so i'm always curious with these polls; any non fans/Prince-curious people out there discovered any tracks they really love so far?
― I'm A Genius, Too! (Jamie_ATP)
yeah, been a fan for years but never really went deep into his/their catalog before and this has made me begin with that and i've been LOVING every damn minute. u got the look & lady cab driver are the only ones i voted for that made the list so far. guess i can rule out "sister" (my no. 1 or 2 iirc) placing since "when you were mine" hasn't surfaced yet, eh
― Marquis de Sade (outdoor_miner), Monday, 1 August 2011 23:57 (fourteen years ago)
y'know what? i concede that i simply don't get Dirty Mind as an album like other people do, but i really really don't think "Dirty Mind" is a great song, really not top 20 material. my only consolation is that "Controversy" is destined for the top 10.
― some dude, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 00:26 (fourteen years ago)
I enjoy it as an album track: that slow, steady synth throb.
― The Edge of Gloryhole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 00:27 (fourteen years ago)
it's got a couple of my favorite songs he ever wrote. it's also got some filler vamps. but even the filler's got an energy to it that i love.
― king of torts (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 00:31 (fourteen years ago)
plus it's fucking filthy.
― king of torts (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 00:32 (fourteen years ago)
Dirty Mind was my #2. There is nothing I don't love about that song.
― kornrulez6969, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 01:34 (fourteen years ago)
there's nothing I love about that song that I don't love about "Controversy" more
― some dude, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 01:38 (fourteen years ago)
I think loving one and not the other is a little odd. Sometimes I want to hear one more than other, but I agree with Soto that "Dirty Mind" has a pretty great, warm, throbbing pulse.
― third-generation stripper (Eric H.), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 02:33 (fourteen years ago)
"Controversy" is so present and so hooky, "Dirty Mind" is a little slip of a song by comparison
― some dude, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 02:36 (fourteen years ago)
"Dirty Mind" is a little more "Minneapolis sound" too, I think, so I'm biased.
― third-generation stripper (Eric H.), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 02:38 (fourteen years ago)
I also admire how Matt Fink plays with the speed at which he plays the synth hook.
― livin in my own private Biden hole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 02:39 (fourteen years ago)
Dirty Mind was one of my top votes. that throbbing beat plus those synths, and the bridge....all make that classic. great tune.
― Neanderthal, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 02:45 (fourteen years ago)
the chord progressions are awesome too
"controversy" > "dirty mind"
dirty mind > controversy
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 2 August 2011 02:47 (fourteen years ago)
controversy is one of the best songs
― blapplebees (crüt), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 02:48 (fourteen years ago)
controversy was in my top 20. Dirty Mind was actually my #1, on re-checking...
― Neanderthal, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 02:49 (fourteen years ago)
"controversy" is way way better than "dirty mind" -- "dirty mind" is hella minor imo
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 2 August 2011 02:49 (fourteen years ago)
in my daddy's car....it's YOU I really wanna drive!
not minor! very major!
― Rasta held after sex assault on goat (The Brainwasher), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 02:50 (fourteen years ago)
Brainwasher otm

if that line is what makes it major, it became minor after "Little Red Corvette"
― some dude, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 02:52 (fourteen years ago)
"controversy" is so good that it can even overcome "people call me rude / i wish we all were nude"
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 2 August 2011 02:53 (fourteen years ago)
it's so perfect. i feel really terrible about cutting it from my ballot but consoled that it's a lock for top 10.
― some dude, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 02:54 (fourteen years ago)
i mean I do agree that "controversy" > "dirty mind" but not by much
― Rasta held after sex assault on goat (The Brainwasher), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 02:54 (fourteen years ago)
the 12'' version of Controversy when he recites John 3:16 is like so next level
can a mod change the title to "If Tracks R Good" etc.?
― mookieproof, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 02:55 (fourteen years ago)
"controversy" the song is very definitely > "dirty mind" the song
but dm the album is like two sweet wistful larks and then six tracks of manic fuck music, i.e. amazing
― king of torts (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 02:55 (fourteen years ago)
the chorus of "Controversy" >>>>>>>>>> all of "Dirty Mind"
― livin in my own private Biden hole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 02:56 (fourteen years ago)
the chorus of "Controversy" >>>>>>>>>> all of Dirty Mind
― some dude, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 02:57 (fourteen years ago)
ok you went too far
― Rasta held after sex assault on goat (The Brainwasher), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 02:58 (fourteen years ago)
the synth coda on "controversy" >>>>>> most of recorded music
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 2 August 2011 02:58 (fourteen years ago)
that got out of control fast
like most of Dirty Mind's sex talk does
― livin in my own private Biden hole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 02:59 (fourteen years ago)
the synth line on "Controversy" is closer to Bernie Worrell's playing; is that why Eric Weisbard claims that it's Prince first "wholly successful" funk foray?
― livin in my own private Biden hole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 03:00 (fourteen years ago)
"controversy", though amazing, is not even the best song on 'controversy', also it would not be the best song on 'dirty mind'
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 2 August 2011 03:00 (fourteen years ago)
he just wants to perform oral sex on you until you have a coronary, i don't understand what's so over the top about that
― king of torts (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 03:00 (fourteen years ago)
i'm just not into demos-turned-album, i guess -- i get annoyed with people who say Nebraska is Springsteen's best too
― some dude, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 03:01 (fourteen years ago)
maybe i would know what was so filthy and great about Dirty Mind if the lyrics were remotely as audible as they are on pretty much every other Prince album
― some dude, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 03:03 (fourteen years ago)
basically he deflowers a girl in her father's car, has an unsatisfying threesome, performs oral on a recently wed nubile, and fucks his imaginary sister
― king of torts (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 03:04 (fourteen years ago)
standard prince stuff, really
then he has a party!
― livin in my own private Biden hole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 03:06 (fourteen years ago)
And gets asked if he's gay somewhere along Lagoon Avenue.
― third-generation stripper (Eric H.), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 03:11 (fourteen years ago)
And contemplates changing the sheets.
any non fans/Prince-curious people out there discovered any tracks they really love so far?
I didn't have the B-sides disc from Hits until this poll so 17 Days, She's Always in My Hair and Erotic City are the big revelations from this poll.

aw man
― CLUB PISCOPO (DJP), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 13:19 (fourteen years ago)
was really hoping this would be #1 given how the votes had played out
― CLUB PISCOPO (DJP), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 13:20 (fourteen years ago)
Sorry but wasn't 'Kiss' number 10?...
― The Pastiche Liberation Front (sonnyboy), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 13:23 (fourteen years ago)
the Mario Paint version of "Kiss" was not #10, no
― CLUB PISCOPO (DJP), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 13:26 (fourteen years ago)
...which is a travesty to say the least
― Neanderthal, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 13:27 (fourteen years ago)
Ha ha see what you did there...
