I mean I'm not super-eager to wade into this debate but... in a way I kind of dig the shock/estrangement effect that he creates in the Sentence In Question (I just saw the one quoted bit, still haven't looked at the original text) by lifting the profanities out of quotation marks and turning them into actions, or predicates of a subject—which is of course what they are, that's the whole point of profanity right? yr not just saying a word, yr performing a ~transgressive act~...

(yes I know that the n-word can be, and often is, used in a way that has very little 'profane' about it in this sense; but forgive me if I'm not exactly willing to give OF the benefit of the doubt here)

also I should point out that in general I am kind of an old lady about swearing in public, prone to quietly reprimanding or (more often) burying my head in my hands when my friends can't avoid the temptation to drop a million f-bombs within earshot of some little league baseball team at the pizza place or w/e

literally smacked my damn head watching that

i was out to dinner last night and i was scooting behind my brother's chair, but for some reason he lifted the chair up & back and landed right on my toe, to which i half yelled "fuck", and then immediately thought of this thread

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 9 August 2011 19:03 (fourteen years ago)

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 9 August 2011 19:06 (fourteen years ago)

yes, and completely analogous to when black people are called "nigger"

I am 100% certain that they were saying "nigga"; my point, and I suspect Albini's subconscious if not intentional point, is that they might as well have been saying "nigger", particularly given the rest of their behavior.

It's the distinction between being at your home and telling your friend with whom you always joke with "bitch, go get me a drink" and telling the waitress at a restaurant "bitch, go get me a drink". Inflammatory language being a-okay in one of your social contexts doesn't make it a-okay in all of your social contexts, and due to its origins "nigga" is not a value-neutral controversy-free word, otherwise it wouldn't get bleeped out of radio edits.

CLUB PISCOPO (DJP), Tuesday, 9 August 2011 19:06 (fourteen years ago)

and btw frogbs, your ppl are called "cheeseheads" because they choose to wear cheese on their heads

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 9 August 2011 19:07 (fourteen years ago)

dude, J0rdan, if you think I'm even 1% seriously comparing the two, you are a lot dumber than I give you credit for

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 9 August 2011 19:09 (fourteen years ago)

I think he is still making fun of frogbs

I mean, that seems to be the reasonable assumption to make

CLUB PISCOPO (DJP), Tuesday, 9 August 2011 19:10 (fourteen years ago)

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 9 August 2011 19:10 (fourteen years ago)

and btw frogbs, your ppl are called "cheeseheads" because they choose to wear cheese on their heads

that's not actually true. some Chicago Bears beat writer used it as an insulting term, and we embraced it and decided to use it among our own people

frogbs, Tuesday, 9 August 2011 19:12 (fourteen years ago)

just like black people reclaime-, ah never mind

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 9 August 2011 19:12 (fourteen years ago)

Gatsby was a success, in the end, wasn't he? (D-40), Tuesday, 9 August 2011 20:55 (fourteen years ago)

I ultimately think co-opting slurs into your self-identity are damaging and hurtful; there is a difference between claiming your right to control your reaction to hateful verbiage to reduce its power against you and referring to yourself via hateful verbiage, thereby reinforcing and cementing the negative stereotypes about your people. It is the epitome of slave mentality to wear a word used to strip your forbears of their basic human rights as a badge of honor and any narrative/justification that feeds into that is oppression from either a position of ignorance or privilege.

Kinda playing devil's advocate here, but what about "queer"?

dutty whiney (The Reverend), Tuesday, 9 August 2011 21:48 (fourteen years ago)

suggested replacement: "fruitheads"

king of torts (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Tuesday, 9 August 2011 21:51 (fourteen years ago)

what up all mah breederz

( •ิ.•ั) (gr8080), Tuesday, 9 August 2011 21:52 (fourteen years ago)

"queer" got reclaimed or was never 100% negative though, right? now "faggot" on the other hand...

mh, Tuesday, 9 August 2011 21:54 (fourteen years ago)

Since you asked for my opinion, I think it ultimately depends on where the term "queer" came from (which I don't know). If it came from within non-heterosexual communities, I don't really have an opinion on it. If it came from heterosexual communities as a disparaging put-down for those who were not straight, I think it falls into the same pattern of self-oppression. Since I don't know where it came from, I tend to default towards the position that it is not my term to use and I avoid it when talking about sexuality.

In general, I don't think it's possible to reclaim a word you never owned.

CLUB PISCOPO (DJP), Tuesday, 9 August 2011 21:54 (fourteen years ago)

What about "geek"

mh, Tuesday, 9 August 2011 22:02 (fourteen years ago)

Hmmm. I guess I shouldn't have presupposed that you would be familiar with the (fairly complicated) history and politics of the word "queer". But let wikipedia tell it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queer

Fwiw, I identify as Queer (and not as gay) myself.

dutty whiney (The Reverend), Tuesday, 9 August 2011 22:03 (fourteen years ago)

or, god forbid I pull Jersey Shore out of my hat, "guido"

mh, Tuesday, 9 August 2011 22:03 (fourteen years ago)

In general, I don't think it's possible to reclaim a word you never owned.

yeah but language is fluid, that's what's dope about it

big triffid in my backyard (Edward III), Tuesday, 9 August 2011 22:04 (fourteen years ago)

It's been interesting in the last few months because a friend who is very feminist and works with pro-woman groups has been noticeably put off by the "slut walk" phenomenon. It's another reclaimed thing, right?

mh, Tuesday, 9 August 2011 22:05 (fourteen years ago)

re. geeks, no one was ever denied their basic human rights because they got into an argument on the internet about whether or not greedo or han shot first.

as far as i know.

king of torts (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Tuesday, 9 August 2011 22:06 (fourteen years ago)

Give it time.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 9 August 2011 22:07 (fourteen years ago)

Kids certainly got the shit kicked out of them while called geeks or nerds as kids

mh, Tuesday, 9 August 2011 22:08 (fourteen years ago)

but then along came the internet to show that nerds were actually meaner and more misogynistic than the jocks that beat them up
