* xp

dayo, Sunday, 4 September 2011 19:40 (fourteen years ago)

abyss is so great i don't understand how anyone could not love it

horseshoe, Sunday, 4 September 2011 19:41 (fourteen years ago)

the abyss has a nice outro but the part leading up to it is a huge slog

dayo, Sunday, 4 September 2011 19:44 (fourteen years ago)

lol

I think some of the lvm/lvm pt. 2 plays were a result of listening along while reading posts on here about them

dayo, Sunday, 4 September 2011 19:44 (fourteen years ago)

imo the suites are

love vs money -> love vs money 2 -> fancy -> right side of my brain

yamaha -> nikki pt 2 -> abyss

i... can't remember reading many people speaking out against these songs but maybe i've forgotten idk

J0rdan S., Sunday, 4 September 2011 19:46 (fourteen years ago)

both suites are central to enjoyment of either album imo
