This all explains why I went to this Hessle Audio thing in London this year and it wasn't very good and I felt too old and it was all guys 10+ years younger than me in neon rimmed raybans and polo shirts.
― Jung Danjah (admrl), Friday, August 19, 2011 5:15 PM (5 hours ago)
me too! was that mid-June sometime? We stuck around for hours hoping that Ben UFO's late set would change things, then he cleared the floor immediately and gave up after about four tracks.
― Merdeyeux, Friday, 19 August 2011 23:09 (thirteen years ago) link
I would not normally associate Hessle Audio with brostep at all.
― my brother's a basedgod (The Reverend), Friday, 19 August 2011 23:26 (thirteen years ago) link
why don't kids listen to gabber anymore, now that was quality music
Hope you're not being ironic, but I def agree. Fuck it, if you want your dance music moshy and cartoonish, just cut to the chase and put some fuckin' Johnny Violent on!

Think Planet-Mu tried for a bit of a gabba revival a few years back, but they made it too smart. Gabba's gotta be as retarded as possible to work properly.

Hessle Audio = Brostep? Wow you guys must live very sheltered upper city lives.
― Why'd You Wanna Tweet Me So Bad? (dog latin), Friday, 19 August 2011 23:33 (thirteen years ago) link
I don't live any kind of city life I was just visiting! But the thing I was at wasn't all Hessle Audio DJs - I don't know who most of them were - but it was, if not brostep, generally pretty harsh and filthy, with the floor of 20-year-olds clearing when anyone (like Ben UFO) went for anything different.
― Merdeyeux, Friday, 19 August 2011 23:39 (thirteen years ago) link
yeah fair dos. i guess one's tolerance for this kind of shit drops exponentially once you hit 18.

Could Night Slugs possibly be considered brostep? I really want to like this song but I'm wary of how catchy it is. I'm on the horns of the hipster dilemma.

Yes, Merdeyeux. We were at the same thing.
I know Hessle Audio isn't really anything like this stuff, I was talking more about the vibe of this night, which Merdeyeux adequately described.
― Lophar Andreusz DeLeone (admrl), Saturday, 20 August 2011 16:06 (thirteen years ago) link
Hessle Audio is way too interested in rhythm to be brostep.
― Matt DC, Saturday, 20 August 2011 17:34 (thirteen years ago) link
No Night Slugs is not brostep. Jeez, some of you have never been to the suburbs in your lives have you?
In other news, people are getting confused between dubstep and the Bomfunk Mcs these days it seems:

I'd be surprised if a Bro would even consider that Pearson Sound track (which is great btw) dubstep. Friend who came round and started playing me some of the crassest buzzsaw shit was completely unmoved when I played him the Hessle comp. They're such different sounds, it's a wonder they fall under the same umbrella.

- not from the music alone, but because they're one of the few um, forward-thinking or whatev labels that have interaction with the queer community which is significantly unbrolike brok
― fauxmarc, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 13:42 (thirteen years ago) link
Brostep is just post-Caspa, post-Pendulum, made-in-a-flash, just-plain-bad dubstep with not much "dub" and not a lot of step - slowed down jump up drum'n'bass with wacky samples from action movies or featuring some TV theme or 80s hit crowbarred in there somewhere.
FTR I actually have (or had?) a fair bit of time for Caspa - he was one of the first to do this kind of hard-'n'-heavy dubstep, and that's all fair enough, especially since he makes it relatively interesting from what I've heard. But now there's an increasing amount of terrible stuff - peaking this summer. It'll be like the opening chords from the Cheers theme tune "unexepctedly" interrupted by "BBBOOOOOMM-beeeerrrrrr-BOOOOOMMM-beeeerrrr-Eeeeh-eeeeh-eeeeh wouldn't you like to get awa-BOOOOOOOOMM-beeeeerrrrrrrr-eeeh-eeeh-eeeh-And they're always glad you-BOOM BOOM WHEEEEERRRRRR". Anyway, stuff like that. I don't normally get annoyed about it but it changes people's opinions of what dubstep is, and kind of makes me embarrassed to say I like dubstep these days.

Sully's album's worth a spin, although that's going into more 2-step revival territory. The new Zomby is surprisingly dancey and non-crazy

shit is blowing up in my little corner of the world. my 13yo cousin is listening to skrillex. two co-workers have asked me in the last day for dubstep recommendations. i'm not sure if they actually want dubstep or if "dubstep" is the new "techno".

mexican kids at my school were jerking to dubstep today. they are dressed like the kids in jerk videos from LA except they have candy raver bracelets on their arms. one of them had "JERK 4 LIFE" and "M F DUB STEP" written on his hands

"i'm not sure if they actually want dubstep or if "dubstep" is the new "techno"."
someone came in my store today and asked me i had a "dub or dubstep" section. so apparently dubstep is all things to all people.

skrillex was the vocalist for from first to last
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5yG6iw7AeWE
i keep a mental tally of musicians that went from punk/hardcore to dubious/bad edm
- steve aoki was in this machine kills, good emocore, i liked them i mean they had a split with yaphet kotto and envy- skrillex- dave nada (coincidentally about to tour with skrillex, solo dj, member of nadastrom and coiner of moombahton) - bassist? in de nada, thrashy dc punk in the 90's, also good
― fauxmarc, Saturday, 3 September 2011 14:17 (thirteen years ago) link
lol i heard a dubstep remix by true tiger of that punjabi mc song. it started off as normal, the broke down before it would usually get going, and went into some metallic staggered version of the song. i like this stuff just cos its funny and i like how generic and brainless it is but i just forget it all instantly. at least the older OG brosteppas (SALUTE) had more attitude and darkness in what they were doing.
