Also is it just me or is Terius's production sounding cheaper and cheaper these days?

that studio video posted upthread was really interesting. on one hand it's really impressive that he's writing songs on the spot and making really quick decisions, and knocking out tracks in an hour per. on the other hand that doesn't leave much room for detail work/spending time on sounds/etc

not sure terius will be the finest practitioner, tho

i feel like there was something to his strength being the tension between tossed-off melodic instinct & labored-over, well-crafted track construction. now he's lost that balance

A lot probably hinges on how much Tricky and LOS involvement there is with Love IV

it's not a correlation that always holds up but i tend to have lower expectations for something an artist gives away free than a "proper" release - in the case of terius it seems it would obviously be kinda tossed off in comparison to normal

i find these days i don't have the time or energy to bother with "expectations" or predicting how good an album's gonna be anyway. it might be genius, it might not be, til it gets here it's all speculation.

except you think his last album is better than its predecessor

they're comparable. i like more songs on the 3rd, on balance. the 1st is still head & shoulders

maybe my ears are tricking me, but the sound in those 'making-of' vids seemed different to me. like, he whips up a demo with cheap sounds as a songwriting tool, and then the producers re-do it, add detail and depth, etc.

i think that's what his own productions are missing, some of the sparkle. they're kind of flat and unmixed somehow, there's not much dimension.

i wish the verses to wedding crasher were better cuz the chorus has srsly been stuck in my head all wkend

hmmm, i don't pick up any of this in the suites

i think i've been probably the most outspoken member of this board in the past few years saying that the "suites" (title tracks on LVM, abyss/february love/whatever on the last one) are his weakest material! they tend to trade corny atmospherics for actual songs imo

I've always hated the suites but I dunno how vocal I've been on these threads about that. I distinctly remember j0rd defending the suites as being among the best songs on l/m and love king tho... lex too I think

i should take back my dayo otm -- i do think that this album is the worst parts of the-dream's schtick, but i don't think its the suites themselves that were the problem or have poor songwriting on the other 2 albums

I think some of the lvm/lvm pt. 2 plays were a result of listening along while reading posts on here about them

imo the suites are

love vs money -> love vs money 2 -> fancy -> right side of my brain

yamaha -> nikki pt 2 -> abyss

i... can't remember reading many people speaking out against these songs but maybe i've forgotten idk

both suites are central to enjoyment of either album imo
