noodle vague digs boozy chick shock.

This'll be her first American show; I'm presuming that she'll be able to keep it together. She's booked for two sets.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 12 January 2007 16:12 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not saying anything that hasn't been said, but "Rehab" is just fucking fantastic (esp the Hot Chip rmx).

Haven't heard anything else that I've even liked, though I haven't heard much. So, like Kelly Clarkson, she's a song to me.

Adam Beales (Pye Poudre), Friday, 12 January 2007 16:20 (nineteen years ago)

Okay I know when I've been pwned.

Clothing the Gotterdammerung Doors (noodle vague), Friday, 12 January 2007 18:26 (nineteen years ago)

Somewhat exhaustive (exhausted?) take on Winehouse after seeing her live.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 18 January 2007 11:10 (nineteen years ago)

ah she has come so far since i first heard her name! (flicking idly through a pile of unloved promos in the student newspaper office when i was editor of the magazine in 03; about to discard unpromisingly amateur cd when my film editor goes "oh, that's amy, i went to school with her, she's ok y'know", so i was like "ok, i'll listen!" - and it was terrific.)

eppy you know that 'me and mr jones (fuckery)' is about her crush on nas?

the first album has flaws (it's patchy, and she bellows rather than sings too much) but search 'amy amy amy', 'fuck me pumps' and 'take the box' - they're all fantastic.

lex pretend (lex pretend), Thursday, 18 January 2007 11:34 (nineteen years ago)

forks, even. don't know why i thought you were eppy.

lex pretend (lex pretend), Thursday, 18 January 2007 11:35 (nineteen years ago)

dude I would have liked to read your article but I have vowed never to read past the dread words "sophomore effort".

alext (alext), Thursday, 18 January 2007 13:26 (nineteen years ago)

How about "junior jinx"? "Senior smash"?

She talked onstage about the Nas thing Lex (with Jigga in the house even) and yeah, I've listened to Frank for the past week; "patchy" is the word.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 18 January 2007 15:30 (nineteen years ago)

The ever-popular tortured artist effect.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 06:45 (nineteen years ago)

Well yeah I assumed she was totally Tom Waits-ing it. But I have friends in the know who assure me she's genuinely fucked, god bless her.

It's Tough to Beat Illious (noodle vague), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 09:01 (nineteen years ago)

why did you think she was faking it nv? (if that's what you mean by tom waitsing it)

antidote against poisoning (lex pretend), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 09:46 (nineteen years ago)

It’s the age old question. What is more important, the art or a person's life? And how much responsibility does an audience have for enabling self-destructive behavior? See any Cat Power thread. I like what little I've heard, but she needs to get her ass to rehab.

TS: Amy Winehouse vs. Pete Docherty

about:coffee (fandango), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 13:38 (nineteen years ago)

otm. both twats.

the original hauntology blogging crew (Enrique), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 13:40 (nineteen years ago)

her first album was better.

I guess I always hope when somebody is publicly self-destructing that it's part of the persona they're creating. It would kinda make sense that on the back of an album of melancholy booziness she'd method act the character a bit.

It's Tough to Beat Illious (noodle vague), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 13:48 (nineteen years ago)

you're implying something I'm not there enrique, I was just wondering if there's a double standards thing going on here...

I haven't heard any of her stuff (apart from 'Rehab') properly yet fwiw.

about:coffee (fandango), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 13:51 (nineteen years ago)

well, she actually sells records and her drug (that we know of) is legal. i don't think there's a double standard.

the original hauntology blogging crew (Enrique), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 13:55 (nineteen years ago)

isnt it a bit too obvious though, the way theyre trying to present her as a tortured, self destructive artist in the vein of other great tortured self destructive artists. its a bit predictable at this point.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 14:02 (nineteen years ago)

very much so, same with him.

the original hauntology blogging crew (Enrique), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 14:03 (nineteen years ago)

they should have done a reality TV style video for rehab with her being sent to then chucked out of the priory.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 14:32 (nineteen years ago)

Artistic self destruction is so twentieth century.

