From Super ae, the last tune "Super Good" gets me everytime

dleone (dleone), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

My dad and I listened to VCN on the NY State Throughway (I-90) when we were moving home on a super nice sunny day. He ended up getting a speeding ticket; I think he felt like a ROCKET FLYING INTO TEH SUN.

PS - SPACE OH AHHHHHHHHH! OOHHHHHHHHHHH!

24 hours with the King of Snake. (SNAKE!) (ex machina), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

tough call, but from that record i have the strongest connection to "super are".

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Super Are is probably the world's best introduction to Boredoms. I have used it to start a few mixtapez.

i heard Vision Creation Newsun for the first time today, and, in the heat of this moment, i could quite believe that "OMG WTF LOL be sure to lido! lido! lido! OMG WTF LOL!", this could be the best thing i have ever heard

charltonlido (gareth), Friday, 28 May 2004 07:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Charltonlido, have you heard Super Ae?

Be sure to Loop! Loop, Loop, Loop. (ex machina), Friday, 28 May 2004 12:18 (twenty-two years ago)

no, i had never heard the boredoms until today

charltonlido (gareth), Friday, 28 May 2004 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

(This is why I hate Britain.) Have you heard Ruins or Lightning Bolt?

Be sure to Loop! Loop, Loop, Loop. (ex machina), Friday, 28 May 2004 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

'vision creation newsun' is really 'meh'.

''Eye performed with Zorn in a duo show right around the time of the Zorn 50th birthday shows at Tonic last year. Zorn told me he recorded something for him as well for possible release on Tzadik.
-- dleone (d_leon...), February 3rd, 2004.''

anyone know what happened to this? can't find anything on slsk.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 28 May 2004 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

From Tzadik's site:

Birthday Celebration Series
The Birthday Celebration series documents the best live shows from Zorn's historic performances in September 2003 at Tonic celebrating his 50th birthday.

and

Electric Masada: 50th Birthday Celebration Volume Four
The long awaited first release of Zorn's most recent and most powerful Masada unit. A true downtown supergroup, blending the raw power of Naked City with the improvisational madness of Cobra and the lyrical soul of the Masada songbook, Electric Masada is considered by many to be the most exciting band Zorn has ever had. This set, the taut climax of a three night run at Tonic, features the full octet at its wildest and most creative. Incredible solos, jaw dropping ensemble conductions and much more.

VCN reminds me of what I got to not like about certain fusion/prog. things a long while back. I do like some parts of it, but not the inspirational propulsive drumming sections.

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 28 May 2004 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I kinda think that the drums are too low in the mix for most of the propulsive heavy electronics + guitar stuff. It sounds better if you turn up the bass (or get a real stereo obv.).

Also, I noticed some of the drum stuff has sounds like this Balinese drum cuing stuff I heard this year.

Be sure to Loop! Loop, Loop, Loop. (ex machina), Friday, 28 May 2004 12:52 (twenty-two years ago)

i have a bootleg of it julio.

toby (tsg20), Friday, 28 May 2004 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

could i have a copy toby? is it on slsk?

i think i might buy super ae tomorrow, and that ghost album, i dont know about ooioo though, maybe another time

charltonlido (gareth), Friday, 28 May 2004 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Yea, OOIOO can wait dude, Super Ae is KILLAH.

Also, someone mentioned something about VoOoOoOoredoms looking to tour in the fall, anyone know anything about this?

Also, the Mukai Chie / Yamamoto Sei'ichi collab. is really cool -- kind of post-rockish. Only heard the first 20 minutes on the rainy ride to work, very fitting for riding across misty island and bays.

I just got Onanie Bomb Meets the Sex Pistols. Seems more like Pop Tatari than Soul Discharge.

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Thursday, 3 June 2004 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

the 'anal by anal' ep should be included as the last three tracks of 'onanie bomb'. check for these three tracks:

11. Anal Eater
12. God From Anal
13. Born To Anal

'anal eater' is the hit for sure

(Jon L), Thursday, 3 June 2004 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Super Roots 6.

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Thursday, 3 June 2004 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I only heard Super Roots 5 once; it was like an hour-long Bad Brains song. I think eYe credits it as the turning point in the Bore discog. Never seen a copy...

sexyDancer, Thursday, 3 June 2004 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Of the ones you listed, Super Roots 6 is best. Being as you tend to also like a bunch of noisier stuff, you might actually like Super Roots 5 (not sure if it's still as rare as it used to be - apparently, someone "found" a bunch of copies stored in a Warner Japan warehouse last year, and you started seeing them pop up pretty cheap on ebay). Anyway, it's not punk, more like an hour long noise-ambient thing, mostly cymbals and subtle sound effects. Pretty hard to take I think if you're listening closely the whole time, but not bad to use as strange background music.

