btw i'm totally fine having ballots e-mailed to me and tabulating them by hand, but if anyone has any fancy spreadsheet things or a voting site they want to offer for use for the Timbaland poll that would be cool, too.

Finefinemusic posted a link upthread to a handy spreadsheet she made for these polls -- Thread for coordinating the order and timing of ILM ballot polls

I don't know .xls's from elbows and it took me a while to figure out, but it was useful for Zep. Then I transferred all the numbers to a Google Docs spreadsheet so everybody could study them after the poll was done.

Halal Spaceboy (WmC), Tuesday, 30 August 2011 13:08 (fourteen years ago)

cool! thanks finefinemusic and wmc, this might be really useful

✇ ruehl (some dude), Tuesday, 30 August 2011 13:33 (fourteen years ago)

Glad to help! Sorry, I'm such an Excel geek it's hard for me to make things easy for beginners - I did my best! I am here if you have questions; the thread is bookmarked so I should see it.

it's been a long time, I shouldn't have left you without a dope poll to vote to:

TIMBALAND TRACKS POLL (voting deadling Saturday, September 10th midnight EST)

✇ ruehl (some dude), Tuesday, 30 August 2011 19:54 (fourteen years ago)

looking forward to the Madonna poll!

.. er i haven't missed this have i??

piscesx, Thursday, 1 September 2011 02:31 (fourteen years ago)

You didn't miss it -- the poster who initially signed up for it withdrew. Feel free to volunteer!

(the list in progress)

I'm having second thoughts about Crimson.

Halal Spaceboy (WmC), Thursday, 1 September 2011 02:40 (fourteen years ago)

glad i haven't missed it. i'm still too narked by the outcome of the only ilx poll i ever made (Girls Aloud's best album) to even consider another!

piscesx, Thursday, 1 September 2011 02:50 (fourteen years ago)

(the list in progress)

Dropping Crimson, adding Miles

Halal Spaceboy (WmC), Friday, 2 September 2011 15:03 (fourteen years ago)

hah, good luck with that one

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Friday, 2 September 2011 15:05 (fourteen years ago)

you should have done a spiritual hat jazz poll

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Friday, 2 September 2011 15:06 (fourteen years ago)

I'm adding years to my life expectancy by ignoring that crap and sticking with the results.

Halal Spaceboy (WmC), Friday, 2 September 2011 15:07 (fourteen years ago)

it's not an ilm poll without a clusterfuck on spiritual hats

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Friday, 2 September 2011 15:11 (fourteen years ago)

o rly

Halal Spaceboy (WmC), Friday, 2 September 2011 15:15 (fourteen years ago)

How popular does an artist or band have to be to warrant a ballot poll? I mean, I'd so be up for a Tim Hardin poll, but I don't think there's a large enough fan base to get alot of ballots (which is tragic, incidentally). So I'm thinking who's left that I'd consider:

The Byrds (probably my first choice)
Parliament/Funkadelic/George Clinton
Frank Sinatra
The Velvet Underground
Fairport Convention
The Yardbirds
The Style Council

Which of those is everyone here most into for a ballot poll?

Lee547 (Lee626), Friday, 2 September 2011 20:40 (fourteen years ago)

I'd love to see Sinatra, then Funkadelic, because they're two blindfolds that I think'd be worth investigating. But I wouldn't have much to contribute I guess.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 2 September 2011 20:45 (fourteen years ago)

blindfolds = blindspots, ffs, autocorrect going to town these days

Ismael Klata, Friday, 2 September 2011 20:46 (fourteen years ago)

Needs a combo of a. big enough discography and b. big enough ILX fan contingent, imo. I think Led Zeppelin (86 songs roughly) was close to the smallest discog that would be workable -- the poll was super successful because there were so many voters.

I think P-Funk would be very successful. VU has the voters but maybe not the discog. Sinatra has the discog but probably not the voters. Byrds would do ok, Fairport and Yardbirds seem iffy, Style Council would work if you expanded it to Jam/SC/Weller.

Halal Spaceboy (WmC), Friday, 2 September 2011 20:48 (fourteen years ago)

Why is P-Funk a blindspot?

Lee547 (Lee626), Friday, 2 September 2011 20:50 (fourteen years ago)

Can I request to have my poll moved down a bit on the list? I see that it's coming up and right now I don't feel like I have the time to dedicate the appropriate energy to it.

Mordy, Friday, 2 September 2011 20:53 (fourteen years ago)

vu would be a good one. i imagine a lot of great discussion in that one

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Friday, 2 September 2011 20:53 (fourteen years ago)

obv id do a pfunk one if seandalai does the tallying up

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Friday, 2 September 2011 20:54 (fourteen years ago)

How far down you want to drop, Mordy?

Halal Spaceboy (WmC), Friday, 2 September 2011 20:55 (fourteen years ago)

25?

Mordy, Friday, 2 September 2011 20:58 (fourteen years ago)

clemenza loses his prime number OH NOES

Halal Spaceboy (WmC), Friday, 2 September 2011 21:01 (fourteen years ago)

I'd love to do Fairport but it could get complicated (and huge if I included side projects and solo albums).

Sinatra probably has lots of fans amongst ILXers but few that have heard anything approaching the entire discography (which is huge - we're talking half the 20th century here). Myself I'm very sketchy on the early Harry James/Tommy Dorsey era or anything after 1973.

I guess I'll leave P-Funk and VU to others since I'm sure there's plenty willing to take those on.

BTW does the Jacksons poll include MJ and others solo or just J5/Jacksons?

