My favorite parts were the "red" vocal recitation in the first section, and then those endless rolling ring-modulated waves going back and forth in the second one. We were right next to the far-left speaker in the back though, and definitely caught some way-too-loud frequencies at certain points.

hearing the piece in surround was like hearing it for the first time, I was fully gone from the very first filter sweep

Btw is that your blog? I'm afraid I may have made some less than courteous comments there in the past; if it's yours you have my humblest apologies.
― viborg, Sunday, 4 September 2011 22:25 (fourteen years ago)
no, that's not my blog--my blog is here: http://www.theoriginalsoundtrack.com
heading out to see optimo in a few! will report back!
― geeta, Monday, 5 September 2011 00:50 (fourteen years ago)
How was it?
I like that article about Conrad Schnitzler you wrote. Honestly I'd never heard of him before but fascinating that he seemed to influence so many other artists, including Thomas Fehlmann among others. I couldn't figure out a way to comment on the blog in a way that allowed me to use a recognizable name, but I was just going to say it was an interesting article, so no biggie.
― viborg, Wednesday, 7 September 2011 00:42 (fourteen years ago)
thanks, glad you liked it!
The Optimo gig in NYC was tough. They had played in SF the night before--a four-hour set, they told me--and they'd only slept for an hour. Then they flew cross-country to NYC, and ended up spending the entire day in transit because their flight from SF was delayed. They flew into Newark, apparently, landed at about 2 AM, cabbed it up to the venue in Brooklyn at top speed and made it there a bit before 3 AM. Back on the decks, right after a six hour flight and no sleep! The venue (Littlefield) closed at 4 AM. The NYC gig was good, even against the odds, but I wish I'd been at the SF gig.

one of the many great moments in their set was when they suddenly dropped in this old northern soul tune
and wow, what a tune

― geeta, Wednesday, 7 September 2011 01:09 (fourteen years ago)
oh yeah, and seeing all the horse meat disco guys up front lose their heads to 'menergy'
that was a moment, right there
― geeta, Wednesday, 7 September 2011 02:01 (fourteen years ago)
The SF gig was indeed spectacular, but I have a feeling they play a lot more often in NYC. Apparently this was their first time playing together in SF. I wish they would have played a little more of the classic 90's house that the SF crowd seems to love. Overall just a really nice night though.

now thats a tune.

Kimo's is rumored to be closing.
I saw the first bay area appearances of Black Dice, Wolf Eyes, Andrew WK, Lightning Bolt (the Power of Salad & Milkshakes footage shows me standing on a table here)... lots of good memories.

what I heard is that it's being sold, and the new owners don't plan to have live shows anymore.

A friend of mine has started up a very informative substack showcasing San Francisco/Bay Area musicians and artists, record labels and events/releases. Lots of focus on new/underground up and coming artists but also looking back to some legends of old too. Not limited by genre or scene, though some of the early posts focus on a few labels and genres, everything is on the table if it's worth sharing. Latest post covers Oakland's Lower Grand Radio, Xyla, Lunchbox, and Santana among others.