Super Roots 3 is the one that sounds like Bad Brains to me, a 30 minute hardcore punk song, and I would agree is the turning point in their discography from playing fragmented splice-punk into playing more groove oriented stuff. But this isn't groove, it's hardcore, and really not *that* interesting. SR 1&2 are similar to what they were doing on Choc Synth and Pop Tatari. I think SR2 was actually only ever available with the Japanese issue of Choc Synth, though I downloaded it from somewhere, so you can find it.

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 3 June 2004 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

what d said, yeah.

sexyDancer, Thursday, 3 June 2004 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Any word on Voredoms, I think I mentioned upthread that the DVD is be rereleased, is this a Warner Japan signal to expect a VoOoOOredoms release?

Ian Johnson (orion), Friday, 4 June 2004 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok, does anyone know when the KXLU radio set floating around slsk is from? There's what appears to be an early version of Super Are You on it. I have another live version that makes it seem more like Chocolate Syth/Super Roots 1 era stuff.

More track IDs to come!

Voredoms be listening to Steve Reich's "Drumming" for sure.

jon, of your list above, super roots 6 is most essential.

from dleone's pitchfork review today:
1988's Onanie Bomb Meets the Sex Pistols ("onanie" being Japanese slang for "female masturbation")

"Onanie Bomb" is the rough English translation of Genbaku Onanies, the very first hardcore band from Japan. "Onanie" is a transliteration of the latin "onanism" which pertains to either sex last time i checked! :-D

By saying "Genbaku Onanies meets the Sex Pistols" they were trying to clue in potential listeners to what the band's influences were.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 7 June 2004 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

one more thing jon, that particular set was on a summer afternoon in 1995, the day of an awesome show at the palace in hollywood with thinking fellers union local 282. we ate at a mediocre chinese place across the street (is that place still there?). that was the debut of the "super ae" material in the usa.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 7 June 2004 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Gygax!, have you read the liner notes for the Mukai Chie / Yamamoto Sei'ichi CD? too much funny about LAMONES YOUNG!!

What does "kansai" mean?

Also: Nankai Hawkwind - RFI? (Eye, Nishida of Danse Macabre and Edi from Genbaku Onanies)

Apparently there was a whole series of noise bands whose names were puns on sports team + other band! and some compillation of said bands called Aiyoku Jinmin Juni Kyudan.

The liner notes go on about PRO WRESTLING pun noise bands!

Also, the notes talk about the idea of playing classic punk songs really slow. Hmmm...

Thanks for THE INFO!

http://www.ottawa-anime.org/~eyevocal/boredoms/boresdl3.htm sez:

NANKAI HAWKWIND
Nankai Hawkwind (Japan 7",Watanabe Records/Underground (Japan)--001--7" single) 1987

No line-up details, but a line-up I was given for their listing in the Guitar Barrio anti discography was: CHERRY--Vocals; EYE**--Vocals; EDDIE--Bass; ISONO--Drums; KITAJIMA--Guitar; MURANAOHITO--Guitar; SUGISAKU--Keyboards.

[Tracks/times?]

A Japanese art/noise supergroup. Their name was a play on the baseball team the Nankai Hawks (now known as the Daiei Hawks) and the English prog band Hawkwind. This single included some strands of the members' hair. [Print status?]

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Monday, 7 June 2004 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

amoeba has that mukai/yamamoto split for $7.99... i'll check it out.

yeah, i am always mispelling japanese words (in romanji) so i am forgiving when i read liner notes or lyrics.

kansai = japanese region where osaka/kyoto are (ie, where boredoms are from).

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 7 June 2004 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

damn you gygax - where were you when I was using my memory to fact check this thing?

dleone (dleone), Monday, 7 June 2004 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

great japanese band names

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 7 June 2004 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

are there any recordings (live or not) of the band Eye, Hira and Yamamoto were in before Boredoms (Acid Makki & something)?

dleone (dleone), Monday, 7 June 2004 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

not sure, but i can ask yamamoto in a couple days... ?

Also, Dominique thanks for the entertaining Boredoms read, but you know ... pitchfork ... ahem.