Ice Cream Electric (Ice Cream Electric), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 15:14 (nineteen years ago)

she's just spectacular. "just friends" and "tears dry on their own" are terrif. even my most grumpy of pals can't help but acknowledge that those two tracks are great.

cybele (cybele), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 21:36 (nineteen years ago)

the album is fantastic and I'm glad america seems to falling over itself for her - but amy should just chuck it all and be a permanent guest on buzzcocks, really.

danzig (danzig), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 22:21 (nineteen years ago)

one month passes...
i love Amy! Even if she does sound like she's got a cock down her throat

I know, right?, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 21:55 (nineteen years ago)

Isn't she the one I will be leaving the Bowery Ballroom to miss when the Pipettes are done?

I just don't know her... do I stay?

Saxby D. Elder, Thursday, 8 March 2007 05:34 (nineteen years ago)

She's much better than the Pipettes. So yes, stay.

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 8 March 2007 05:46 (nineteen years ago)

miss the pipettes!

lex pretend, Thursday, 8 March 2007 08:41 (nineteen years ago)

Really, much better than the pippettes.

I know, right?, Thursday, 8 March 2007 09:32 (nineteen years ago)

Due to them being completely shite.

I know, right?, Thursday, 8 March 2007 09:38 (nineteen years ago)

that, and amy being really good.

lex pretend, Thursday, 8 March 2007 09:40 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, of course. Stronger than me is really lovely and although I've never seen her live, her live t.v. performances are so garishly shambolic and throaty. And above that really great. To go back to the Church/Winehouse Beat It performance. Amy's voice kinda veers all over the backing, like an R'nB Alec Ounsworth, shit and wonderful in equal measures. Church sounds so dead and together in comparison. All that staccatto enunciation and phrasing. I repeatedly go back to it on Youtube. It's also HILARIOUS.

I know, right?, Thursday, 8 March 2007 09:57 (nineteen years ago)

Not to over-criticize Church. She's kindof like the straight man. No Church, no funny.

I know, right?, Thursday, 8 March 2007 09:59 (nineteen years ago)

That's like "Puttin on the Ritz" from Young Frankenstein.

I would absolutely watch Charlotte Church and Amy Winehouse's Detective Agency.

accentmonkey, Thursday, 8 March 2007 13:26 (nineteen years ago)

pisces, Thursday, 8 March 2007 19:02 (nineteen years ago)

Dude what is up with tha Pipettes hatin? I LOVE them (otherwise I wouldn't be going, obviously). Someone not liking something is not the same as them being shite either.

Thanks, if she doesn't cancel, I will stick around and check out Amy.

Saxby D. Elder, Thursday, 8 March 2007 19:25 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, I know that is true, I just think they are completely rubbish. Sorry bout the overbearing-ness. Friends?

I know, right?, Thursday, 8 March 2007 20:15 (nineteen years ago)

they are shite, not quite sure what they've got to do with Amy Winehouse like....

fandango, Thursday, 8 March 2007 20:17 (nineteen years ago)

Like, they're both chicks

I know, right?, Friday, 9 March 2007 18:21 (nineteen years ago)

"unforseen circumstances" = crystal meth?

pinder, Friday, 9 March 2007 18:51 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, friends, tot cool... (and my first on this board, I might add).

Yeah, I asked around and not many people could figure out why the Pipettes-- love em or hate em-- were on the bill with Amy. (I still haven't had a chance to check her out but I will definitely stick around to see her on your say-so).

The Pipettes have added 2 headlining gigs in the area since this one was booked, so those will probably be better for gettin your polka dot on anyway.

Saxby D. Elder, Friday, 9 March 2007 18:51 (nineteen years ago)

"unforseen circumstances" = crystal meth?

pinder on Friday, 9 March 2007 18:51 (59 minutes ago)

that would be guess number 2 on my top 5 think.

pisces, Friday, 9 March 2007 19:52 (nineteen years ago)

So, Back to Black was released here today, and they took "Addicted" off the record and put that Ghostface remix of "No Good"on instead. WHY?!? Ghostface is basically just screaming over the track, he's totally off beat.

The Brainwasher, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 18:56 (nineteen years ago)

i hated her on the sandbox, i hate her here!

