And I'm glad they got him to do the Amy tribute instead of going the more obvious route, cause Adele's Sarah Mclachlan-disguised as soulster ass would have butchered it.

haha xp

markers aurelius (The Reverend), Monday, 29 August 2011 08:40 (fourteen years ago)

yeah he was a decent choice -- the thing about it was that he could do an up tempo song and make more of a fun, celebratory thing than if they had someone singing one of her ballads

J0rdan S., Monday, 29 August 2011 08:44 (fourteen years ago)

it's weird, thinking more about it, thankfully she did a song like "valerie" bcuz they couldn't do a tribute by singing "rehab" obviously, and even "you know i'm no good" and "back in black" would have a weird undertone after her death

J0rdan S., Monday, 29 August 2011 08:46 (fourteen years ago)

Right. In that regard, maybe "Valerie" wasn't as odd of a choice as it looked. Pretty much anything from Back to Black would have either been too down, or too close to the bone, or both, and the stuff from Frank isn't well-known enough. I had assumed it was going to be a medley when it started though.

you know Tyler is old enough to remember MTV which is why he was suitably geeked; but I wonder whats gonna happen in like 5 or 10 years when teenage stars only know MTV as the Jersey Shore channel

is that really true, though? wasn't MTV the Real World/Road Rules Challenge Channel when he was 9?

What a vile human who says naughty things in his lyrics, lets all compare him to woman beaters and child molesters.

not entirely sure why Whiney is being all "cap'n save-a-walking-stereotype" here unless he's got money involved in Tyler's career

No, I got the reference, I was just lol wuting the combo of Dire Straits and Burzum being hilarious.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 29 August 2011 15:45 (fourteen years ago)

dan, i don't even know what you're getting at w/ "walking stereotype" shit. Tyler doesn't even say faggot like 50 Cent or T.I. or Rick Ross. He says faggot like a 19 year old Ron Paul supporter yelling at his World Of Warcraft game.

Like, I'm definitely not cosigning tyler's f-bombs. It's def wrong and stupid and immature as fuck. But like it doesn't make him a "stereotype" or put him on the level of people who urinate on children.

step your 'îron game up, jamie xx (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 29 August 2011 15:48 (fourteen years ago)

this was alternately hilarious and sad. Justin Bieber looks like a nerdy little lesbian robot. the Lady Gaga and Brian May thing was like some sort of terrible Kids in the Hall performance art parody sketch, and yet I came away with the distinct impression that this is something that is intended to be taken seriously...? Chris Brown's bit was more like a circus act than a musical performance, makes me think that people have really lost interest in the performative aspect of pop music in general (nobody interested in watching someone physically play or sing, too boring). the woman with the leg in the cast in the white chair and her band playing under the ads, man that was so sad... had no idea who they were, just started referring to them as the Taco Bell Farmer's Insurance Dove Bar Band.

I guess you can sit there and argue until you're blue in the face about how a pack of black kids becoming famous for nihilistic, violent lyrics and blatant real-life misogyny during their stage show is a new, startling development in the perception of young black people in America but it's a position dripping with so much blind white privilege and outright stupidity that I really didn't think anyone on this site would get behind it; congrats on your devil's advocacy, I guess?

now I have to imagine your penis (DJP), Monday, 29 August 2011 15:53 (fourteen years ago)

a pack of black kids becoming famous for nihilistic, violent lyrics primarily inspired by the recorded output of a multi-platinum, ubiquitous white rapper

step your 'îron game up, jamie xx (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 29 August 2011 15:58 (fourteen years ago)

Dan, I obv don't want to dismiss how you feel personally about how OFWGKTA represents the black community or whatever. That's important to you and obv something I can't speak to.

But I mean to the majority of people who actually know OF lyrics they are a product of the predominately white Pitchfork/Vice/Thrasher/Fader culture. To anyone that DOESNT know their music, they presented themselves at the VMAs as industry suckup toadies psyched to get a meaningless award.

step your 'îron game up, jamie xx (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 29 August 2011 16:02 (fourteen years ago)

I don't disagree with any of that; the difference is that I see that as even more problematic in terms of the ardor with which they're being embraced. For some hard-to-divine reason*, I find it really really really REALLY problematic when the white press falls all over themselves to praise some kid whose music I don't really like anyway and cite as the main reason how willing he is to talk about how viciously he want to mistreat women and how easy it is for him to drop homophobic slurs.

We've already told Chris Brown that it is totally cool and okay for him to have smacked Rihanna silly because hey we weren't there and she probably had it coming. I don't think it's particularly cool or a good idea to tell Tyler it's totally cool and okay for him to frame his entire artistic persona as a nihilistic, woman-hating shit.

* yes I read your first paragraph

now I have to imagine your penis (DJP), Monday, 29 August 2011 16:14 (fourteen years ago)

I think I am incapable of being shocked by any degree of nihilism/mysogyny/homophobia/take your pick in popular music, it's been the lingua franca for my entire adult life

satisfying punishment for that thing he said about lesbians (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 29 August 2011 16:17 (fourteen years ago)

and that's a bad trend, and odd future aren't helping

۩ (crüt), Monday, 29 August 2011 16:20 (fourteen years ago)

I've been meaning to write an essay on this for a while. I honestly think there is some new-millennial Norman Mailer shit going on where the white press is fawning over dude because he likes Toro Y Moi and skateboarding and slasher flicks and Vice magazine—stuff white ppl consider THEIR culture. Like when a cool black dude comes out and co-signs our obsessions, it VALIDATES the white hipster "culture" (lol) in a weird way, and ppl can't wait to tell everyone.

Remember how everyone went BATSHIT because Jay-Z went to a Grizzly Bear show?