Lee547 (Lee626), Friday, 2 September 2011 21:03 (fourteen years ago)

I believe Jamie's plan is to include Michael, Janet, J5, everything with the Jackson name on it.

Halal Spaceboy (WmC), Friday, 2 September 2011 21:05 (fourteen years ago)

Cool! That means I can vote for LaToya!

Oh, one other I'd consider doing: Van Morrison. Definitely meets the big discography/big ILX fan contingent criteria, as well as overall significance

Lee547 (Lee626), Friday, 2 September 2011 21:08 (fourteen years ago)

There are some polls coming up that involve discographies smaller than Zep, so I may be proven wrong! I pull all my opinions hot and fresh from dark places best not pondered too deeply.

Halal Spaceboy (WmC), Friday, 2 September 2011 21:10 (fourteen years ago)

Would I vote on the following:

The Byrds (probably my first choice) - probably
Parliament/Funkadelic/George Clinton - probably
Frank Sinatra - no
The Velvet Underground - yes
Fairport Convention - probably not, a Richard Thompson/Fairports poll perhaps.
The Yardbirds - no
The Style Council - probably not, but would vote in a Jam/Style Council/Weller poll

What I'd like to see someone do, and if no one else does it I may swap with my Saint Etienne poll, is a poll of favourite vocalists. Primarily because I've no idea how to call it.

The multi-talented F.R. David (Billy Dods), Friday, 2 September 2011 21:17 (fourteen years ago)

how about a Radiohead poll? I'm sure they have a discography that's large enough (about 100 tracks, not including solo recordings) and they're popular on ILM. but I guess such poll would gather more trolling than others, I don't know?

V79, Friday, 2 September 2011 21:22 (fourteen years ago)

a paul weller career poll would be interesting

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Friday, 2 September 2011 21:23 (fourteen years ago)

A quick search found 93 officially released Jeff Buckley songs (including covers). Bigger official discography than Led Zeppelin! But which track would take the #1 spot?

I considered a Fairport-and-related poll too, but if I include solo Richard Thompson, it would seem right to also include solo Sandy Denny and probably Iain Matthews, alot of stuff that probably few of us have heard all of. Richard Thompson probably warrants his own poll (solo and with Linda that is), or perhaps only including the Fairport tracks that he wrote or sung on.

Yeah a Paul Weller all-inclusive poll would be fun, albeit one that wouldn't draw many US voters.

Lee547 (Lee626), Friday, 2 September 2011 21:28 (fourteen years ago)

various xps:

  • P-Funk is a blindspot for me, I mean. Beach Boys were the same - I tried on that poll, honest, but they're just never going to happen for me I'm afraid. The Clash used to be like that too (would be another good 'un btw)
  • Van Morrison, yup. Didn't think he had the fanbase here though.
  • big discographies not necessary I don't think. In fact in some ways a short one might be better. Don't overdo the rundown though!
  • Radiohead don't really need the rediscovery imo, not yet

Ismael Klata, Friday, 2 September 2011 21:31 (fourteen years ago)

  • Vocalists, great idea! I suggested a 'frontmen' (or suitably gender-neutral term) one a while back, to some scorn.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 2 September 2011 21:34 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah that's how I feel too. I wasn't kidding about curating a Jeff Buckley poll.... you can vote for anything but just top 20 rolled out.

If we have a producers poll, certainly we can have vocalists! Next up: drummers

Lee547 (Lee626), Friday, 2 September 2011 21:36 (fourteen years ago)

tempted to sign up to run a Radiohead poll just for a big hyped run-up to another In Rainbows joke thread

some dude, Friday, 2 September 2011 21:37 (fourteen years ago)

Where are all these Jeff Buckley songs released? I've accumulated a ton of his stuff at various times, but I'd assumed it was all bootl3g.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 2 September 2011 21:38 (fourteen years ago)

P-Funk is a big blind spot for me too, but one where I would try to do some listening/self-educating and turn in a ballot.

If we have a producers poll, certainly we can have vocalists! Next up: drummers

lol, remember those dumb bracketed deathmatch polls I did?

Halal Spaceboy (WmC), Friday, 2 September 2011 21:43 (fourteen years ago)

About five live CDs, the extended 20-song Sin-e deluxe edition, Grace of course (including "Forget Her" that was axed at the last minute) and Sketches, a few guest appearances on others' albums i.e. the Jazz Passengers and John Zorn, the Songs to No One collaboration w/Gary Lucas

Lee547 (Lee626), Friday, 2 September 2011 21:47 (fourteen years ago)

extended 20-song Sin-e deluxe edition

Good lord! Wasn't this originally a four-track EP?!

Ismael Klata, Friday, 2 September 2011 21:50 (fourteen years ago)

yes! And I erred about it being 20 songs - it's actually 37, including three with video clips!

Haha wow - can't wait to see the 20th anniversary collectors' edition.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 2 September 2011 22:00 (fourteen years ago)

Sonic Youth is still on the table btw, and I have ZERO idea how that would pan out actually.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 2 September 2011 22:17 (fourteen years ago)

well the jazz poll is over, thanks for waiting some dude. Hope you have a successful poll!

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Friday, 2 September 2011 22:17 (fourteen years ago)

I'll change my one from Chemical Brothers to Radiohead

Prejudice Capsule Hamster (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Saturday, 3 September 2011 08:55 (fourteen years ago)

no prob, ASR, happy to time so that nobody's toes are stepped on!

i definitely want to run a Sonic Youth poll at some point, i just don't want to be greedy and have 2 on the queue at once and it felt more exciting to get the Timbaland poll going as kind of a change of pace from what's been done so far.
