if you are a victim of abuse you of course have every right to joke about whatever you want regarding it.

I don't know, again, just speaking for me, it's even better if the guy making the jokes doesn't even have a horse in the race. like me, of course I'm going to cheer on somebody going in on an abuser. but if the guy going in is just a normal person instead of "one of us," so to speak? that's icing on the cake - it affirms that the outraged feelings of the victim are valid. imo only obv. yo this is where a lot of creepiness comes from for me! i agree that the tweet wasn't so bad. it wasn't until he starts getting gruesome and constantly emphasizing "beating the CRAP out of rihanna" that sort of makes me think that he doesn't have her best interest at heart, cause it sounds like he's just using the image of her injured body to make his point in an edgy and humorous way

Okay, I think these last couple of posts sum it up for me here, because I'd only seen the gif and read the transcripts. I can't play the video at work. Seems like the video itself is where the disconnect is coming into play.

I can concede that point pretty readily zach. I can imagine a lot of people looking at it in that light. for me the brutality being emphasized, even overemphasized, is good, because one strategy of the whole abusive mindset is to call into question the account of the victim - "did he really 'beat her up,' or was it more of a squabble?" etc. so I sometimes think it's good to spell out real plainly what we're talking about when we talk about abuse, lest people stroke their chins and go "hmm well what exactly does 'abuse' mean?" and shit

that's an important point, definitely -- kind of going along with how people tend to respond w disgust (in the wrong way) when a film portrays rape violently rather than overly sexy -- but i still see this andy levy dude as going for chuckles and easy agreement more than making an actual statement about the assault. the constant chuckling in the video is disconcerting bc they're laughing at his specific details of her injuries as much as everything else. and i just can't squint enough to stop seeing it as opportunistic and exploitative.

and "making an actual statement about the assault" also refers to making a statement about chris brown's ignorance and entitlement, i know that's more the point.

Really, as far as my individual reaction goes, setting aside any larger issues for the moment, I'm happy to see anyone go in on Brown like this because I'm fairly disgusted in general about how this has hardly amounted to more than a speedbump in his career.

I think the fact that he ends with "the only thing Chris Brown is guilty of is a felony" takes this a little out of the realm of "I am using a famous woman's pain for cheap lols", plus his entire demeanor during the video is not that of a Norm MacDonald yuk yuk lookit how awful what I'm saying is.

no that last line is definitely great but it doesn't really lord over the rest of the rant as much as levy seems to think. just bc it's the last line doesn't mean it's the definitive one, and there are more ways to be inconsiderate than to act like norm macdonald who at least doesn't try to build himself up as an arbiter of morality (not to say he's any better)

i think there is an aero thing upthread saying 'when the guy grows up this will stop'; it isn't brown's obliviousness or him 'wanting to act like it never happened' that prompts this, it's his repeat, offensive, unrepentant behaviour ever since that makes this fair game. if the guy was making whatever kind of moves one can be expected to humbly make to accept & atone for having done an awful thing then it would be one thing, but afaik he's releasing shitty singles that allude to 'coming out fighting' & wearing knuckle-dusters on stage & flirting with the same kind of thing rather than trying to either address or move past it. and for as long as he's doing that then getting called out on what he did is fair game. i think it's a different thing when you see someone start trashtalking at spitzer or whoever & the guy at least has at least gone through some period of public disavowal & repentance that means he can distance himself from his past (just to disclaim: i don't know shit about spitzer & so maybe this isn't right, but a hypothetical-'reformed'-public-wrongdoer or w/e).

& zachylon: i don't know if it sounds mad insensitive to say that this whole thing shouldn't be seen through the prism of the victims involved, but i don't think it should, entirely, & there would be downsides to restricting public actions in order to limit exposure of a topic (in a way that might be most preferable to those involved). i think a lot of this is about brown and brown after everything that has happened, and if it's a separate issue to be able to call him out on that - which the guy does, re: his smashing up a tv studio & i guess re: the weird dynamics of him and his fans.
