That's the right Almunia, I was surprised by the Lex love as well, maybe it's the lack of vocals.

I guess if it's, like, "Attack ships on fire off the Balearic Nebula..." style spacerock, it would belong on this thread?

(They also managed to work in I Can't Help It by Jacko and Enjoy The Silence and Stop Baijon and Nocturne by Kate Bush and Chime by Orbital and a load of awesome cosmic disco stuff I didn't know, it was probably the best DJ set I've ever seen. I'll shut up about it now.)

Lex, I've found the album New Moon by Almunia on Spotify, which tracks do you recommend?
― Aphex Twin … in my vagina? (Karen D. Tregaskin),
My favourite tracks from the album are probably Electric Blues and Travel although this one's lovely too:

Bubble Club have been doing some really nice stuff in this vein as well - most of it's much slower Balearic stuff but this is pretty dancefloor-oriented:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ahu2aaxlzOg
The original is the one I'm really thinking of but that's not on Youtube.
― Matt DC, Friday, 29 July 2011 11:49 (thirteen years ago) link
OMG NIPPLE DANGER
totally off-topic, but I've never understood why the nipple is always the censored part - I'm a man but I have them too, I know what they look like. It's the curve that I find more offensive and gratuitous than the nipple. See also: covering the gap when you can already see most of the ass.

all of it really - "new moon" was the single that grabbed me, the vocal version of "travel" on the album and "until she comes" are really nice exampls of their ability to write ~songs~ as well

It's that ~shimmery~ wibbly wub noise that really gets me. I mean, this is years and years pre-Aeroplane, but it's the main synth sound in this track (also plus girly vocals and handclaps) that makes my ears sit up and say boy howdy:

OK, the beautiful male falsetto vocals just kicked in on the roberto rodriguez track, with swishy synth sounds and yup, that's going on the playlist, extra bonus points for superfluous house piano chucked in on top, YESSSSS so happy.

(side note: basically, if someone would do a swishy Aeroplane style remix of Azari & III's Manic World, that would be my favourite thing in the world ever, but it's so not gonna happen, that would be a mutant.)

I was all "well, that's a bit shit..." but then there was a break and the drums kicked in and OH MY LORD - that should really just start about 3 minutes in, right, or is that a different song at the beginning?

It's an intro melody that's actually part of a Holy Ghost! song. Wolfram really milks it on the album, anyway.

When I was in France a few weeks ago I went with some friends who are mostly "indie" fans to a nightclub that was playing stuff that was kinda like this thread, but perhaps less shiny and more beardo, and "Beam Me Up" had them cheering and singing along despite none of them knowing it. That kind of thing makes me happy, and since then I've been able to convert them a bit towards this stuff with some mixtapes etc, so for that reason alone I have too much love for "Beam Me Up".
Jacques Renault is doing a lot of good work with his remixes just now - this is a current favourite, it sounds so light and dreamy that it seems almost suspended in mid-air.

The French Express label (Perseus, Chris Malinchek, Jonas Rathsman, Moon Boots) has been the leading light of this stuff for a year now. Moon Boot's "Sugar" from earlier in the year is more or less a remix/edit of Janet's "If", and its still flawless.

The blog The Last Gas Station does decent work covering the sub-genre. Some pointers: The Magician's Magic Tape set lists (they're all on La.Ga.Sta), Surf Ambassador Hendo's setlists, every thing on the French Express label, most Kitsuné label compilations, and half of Youtube user Majestic Casual's uploads.
Of current note, French Express, just mentioned above, now have a UK #2 with Chris Malinchak's "So Good to Me". And early stalwarts Classixx finally brought out their debut album Hanging Gardens.
Tons of freebies on soundcloud from the standout names like Plastic Plates, Perseus, Gigamesh, Moon Boots, Villa, Moonlight Matters, Breakbot, Yuksek, Goldroom, Flight Facilities etc.

Vito's only doing one or two a year now; I'm sure I listen to them but they don't make any impact. Haven't listened to a Magic Tape since before I Dont Know What To Do came out.
Listened to (the song) We Can't Fly yesterday though, and it still holds up. Having not heard the album, I'm happy to think of the song as a culmination of the Aeroplane project
