I played Wolf Eyes (a tape of a track from 'Dread') for two friends who haven't heard much noise before. We had just smoked a lot of pot. One of them was unable to move and commented that he felt like monkeys were beating his skull in. It was pretty funny.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 14:40 (twenty-three years ago)

the "dread" cd is 'on' bulb. the "dread" lp is 'on' american tapes+hanson, according to the back of it anyway. more interestingly and less pedantically, the LP is being reissued soon for vinylists.

your null fame (yournullfame), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 17:01 (twenty-three years ago)

PEDANT ALERT: The CD I have has all three labels listed on the back.

hstencil, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 17:02 (twenty-three years ago)

i have THE LP, damn you! THE ORIGINAL VINYL! MY CRED = UNASSAILABLE.

incidentally, anyone who uses soulseek should look for the live 11.15.01 video and audio by wolf eyes, it's fucking great. as are the two CDRs ("half dogs" aka olson mix and untitled aka dilloway mix) i've seen around.

may i re-emphasize my earlier point (see first response in this thread):

SEE THEM LIVE.

(although I am bummed they played 5 shows in SF in 2001, only 3 this year. :-\ )

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 18:33 (twenty-three years ago)

i'll be at the bottom of the hill show. yes i will

They are not playing NYC, unfortunately.

hstencil, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 19:30 (twenty-three years ago)

they need to come east-coastal. i missed them this past summer at oops.

marcg (marcg), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 19:31 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, if they had made it to the east coast with caroliner, it would've been a wet dream.

your null fame (yournullfame), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 20:20 (twenty-three years ago)

just saw this today

http://sfbg.com/37/25/art_music_wolf.html

marcg (marcg), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 19:15 (twenty-three years ago)

The show I saw of Oops! last summer kinda sucked (well, Wolf Eyes did.) I saw them a bit earlier at The Candle Factory in Providence (with Danse Asshole and Prurient) and they rocked the fuckin house, though.

Dread roolz. Slicer is less intense but also roolz.

Ian Johnson, Thursday, 20 March 2003 02:08 (twenty-three years ago)

the show last night was i.n.t.e.n.s.e.

JasonD (JasonD), Friday, 28 March 2003 07:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Most revived thread ever?

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 28 March 2003 09:11 (twenty-three years ago)

two months pass...
revive! cos i've been listening to dread & the drumm/dilloway cassette a lot recently, and i've noticed some new (?) tapes on slsk recently (droll vol 12, dead at hemlock sf 3-27-03 etc). so what else is good?

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 04:45 (twenty-three years ago)

i stand by the wolf eyes "half dogs" and s/t cdrs - one mixed by dilloway, one by olson. and fucking MUGGER kicks your fucking ass.

your null fame (yournullfame), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 05:24 (twenty-three years ago)

"Dread" is fucking classic! even if only for "burn your house down". I haven't seen them live and it woun't happen any time soon, i'm depressed :(

Jrvision (visionjr), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 08:14 (twenty-three years ago)

toby,
i was at that hemlock show, very different from the other 4 shows i've seen. the lights were on, dilloway and olson were laughing almost the whole show. very good, i'll look for it on slsk. the dolphins next to me were eeping in delight!

j0hn dwy3r was next to me talking loudly the entire show about (!!!) himself (!!!) imagine that gee whiz.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 15:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Dread is a fucking classic album.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 15:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Wolf Eyes need to get they fool asses back down to Providence--we haven't seen 'em even remotely nearby since Oops! The Tour.

That said, Mugger rules, Dread rules, Slicer is pretty good, and they eat my fucking face live. Today, on my record shopping binge, I might pick up the split LP with Crack: We Are Rock if they still have it at Armageddon.

Ian Johnson, Tuesday, 10 June 2003 15:52 (twenty-three years ago)

(is there a Faxed Head thread?)

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 16:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Wolf Eyes needs to get they punk asses to the UK. Does anyone like their earlier stuff like the s/t cd on Bulb?

JW if you're searching for old hardcore threads to revive then look hard for the one where Aaron Dilloway himself comes and puts the smackdown on some ILM guy it's funny.

ss, Tuesday, 10 June 2003 16:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't cast revive thread, this time.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 16:07 (twenty-three years ago)

search: "strangled in filth". runs a wide spectrum. might be my fav....

marcg (marcg), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 16:10 (twenty-three years ago)

faxed head thread?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 17:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Wolf Eyes needs to get they punk asses to the UK. Does anyone like their earlier stuff like the s/t cd on Bulb?

yes. though it really does seem like john olson joining made them the machine they are today.

JW if you're searching for old hardcore threads to revive then look hard for the one where Aaron Dilloway himself comes and puts the smackdown on some ILM guy it's funny.

the one where he criticizes someone for not listening to to live and shave in LA 'correctly'? that wasn't funny, it was sad.

your null fame (yournullfame), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 23:36 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, shit like that just reminds me of why i tried to get as far away from hardcore as possible when i left college

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 23:42 (twenty-three years ago)

shit like that just reminds me of you, jess.

(damn I'm mean today)

hstencil, Wednesday, 11 June 2003 04:08 (twenty-three years ago)

old dog, new tricks, etc.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 04:20 (twenty-three years ago)

i saw wolf eyes at a house party in k-town. they just made loud noise.

