Sade: Classic or Dud?

i like the way her voice sounds like its pushing in this really flat way against the edges of her range.

She and the band SLAYED in Oakland last night! Her saxophone-man Stuart Matthewman nearly stole the show. Going again tonight before another 10 year wait.

She was so good when I saw her a few weeks ago. So totally cool, so totally in control, but she was definitely having fun, too. Super staging as well, totally subtle and tasteful, which is what I'd expect, but still more than I usually expect from an arena. Love the economy/restraint of her band.

I was there for an event his wife was hosting. There was one room set up as a studio and there was all this Sade memorabilia around, then I noticed the platinum plaques on the walls and was like wait a minute...

"They take really long vacations."

For some of these acts who disappear for a long stretch, I sort of want every single generically titled thread to be amended with either "not an RIP thread" or "there is a new album coming out."

I saw her live a couple of years ago. She moves with such purpose. She will live forever.

As a singer, Sade sounds like no one else. There’s a plangent tone to her voice, a liking for the long-held note, almost vibrato-free. A precision of diction. No melisma, no swooping octave leaps. And there are two very distinct tones – softness with just a slight husk in the bottom range, and above that, a more strident note, bringing a hardness which is vital, adding the only sharp edge.

It's just a brilliant piece. That Chet Baker comparison Sade gave her! Astounding.

Andrew Hale (from the band) was on Test Pressing's radio show at the weekend for a Sade special. They only seem to have recorded the first hour but I went into the chatroom and asked what was happening with a new Sade album and near the end of the show he confirmed it is being actively worked on.

In the wikipeida article about Sade (band) it says Eric B and Rakim referenced Smooth Operator in Paid In Full. I can't find the sample or lyrical reference. Can someone point out what i'm missing?

that statement on wikipedia seems to be based on a misreading of the quote from rakim that is cited.

I moved cities a couple of months ago and didn't bring my record player (or much of anything else besides my clothes and laptop) and tbh i doubt i'll ever get a record player because i feel less attached to physical media by the day (yes, I know that the cloud and digital isn't forever and physical media is Actually Good for preservation etc) but i still want this set so badly

diamond life and promise were dollar bin staples a few years ago, super easy to find great copies for cheap. don't know if that's still the case. i've never seen anything from tld onward in a bin. used cds on the other hand are plentiful iirc.

what i would personally kill for otoh is a complete set of remixes on vinyl.
