Saw him years ago in Kansas City, all alone, local openers. One of the most memorable shows I've ever been to.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 4 August 2011 16:47 (fourteen years ago)

saw him open for om with a solo set and shitheads talked over it all. could barely hear the guy. :-/

original bgm, Thursday, 4 August 2011 16:48 (fourteen years ago)

same night - some aggro guy also slammed into this peaceful, stoned longhair that was grooving to om and sent him flying. there was no pit, they guy basically just charged right into him. people suck.

original bgm, Thursday, 4 August 2011 16:51 (fourteen years ago)

Where do you live? I went to a sold out OM show and everyone waited patiently throughout a 40 minute solo drone set from Lichens.

Badmotorfinger Debate Club (MFB), Thursday, 4 August 2011 16:53 (fourteen years ago)

lol, brooklyn

original bgm, Thursday, 4 August 2011 17:14 (fourteen years ago)

Huh that's interesting I missed that last tour (Six Organs/OM) I think that show was at Europa? I live in BK too now, but the show I was referring to was in SF. Maybe the old cliche is true that Bay Area audiences are just more stoned and docile. I have no compunction about telling people to shut the fuck up at shows.

Badmotorfinger Debate Club (MFB), Thursday, 4 August 2011 17:16 (fourteen years ago)

dunno, i mean i can see people going to a six organs show maybe expecting a more loud, psych-y blowout thing, if they weren't very familiar with the records. since he plays w/ loud psych-y blowout bands like rangda and comets on fire...

tylerw, Thursday, 4 August 2011 17:20 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, it was the europa show. not my fave venue for sure.

I guess I saw lichens there too but I honestly don't remember how that went down. but the whole place was talking over the six organs set, wasn't just a couple folks. v. annoying. aggro mosher was the icing on the cake.

x-post

original bgm, Thursday, 4 August 2011 17:25 (fourteen years ago)

and I don't really think a quiet set is any reason to talk over someone. if anything, it's much worse! and lots of the six organs material is very mellow.

three weeks pass...

And in spinoff news:

200 Years
"S/T"
LP/CD
November 8th, 2011

Drag City is happy to announce the release of 200 Years!! 200 Years is none other than those straw dogs of skull counting (and flowers!), Ben “Six Organs of Admittance” Chasny and Elisa “Magic Markers” Ambrogio.

The PR goes on from there but I'll be honest, I gotta spare ya.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 19 September 2011 19:35 (fourteen years ago)

Excellent news!

interested to see what this'll sound like

Chris S, Monday, 19 September 2011 20:25 (fourteen years ago)

first listen sounded a little underwhelming -- nice but not mindblowing? I'll have to dig in a little further, it might be a grower.

more side projecting -- hadn't even heard of this til now: http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/16437-broda/
sample sounds pretty groovy, different stuff for Chasny.

scott seward, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 14:54 (fourteen years ago)

the 200 Years album is pretty, quiet, and a bit insubstantial—but some good tunes on there. best when it's deliberately chasny-esque and not just "acoustic magik markers" mode. i wrote about it here.

ilxor, Sunday, 8 April 2012 02:42 (fourteen years ago)

cannot fuckin wait for new Rangda and Six Organs records, btw....

Ben has returned to rock! Well he never left but anyway:

ANNOUNCING THE ELECTRIC, FULL BAND-SIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE EXPERIENCE; NEW ALBUM, ASCENT, OUT AUGUST 21ST ON DRAG CITY
LISTEN TO SIX ORGAN'S "WASWASA" NOW

six organs

Six Organs of Admittance as an electric entity is not without precedent. Ben Chasny regularly performs with a full, electric band, often cascades an electric guitar solo in the middle of an acoustic jam, and has recorded entire sides of electric drone. This element goes all the way back to 2002, when a short-lived rock version of Six Organs (with the members of Comets on Fire) toured the West Coast and etched a few demos to tape before moving on. Ten years later, with the idea to record new songs as a full rock band firmly entrenched in his mind, Chasny warped over to Tim Green's Louder Studios with members of Comets as his backing band. He emerged with Ascent, the rollicking realization of the Six Organs full band experience.

No, these aren't those dusty old 2002 moments with the dust blown off. We live today, and so does Six Organs of Admittance! To manipulate the past would change the world forever. Instead, the time line for Ascent occurs on our identical Earth, on the other side of the sun, telescoping the strength and power of that moment in 2002 and it's electri-Six-O after-affects by viewing it through the mind's opera-glass, in the present. From the opening red storm of "Waswasa" to the sentinel strength of "Even If You Knew" and the sensual lilt of "Visions (From Io)," the sound of this Six Organs is that of full-tilt rock band. The fun and fury of electric Six Organs of Admittance is evidenced in every molten groove.