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 04:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Has anybody heard the Mugger thing? I saw Aaron Dilloway last night, but didn't have any money to buy any records from him (he was fucking fantastic, btw).

hstencil, Sunday, 22 June 2003 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i thought it was fucking hilarious

ssean, Sunday, 22 June 2003 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

the show or the record?

hstencil, Sunday, 22 June 2003 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

haha no the thread where aaron dilloway gets all cry-baby about to live and shave. 'mugger' is a monster not to be laughed at!

ssean, Sunday, 22 June 2003 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

uh, okay, I don't remember the thread, but that's cool. TLASILA rules too, btw.

hstencil, Sunday, 22 June 2003 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

when did mugger actually come out btw? i have it on bulb and it says 2003 but i'm not sure if that just refers to the reissue. it was def made before 'dread' right?

ssean, Sunday, 22 June 2003 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

the copy I saw last night said "recorded in March 2003."

hstencil, Sunday, 22 June 2003 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

haha yes the link to the aaron dilloway interjection to TLASILA thread thus:
to live & shave in L.A. what are they up to?
note my weakness and confusion. i was practically homeless roundabout then!
wolf eyes? dead hills ok. dread poo.

bob snoom, Sunday, 22 June 2003 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

YOU ARE COMPLETELY INSANE, MR. BOB SNOOM. Dread is great, just got finished listening to it.

hstencil, Sunday, 22 June 2003 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

oh dear...

bob snoom, Sunday, 22 June 2003 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

DUDE!< /mock indignation>

Seriously, though, I think Dread is great (as do a lot of others here, apparently). What about it do you not like?

hstencil, Sunday, 22 June 2003 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

well i just slung it on to see - it's not really bas per se it just takes ages of dicking around before the tunes DO anything. to me they are conjuring a "fischerspooner for daytime drinkers" vibe right now

bob snoom, Sunday, 22 June 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

bas=bad

bob snoom, Sunday, 22 June 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

'dead hills' is better

ssean, Sunday, 22 June 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Dread feels like an LP. Dead Hills feels like an EP.

Dead Hills and Black Dice - Lost Valley came out around the same time and would have made a good split.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Sunday, 22 June 2003 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

jon williams have you heard 'creature', black dice's new song yet? what do you think?

ssean, Sunday, 22 June 2003 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

no, I haven't where do I get this? What is it for?

Jon Williams (ex machina), Sunday, 22 June 2003 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

i think it's coming out on dfa backed with that eYe remix no? i got it off slsk

ssean, Sunday, 22 June 2003 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

The EyE mix didn't impress me

Jon Williams (ex machina), Sunday, 22 June 2003 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Saw them at Netil House last night...hahahahah they are SO SO SO CAMP live! I'd only ever seen Nate Young solo before and that was a really sombre, dark, slow set. This was him and John Olson wearing cut-off denim jackets and leather camps doing yr archetypal hype-macho stances for an hour. Louder than I thought was possible too. Their new guitarist dude is wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiild!

They were supported by Folkazoid (who would have been awesome if I was stoned and seventeen) and Porn (Thurston Moore and Bill Gould from Faith No More doing some kind of improv avant metal shit, was geat, Thurston spent the whole gig looking like he was about to blat every where. Ended with some crucial thrash shit) who were wicked.

Sad to not see a single ironic fist pump all night tho.

I like to think I have learnt a thing or two about music (Neil S), Tuesday, 26 November 2013 15:45 (twelve years ago)

The Dale Crover Porn is a different Porn, isn't it?

JACK SQUAT about these Charlie Nobodies (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 26 November 2013 15:49 (twelve years ago)

tbh I've never been quite sure, and they are tricky to search for online! I thought they're all part of the same collective-type-thing though?

I like to think I have learnt a thing or two about music (Neil S), Tuesday, 26 November 2013 15:50 (twelve years ago)

Yeah I suppose that's possible, I just always thought of the Dale Crover version first. This new line-up sounds great too.

JACK SQUAT about these Charlie Nobodies (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 26 November 2013 15:53 (twelve years ago)

regardless, Experiments in Feedback is great, particularly the final track which is 15min long and is a loop of a particularly nasty bit of feedback. Far out!

one year passes...

http://www.thefader.com/2015/10/22/wolf-eyes-i-am-a-problem-mind-in-pieces

new one's pretty cool! some straight up (relatively speaking) rock songs on this. rotted out stooges and spacemen 3 jams.

made me revisit "No Answer: Lower Floors" which didn't connect at the time. appreciating it this time around.

circa1916, Sunday, 25 October 2015 04:29 (ten years ago)

and yeah, last time i saw them (2 years ago?) i didn't know how to take 'em. as mentioned above, it was pretty camp. like cartoon dystopian splatter punk rockin' out. don't know how they were in the glory days, but the previous time i saw them (6 years ago?) they were pretty straight n0ize dude noodlin'.

related to Wolf Eyes, Dilloway made a playlist of his favorite "weird" Smithsonian Folkways records, and it's really amazing.

Saw these guys for the first time in 20 years last night…what I remember from back then was more of an extreme blown out noise sound, but this time they had more of a non-Jazz Funk Throbbing Gristle vibe but with a louder background, kind of like Second Annual Report as played by 00s freaker basement show dudes. Looks like the tour’s wrapping up in a couple nights but I thought it was a good time.

Slim is an Alien, Thursday, 12 September 2024 17:48 (one year ago)

They were definitely mellower last night then any time I'd seen them in the past (I didn't have to punch my way out of a riot 'natch) but the dubbier/weird vibe has been what the last few releases have been like, at least the ones I've heard

But I thought it was great, it is always great to see them

Funny thing about this gig which I didn't know until last night was that this was the gig that got them signed to Sub Pop, it was with Caroliner and it was in the foyer of some admin building and it was...not great

chr1sb3singer, Thursday, 12 September 2024 19:46 (one year ago)

the last time i saw them someone (maybe in the band?) pulled the fire alarm and they just kept playing lmfao
