Yeah, I would've never pegged "Alphabet St." landing above "If I Was Your Girlfriend."
― third-generation stripper (Eric H.), Monday, 1 August 2011 17:58 (fourteen years ago)
Or "I Would Die 4 U" (!!)
But it is the most fun!

never really rated U Got the Look, Pop Life also seems a bit high imho
― Richard Nixon's Field of Warmth (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 1 August 2011 18:16 (fourteen years ago)
Glad "Pop Life" is as high as it is. Feel it's, if anything, underrated by Prince fans.
― third-generation stripper (Eric H.), Monday, 1 August 2011 18:19 (fourteen years ago)
When You Were Mine better be in the top ten, you freaks
― zappi, Monday, 1 August 2011 18:20 (fourteen years ago)
V happy to see the Dorothy Parker love. My #1.

man dont you give me any more shit for my dabney coleman revelation now
i think the 12-inch mix of "raspberry beret" would have been my no. 1 if i'd remembered to vote
― king of torts (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Monday, 1 August 2011 18:24 (fourteen years ago)
I know this is self-evident, but looking at this and the Beatles poll as they relate to my own ballots, they reinforce for me the idea that the more you love an artist's work, the less you'll be in line with everyone else's perception of that work. I love the Beatles, and my ballot wasn't even close to the final results; I'm a casual Prince fan, and my ballot is very much in line with the final results.
― clemenza, Monday, 1 August 2011 18:26 (fourteen years ago)
I'm not crazy about "Alphabet Street" but it's never exactly set radio programmers on fire, which means it's basically an underrated Prince single.
― The Edge of Gloryhole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 1 August 2011 18:27 (fourteen years ago)
I remember taping the Alphabet St video so that I could freeze frame it for hidden messages
― Richard Nixon's Field of Warmth (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 1 August 2011 18:32 (fourteen years ago)
"I'm sorry about the Black Album" iirc
lol strongo U Got the Look is fine, I don't think it's bad I just don't think it's better than, say, Let's Go Crazy or 1999 or Uptown or pretty much half the things that beat it out, really
― Richard Nixon's Field of Warmth (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 1 August 2011 18:34 (fourteen years ago)
hoping at least one Tony M cut makes the top ten
― Ismael Klata, Monday, 1 August 2011 18:47 (fourteen years ago)
the other 5 songs from purple rain + ...
― preschoolin' life (BradNelson), Monday, 1 August 2011 18:52 (fourteen years ago)
Prediction: #4 will be "The Greatest Romance Ever Sold."
― The Edge of Gloryhole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 1 August 2011 18:53 (fourteen years ago)
man if "diamonds and pearls" shows up here i'm gonna plotz
― king of torts (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Monday, 1 August 2011 18:53 (fourteen years ago)
"Alphabet St." is his worst '80s single, it makes me wanna spit to think of the songs it placed above
― some dude, Monday, 1 August 2011 21:33 (fourteen years ago)
over the weekend i tried to draw up my prediction of the top 20 -- got everything so far except "Dorothy Parker," but now i only feel really confident about 8 of the top 10 and really am not sure at all what the other 2 will be
― some dude, Monday, 1 August 2011 21:34 (fourteen years ago)
if "purple rain" isn't #1 can we just pretend like the poll didn't happen
― J0rdan S., Monday, 1 August 2011 21:36 (fourteen years ago)
uh
28. Purple Rain (from Purple Rain, 1984) - 201 points, 8 votes

"Purple Rain" is never anybody's #1

damn
― J0rdan S., Monday, 1 August 2011 21:47 (fourteen years ago)
"do me, baby" has to be in the top ten right
right
― preschoolin' life (BradNelson), Monday, 1 August 2011 21:52 (fourteen years ago)
I've decided that you can pinpoint Prince's decline by the changes in his facial hair - once he got rid of the mustach/goatee combo, things started to go downhill. clean-shaven Prince is a terrible look imho
― Richard Nixon's Field of Warmth (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 1 August 2011 21:53 (fourteen years ago)
it's not like the 5 o'clock shadow era in the early '90s was better than the era with less facial hair that preceded it
― some dude, Monday, 1 August 2011 21:54 (fourteen years ago)
I want you all to play very close attention to his costume and hair on Rave U2 the Fantastic's cover. "Fatigues" is right.
― The Edge of Gloryhole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 1 August 2011 21:56 (fourteen years ago)

so there's like no chance of "sexy dancer" making the top 10 is there

i prob should've voted

my number 1 'u got the look' vote wasn't wasted then i suppose, nearly top 10 though. then again, i've heard '17 days' now.
― second only to popcorn (or something), Monday, 1 August 2011 23:03 (fourteen years ago)
so i'm always curious with these polls; any non fans/Prince-curious people out there discovered any tracks they really love so far?
― I'm A Genius, Too! (Jamie_ATP), Friday, July 29, 2011 8:26 PM (3 days ago)
loving the whole thing. Learning a lot. Thanks!

― I'm A Genius, Too! (Jamie_ATP)
yeah, been a fan for years but never really went deep into his/their catalog before and this has made me begin with that and i've been LOVING every damn minute. u got the look & lady cab driver are the only ones i voted for that made the list so far. guess i can rule out "sister" (my no. 1 or 2 iirc) placing since "when you were mine" hasn't surfaced yet, eh
― Marquis de Sade (outdoor_miner), Monday, 1 August 2011 23:57 (fourteen years ago)
y'know what? i concede that i simply don't get Dirty Mind as an album like other people do, but i really really don't think "Dirty Mind" is a great song, really not top 20 material. my only consolation is that "Controversy" is destined for the top 10.
― some dude, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 00:26 (fourteen years ago)
I enjoy it as an album track: that slow, steady synth throb.
― The Edge of Gloryhole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 00:27 (fourteen years ago)
it's got a couple of my favorite songs he ever wrote. it's also got some filler vamps. but even the filler's got an energy to it that i love.
― king of torts (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 00:31 (fourteen years ago)
plus it's fucking filthy.
― king of torts (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 00:32 (fourteen years ago)
Dirty Mind was my #2. There is nothing I don't love about that song.
― kornrulez6969, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 01:34 (fourteen years ago)
there's nothing I love about that song that I don't love about "Controversy" more
― some dude, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 01:38 (fourteen years ago)
I think loving one and not the other is a little odd. Sometimes I want to hear one more than other, but I agree with Soto that "Dirty Mind" has a pretty great, warm, throbbing pulse.
― third-generation stripper (Eric H.), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 02:33 (fourteen years ago)
"Controversy" is so present and so hooky, "Dirty Mind" is a little slip of a song by comparison
― some dude, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 02:36 (fourteen years ago)
"Dirty Mind" is a little more "Minneapolis sound" too, I think, so I'm biased.
