guys fyi when you play a festival the "shuttle" to & from the airport is usually staffed & driven by volunteers who are busting ass to get you to & from your stage/hotel/etc. I once shared a European airport shuttle with an artist in my rough wheelhouse, a really talented cat, who senselessly berated the driver all the way and then explained to me that "you have to talk them like this" when he saw mrs. aero and me staring disbelievingly at his bullshit.

if you are getting paid stupid money to play a festival and you can't be cool the shuttle driver, then you're not only an asshole, you're the worst kind of fuckin' asshole their is. if you're a grownup romanticizing teen life and you think it's a total riot that some teenagers mistreated a volunteer, then guess what, you're a worthless fuckin' asshole, too. feel free to volunteer to drive the shuttle at some of these festivals, though - I'm sure Odd Future will take one look at you and say, hey, he looks like a way cool dude, I won't be a total dick to him!

on the one hand I dug that jam I have to say but lol whiney if you think continental europe is paradise...lollllllll

btw I returned from that show to my one-bedroom rental in Iowa, $275 a month, irretrievably infested by mice & with pipes that froze reliably each January & a shower with a permanent coating of ice on its floor from December to April, a house which was finally & mercifully purchased by the city specifically so that they could raze it to the ground rather than have it blotting the landscape of their town, whose population was 775 then & is probably 773 now. I think I paid two months' rent off what I brought home, and yet I did not find it necesarry to be a dick to the shuttle driver

xps areo (i guess?) but like wouldn't it be weirder if they had been really polite & respectful, imagine i should be outraged that somewhere in the world a volunteer was treated rudely but i kind of like how in character this whole scene is, incl steve albini sitting there gasping for breath. like the plaxico post somewhere in here about how theyre horrible little douchebags or like an evil sibling or sumfn. also obviously this is just one snapshot from a neverending wildfire spray of the same behaviour every day of their lives on tour

like i know ur into long righteous posts & damning lambaste both srs and in jest but i feel my eyes glaze over & get a whiff of my mother telling me about some excruciating wrong she suffered in line at an organic grocery store. maybe this is what strongo meant when he said everyone under 30 should be banned from ilx

also what is repulsive about the albini blog post is his use of the word nigger (which they obv werent saying) in place of nigga (which they obv were) suggests a more hateful tone than what is an otherwise just v v bitter screed

back in a .gif ;) (flopson), Tuesday, 9 August 2011 18:41 (fourteen years ago)

the distinction between "nigga" and "nigger" is one of the dumbest, most backwards linguistic developments of the 20th century and Albini is absolutely correct to ignore it

yeah man I can't get down with "it's ok to be a choad to people who're giving of their own time* as long as you're 'in character'" - there's also something kinda sad about grown people romanticizing this shit? like, there are plenty of successful young ppl milkin the bratty/dangerous angle who if you meet 'em in real life are just pussycats, they'll tell you "I'll fucking put you on blast if you tell people I was nice to you" but it's a thing, the "these fun-ass teenagers!" schtick some ppl OTT work seems sorta pinin' for the fjords type shit

*or even if they're getting paid: to people who're driving you from one place to another & helping you get your work done

xp DJP as a fretful white liberal I wanna say thank you for saying that because I have wondered a lot whether the purported distinction is, y'know, bullshit

pathos of the unwarranted encore (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Tuesday, 9 August 2011 18:48 (fourteen years ago)

I don't really think albini's usage comes across as "gross"

swaguirre, the wrath of basedgod (bernard snowy), Tuesday, 9 August 2011 18:53 (fourteen years ago)

idk he did seem to be getting off on using the n-word an excessive amount of times

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 9 August 2011 18:53 (fourteen years ago)

Last year all the kids I worked with called everyone (myself included - yes I realize how funny this is) "my nigga". One day I asked two of them why this was OK (tyring to spark some ~meaningful discussions~) and they were honestly SHOCKED to find out that anyone would think they were saying "nigger" since it was so obviously different. When I asked how, they explained that it was written "nikka" so not the same at all and looked at me like I was totally nuts to think otherwise.

forks:

in general, I stand with Bill Cosby

I also listen to hip-hop (*shrug* hi dere contradictions that make up this wacky thing we call "life")

I ultimately think co-opting slurs into your self-identity are damaging and hurtful; there is a difference between claiming your right to control your reaction to hateful verbiage to reduce its power against you and referring to yourself via hateful verbiage, thereby reinforcing and cementing the negative stereotypes about your people. It is the epitome of slave mentality to wear a word used to strip your forbears of their basic human rights as a badge of honor and any narrative/justification that feeds into that is oppression from either a position of ignorance or privilege.

But, I really like NWA.

Also anyone treating my views on this as BLACK GOSPEL should really step back for a second; this is my raised-in-white-America-and-reminded-every-nanosecond-of-my-life-as-a-result opinion and should be treated as such.

Eh, it may be dumb and backwards, but it's there. Like my reaction if a white person says "nigga" is kinda "Stay in your lane, mane" (#djquikvoice) whereas if a white person says "nigger" my reaction is more like "YOU. FUCKING DIE. RIGHT NOW." And if a black person says "nigga" I'm like "Eh, whatever", but if a black person says "nigger" I'm like "Whoa, shit just got serious".

I mean I'm not super-eager to wade into this debate but... in a way I kind of dig the shock/estrangement effect that he creates in the Sentence In Question (I just saw the one quoted bit, still haven't looked at the original text) by lifting the profanities out of quotation marks and turning them into actions, or predicates of a subject—which is of course what they are, that's the whole point of profanity right? yr not just saying a word, yr performing a ~transgressive act~...

(yes I know that the n-word can be, and often is, used in a way that has very little 'profane' about it in this sense; but forgive me if I'm not exactly willing to give OF the benefit of the doubt here)

swaguirre, the wrath of basedgod (bernard snowy), Tuesday, 9 August 2011 18:59 (fourteen years ago)

also I should point out that in general I am kind of an old lady about swearing in public, prone to quietly reprimanding or (more often) burying my head in my hands when my friends can't avoid the temptation to drop a million f-bombs within earshot of some little league baseball team at the pizza place or w/e
