Here's mine
20. Crazy YouI know it goes against percieved wisdom but I adore the first album...pure anadulterated Prince...the sound of someone being let loose in the candy store...this is just lovely19. Leaving For New YorkOnly discovered this fairly recently...a home demo from '76...Prince on the piano playing his little heart out...again it has essence of Prince all over it18. Future Baby MamaThe only track I chose post 1987...think cos it contains that quirky major/minor Prince sequence and cos it sounds like something from 87!!17. In LoveFirst proper track on first album...a bit corny I know but still brill16. TambourineWeird funk groove...great drumming...off the hook vocals...Prince in a nutshell15. BambiPrince goes metal and decides to turn a lesbian straight...now that's the kinda therapy I'm talkin about!!14. Private JoyPure Minneapolis pop/funk...impossible not to shake your booty to this13. Soft And WetFirst single I believe...love the story about Prince telling Warners that Maurice White would not be producing his album...He would!!12. 17 DaysPrince's b-sides trumped most other artists entire catalogues...this is just extraordinary...11. When You Were MineOne of Prince's purist pop moments...but with so much soul10 .Raspberry BeretWonder what the Warner execs thought when they heard ATWIAD...they must of been a lot of relief in the room when they this9. Little Red CorvetteSexy, sly and funky this track never gets tired...a track everyone can agree is genius8. When Doves CryHeard this on the radio recently for the first time in ages and it slayed me like the first time I heard it...immense7. I Wanna Be Your LoverMichael had Don't Stop...Prince had this...Real men sing in Falsetto...if you don't dance to this you don't dance...6. 1999I remember hearing this for the first time as an 11 year old kid...Probably the most seminal musical moment ofmy life...things would never be the same again5.KissCan't think of many greater 3 minutes in pop than this...pure perfection4. UptownBlack,White,Puerto Rican everyone just a-freakin...this is tight as fuck3. Something In The Water(Does Not Compute)Dark and Weird as you like...Prince as Norman Bates...They Don't make em like this no more2. The Ballad Of Dorothy ParkerCan't think of another artist that could produce something as fucked up as this...thank god for Prince..1. Condition Of The HeartThe track that defines the word Fey...there are'nt the words to describe my love for this...the most gorgeous sublime track ever recorded...

Guess I'm not that hardcore of a Prince freak - my ballot was mostly hits or well-known album tracks. I do have almost all of his albums, but I probably listen to The Hits/The B-Sides more than any of them 'cept maybe Dirty Mind. I think it does more to establish his genius and listens better than any of his regular studio albums. Even after about a decade as a fan, I'm still getting my head around Sign of the Times though several of its tracks made my ballot. That might actually have something to do with the fact that's it's one of the worst-mastered CDs I've ever heard. Should probably just spring for the vinyl, but I need to get a record player first.
My picks:
1) Adore2) Head3) 19994) The Beautiful Ones5) U Got the Look6) 777-9311 (The Time)7) The Most Beautiful Girl In The World (Album version)8) Controversy9) When U Were Mine10) Dirty Mind11) Kiss12) I Wanna Be Your Lover13) New Position14) When Doves Cry15) Let's Go Crazy16) Pop Life17) Little Red Corvette18) The Ballad of Dorothy Parker19) It20) Uptown
Probably would have swapped "Starfish & Coffee" for "Ballad of Dorothy Parker" on second thought, and was going back and forth about "DMSR". Might not have even voted for "When You Were Mine" at all if I coulda known it would top our poll - I mean it's great, but it's not that great. Oh well - such surprises are what these polls are for.

interesting excerpt from a new book about Prince: http://blog.discmakers.com/2011/06/prince-before-the-revolution/
anyone read it? i've already ready Dance Music Sex Romance, which is great and fairly comprehensive, but i don't know if there's anything stopping me from reading 2 books about Prince.

Knee-jerking in the laziest and least interesting way possible from what I can see. Prince is pretty much back-to-front indie credible from what I can see.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 3 August 2011 10:18 (fourteen years ago)
Parade got stiffed. Love every song on that record.
When You Were Mine is great and all but it feels more like a cool new-wave one-off than essence-of-Prince. An odd number one. Fun poll though.

i'll say it again...cos he hasn't released a truly decent album in nearly 25 years he really is in danger of being forgotten as possibly the greatest musician of the last fifty years...that 78-88 period is unbelevable...as well as all the singles, albums and b sides there's all the stuff that was unrealeased and given away to other artists...I still cant get my head round how he did it and toured excessively at the same time and made films and slept ate and...well maybe he didnt do a poo for 15 years...thats maybe why he got a little kranky...