Ascent will reach this Earth via Drag City Records come August 21st.

Yeah, high hopes for this. Gonna listen to "Waswasa" right now. Sure hope the Howlin' Rain ethos is not too present.

!

Stoked. New Rangda and new Six Organs this year? Combine that with the Blues Control record and I think it may be a Drag City kind of fall.

combo of the new one and the new rangda is basically psych guitar heaven.

8/21 here i come

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Monday, 13 August 2012 17:51 (thirteen years ago)

at least a few of the same song titles -- 1000 Birds and Even if You Knew? Right? Maybe that was on the Rangda thread.

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Monday, 13 August 2012 17:53 (thirteen years ago)

these are new recordings -- those electric six organs things were from way back, 2004-ish? but there is some crossover w/ songs from those sessions.

tylerw, Monday, 13 August 2012 17:55 (thirteen years ago)

oh ok that's good news! those recordings kinda suck and i keep wanting them to be LOUDER

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Monday, 13 August 2012 17:58 (thirteen years ago)

yes, these are more hi-fi!

tylerw, Monday, 13 August 2012 17:59 (thirteen years ago)

I was surprised when I noticed that Thurston Moore's new band Chelsea LIght Moving consisted of the 2 guys who made up the 3 piece electric 6 Organs that toured in 2006 plus the violinist who'd toured with the acoustic TM band.
I liked that electric 6OoA and hoped i'd get hold of more than the Chapel Hill set that circulated.

But great that the new 6OoA is a renamed Comets of Fire on record at least.

Stevolende, Monday, 13 August 2012 19:12 (thirteen years ago)

Think Thurston kinda poached the band, though not in a dickish way.

grandavis, Monday, 13 August 2012 20:01 (thirteen years ago)

There was about a 5 year gap anyway wasn't there. Think Chasny was playing with his fiancee for a couple of years.
& Maloney was more of a Sunburneder wasn't he? Though he'd apparently moved to Leeds UK by 2006.
Haven't heard much on the Sunburned front recently are they still active?

& Keith Wood's been doing several things in the interim hasn't he?

Stevolende, Tuesday, 14 August 2012 12:34 (thirteen years ago)

I listened to those electric Six Organs tracks last night and I forgot how much 1000 Birds sounds like Cowgirl in the Sand -- it's mostly just the opening part, but the similarity is unmistakeable.

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 13:06 (thirteen years ago)

can't stop playing the new one! the accompanying seven-inch is ace too!

tylerw, Thursday, 23 August 2012 22:20 (thirteen years ago)

i got it but it's sitting here in my bag til i get home from a work meeting! i wonder if mine came with a 7"?! the only sticker on the outside informs me that i should play it loudly.

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Thursday, 23 August 2012 22:30 (thirteen years ago)

Is the 7" more songs with the full band?

grandavis, Thursday, 23 August 2012 22:31 (thirteen years ago)

yes -- 2 instrumentals
xp oh i don't think it's actually included w/ the LP -- just meant "accompanying" as in "from the same sessions."

tylerw, Thursday, 23 August 2012 22:32 (thirteen years ago)

Ahh, good to know on both fronts. Thanks.

grandavis, Thursday, 23 August 2012 22:38 (thirteen years ago)

ok this thousand birds sounds a lot different than the other one! it's a lot tighter, a little faster, and the beginning doesn't sound like "cowgirl in the sand" at all. i still like it though!
was disappointed that there were no downloads
i thought drag city did that?

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Friday, 24 August 2012 03:39 (thirteen years ago)

Nah, they don't at all. Pretty frustrating. I think I need to put a Drag City order together.
My birthday is coming up!

Trip Maker, Friday, 24 August 2012 04:24 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, seems like they don't do the "download coupon with vinyl" thing just to be ornery.

tylerw, Friday, 24 August 2012 14:41 (thirteen years ago)

it is frustrating, esp since i have been purchasing their wares for like 20 years. maybe they should get a lifetime loyal customer download card or something. on the other hand, birthdays make a good excuse for purchases of all kinds :)

anyway i listened to this last night and it's great. the little dot matrix printer paper insert/lyric sheet thing is kinda lol.

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Friday, 24 August 2012 14:49 (thirteen years ago)

jamming "One Thousand Birds" on my radio show right now, fresh out of the shrinkwrap
