although once again your display name puts your post into an uncomfortable context
anyway, what dan is saying is interesting, but there's two things at work here. as it pertains to odd future being embraced by white, indie audiences, i think there is certainly a kernel of truth in the idea (dan is echoing cord jefferson here) that it is partly because that audience is attracted to black, male rage because it's a way to feel dangerous w/o actually being dangerous. BUT, as it pertains to odd future being embraced by the mainstream writ large -- the vmas, kanye west, etc -- it's because they break a lot of stereotypes as to what we expect to see and hear from our popular rappers
― J0rdan S., Monday, August 29, 2011 12:30 PM (3 hours ago) Bookmark
i don't think "rage" is OF's selling point at all, otherwise their audience would listen to a lot of other rappers for whom anger/rage (whether political or whatever) is a much more defining trait. i think a lot of their fanbase mainly sees them as harmless skinny college-age kids who wear ironic kitten t-shirts and have barely worked a job (legal or illegal) a day in their lives, i.e. not very different after all. the infantile "facebook is being such a faggot right now deleting my page" anger lends a frisson of edginess to what they do but it's not the main selling point the way it was for, like, KoRn and their fanbase in the '90s.
― ✇ ruehl (some dude), Monday, 29 August 2011 20:10 (fourteen years ago)
yeah rage isn't really accurate. it's the casual nihilism, the standard "I don't give a FUCK" stance

can I just say Gaga's drag persona, visually, is the least irritating presentation of herself I've ever seen her do
I mean she sort of ruined it with the monologue but it was nice seeing Nicki be the most ludicrously dressed person in the room
― now I have to imagine your penis (DJP), Monday, 29 August 2011 20:48 (fourteen years ago)
Nicki's outfit was lol - it's like all the stupid sci-fi fashion fantasies of Heavy Metal magazine have been made real. Ice cream cone necklace! Angular metal dress! Mismatched hair colors!
― satisfying punishment for that thing he said about lesbians (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 29 August 2011 20:50 (fourteen years ago)
i think katy actually topped nicki (or dug the ditch under her or w/e) last night.
i thought gaga staying in character the whole night was pretty funny. she so rarely really projects any really strong personality so even a cheesy sketch character is kind of a nice change of pace.

I've been meaning to write an essay on this for a while. I honestly think there is some new-millennial Norman Mailer shit going on where the white press is fawning over dude because he likes Toro Y Moi and skateboarding and slasher flicks and Vice magazine—stuff white ppl consider THEIR culture. Like when a cool black dude comes out and co-signs our obsessions, it VALIDATES the white hipster "culture" (lol) in a weird way, and ppl can't wait to tell everyone.
haha this is totally not how i read the odd future dynamic in fact i kinda think you have it backwards
― game of pwns (Lamp), Monday, 29 August 2011 21:28 (fourteen years ago)
because they're obsessing over Tyler's concerns with black culture? Like his love of Pharrell Williams and Waka Flocka?
― step your 'îron game up, jamie xx (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 29 August 2011 21:30 (fourteen years ago)
post-millienial internet nihilism is doing a lot more to validate odd future than odd future is doing to validate fans of vice magazine

i def agree that "post-millienial internet nihilism" is helping them with sales among 4chan types and the /mu/ board or whatever, but p sure it has nothing to do with the reason that 30 year old, Murikami-reading, Herzog-watching rock critics are slobbering on them, which is what we were talking about.

Count me in as another late 20-something who grew up with Buzz Bin, Beavis and Butthead and TRL. I've felt out of touch with the people that show up on the VMAs for the past 3 years. Everyone wore costumes because they're all my age and saw the Spice Girls wear the same silly clothes in 97. Gaga, Katy and Nicki need to bite the bullet and become a girl group, they'll be all "GRRL POWER RAWR!".

ok fair enough i wasnt really paying attn to all the work 'press' was doing in that quote
i guess i still think an essay about how certain strains of niche 'white' culture have permeated/influenced a much wider group of old milwaukee-swilling, gurren laggen-watching 20 yr olds is a lot more interesting but w/e