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 23:46 (nineteen years ago)

I understand hating her media persona, but how can you hate the music? It's so... good.

The Brainwasher, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 00:03 (nineteen years ago)

but see... it isn't. she doesn't even have a media persona to hate in the US. she's just another terrible british import that'll be gone and forgotten within a year (possibly scuffing lily allen's heels on her way out).

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 00:11 (nineteen years ago)

Just saw her video on MTV this morning and been reading about her. She kinda sounded like Shirley Bassey in the video (that's good). The rhythm track was not that unique--standard retro samples--I had read real nice stuff about the production, but am not impressed (yet ?).

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 02:20 (nineteen years ago)

Saw her do "Rehab" on Letterman last night. I had never heard the song, and before I started paying attention I could've sworn she was singing, "They tried to make me Puerto Rican and I said no, no, no!"

marmotwolof, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 02:52 (nineteen years ago)

I thought the US release was going to keep "Addicted" and add the acoustic take of "Love is a Losing Game." Either way, it's better than the Canadian version.. or at least the promos they sent out. Mine just has "Addicted" lopped off and it's just ten tracks long without anything else added.

Quinn Omori, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 09:15 (nineteen years ago)

Rehab was the one I never really got into till much later. Until I'd watched the Amy documentary, to be specific.

Alba, Thursday, 5 December 2019 16:57 (six years ago)

the production is what’s retro 60’s sounding, and it’s easy to think she’s copping on a trend but it’s her style of singing & natural affinity for it that is what made & makex her special

her voice is more on par with jazz singers like Dinah Washington. that’s what’s special - her voice, and her instincts & phrasing, turning her own voice into an instrument of its oen. check out her live covers of old standards, or any of her early live performances & it’ll make more sense

or she’s just not yr bag & that’s ok too

american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 5 December 2019 18:12 (six years ago)

my appreciation of her grew significantly after her death and in my mind Back to Black is one of the greatest albums of the century so far. Ronson's production can be overbearing and gimmicky sometimes but in this case it was in service of an amazing talent.

akm, Thursday, 5 December 2019 19:29 (six years ago)

i absolutely love her 2-tone tracks on the expanded edition of B2B.
no production excess, just her live in the studio with a band providing her with the sounds she clearly loves.

mark e, Thursday, 5 December 2019 19:56 (six years ago)

dog latin, the Al Usher remix of Tears Dry On Their Own (lush disco) or the Mylo or MJ Cole remixes of Fuck Me Pumps might provide a way in for you?

I'm not even a fan of 2-tone, but this pierces me to the core, and opened my appreciation to the rest of her work.

five months pass...

There's so much to love on Back to Black, not least the nerve (and skill) to write a great new song on the backing track of an old one (Tears Dry/Ain't no Mountain High) and have it sound genuine and personal instead of just a gimmick.

― dinnerboat, Thursday, December 5, 2019 10:12 AM (five months ago) bookmarkflaglink

Huh, learned from this that the song was written first, and then adapted to Ain't No Mountain:

the scouse that roared (Matt #2), Saturday, 13 April 2024 22:23 (two years ago)

god, I thought that movie looked pointless and clueless, didn't realise it was absolutely fucking poisonous as well.
I really wanted to dislike Amy at the time because her stuff was popular with the dummies, but I made the mistake of listening to Back to Black and realised what a great artist she was. Likewise shocked and angry at her death.

assert (matttkkkk), Sunday, 14 April 2024 00:37 (two years ago)

First album is a banger too, I think I prefer that one. I saw her in Brighton just before Back to Black came out and it was scary how different she seemed by then - basically had a few mental breakdowns between songs too :( It was still a very good gig.

I liked the actor who play Amy in this film when she was in the Industry TV series… but I don’t have much confidence in this Biopic being good.

Chewshabadoo, Sunday, 14 April 2024 15:41 (two years ago)

I saw Amy play just once, Bestival 2008. She was over an hour late on stage and could barely stand. She sung about 20% of the songs, putting the mic in front of the audience to sing the rest. Her band were very professional, but it was all just really sad, it was obvious she didn't want to be there and shouldn't have been there.
