'84... was he even using a live drummer at that point? I'd guess they used the actual Linn Drum tracks, with whatever drummer he had playing fills/percussion on top? I dunno though

^^^^^^^ one of mine

The Edge of Gloryhole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 21:47 (fourteen years ago)

think Prince has the opposite problem nowadays, actually - lesser songs that might actually benefit from a little production gimmickry.

Exactly my problem with Musicology and 3121. They sound -- too dry? crumbly? Luckily he's still singing like an MF.

He rectified this on Planet Earth, on which "Chelsea Rodgers" and "Lion of Judea" gave me exactly what I wanted from latter-day Prince. Too bad the rest of the album sucked.

The Edge of Gloryhole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 21:49 (fourteen years ago)

lol amazing Sign O' The Times pic up there

42. The Most Beautiful Girl In The World

guess I was wrong about no shitty songs showing up

No Broehner (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 22:10 (fourteen years ago)

:P

I'm one of its seven votes.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 27 July 2011 22:11 (fourteen years ago)

what is there to like about this song? idgi

No Broehner (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 22:12 (fourteen years ago)

It's just light and sweet with a solid melody.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 27 July 2011 22:13 (fourteen years ago)

It's totally classic.

I'm A Genius, Too! (Jamie_ATP), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 22:21 (fourteen years ago)

OMG how can you hate The Most Beautiful Girl in the World? that melody...as one critic once quoted, it's like a smoother 90's Al Green. plus I love him doing that little riff in his low voice at the end.

this was the first track I voted to place!

Neanderthal, Wednesday, 27 July 2011 22:40 (fourteen years ago)

Three of mine in that first ten: Black Sweat, Money Don't Matter 2 Night, The Most Beautiful Girl In The World. Cream and Hot Thing were in my 40, so I'm happy.

mike t-diva, Wednesday, 27 July 2011 23:25 (fourteen years ago)

It's pretty music. Don't get the hate.

That said, man we're squeezing in a lot of '90s Prince up in here.

third-generation stripper (Eric H.), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 23:27 (fourteen years ago)

OMG how can you hate The Most Beautiful Girl in the World

really easily...? I find the melody repetitive and the production cloying and goopy, the lyrics stupid beyond belief. "you're the reason god created a girl?" wtf does that even mean.

No Broehner (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 23:27 (fourteen years ago)

There really are 23 positions in a one-night stand. I counted.

third-generation stripper (Eric H.), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 23:29 (fourteen years ago)

One of my friends quipped that Prince wrote TMBFITW about himself, and I've never been able to get that interpretation quite out of the back of my mind.

third-generation stripper (Eric H.), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 23:31 (fourteen years ago)

Uptown and especially Let's Pretend We're Married are way too low...LPWM is like top 3 for me...

monogalomaniacal (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 23:33 (fourteen years ago)

I do hate the keyboards on TMBGITW.

Eric, I had the same thought.

The Edge of Gloryhole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 23:35 (fourteen years ago)

I mostly stuck 80s Prince towards the top of my list,w/ a few exceptions

Neanderthal, Wednesday, 27 July 2011 23:52 (fourteen years ago)

the Cross at 45 wtf

Someone stick on the SOTT vid when Sheila comes in on that tune, jesus

Master of Treacle, Thursday, 28 July 2011 00:08 (fourteen years ago)

i forgot to vote in this, but i hope pop life places well

remy bean, Thursday, 28 July 2011 00:14 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah - I hope this poll doesn't end up chock full o' 90's stuff. Not his finest decade IMHO.

I love that SOTT band photo upthread. New desktop!

Vendo Caramelos A Veces Sin Dinero (Capitaine Jay Vee), Thursday, 28 July 2011 00:24 (fourteen years ago)

His best band as far as I'm concerned (see "For Those Of U On Valium..." concert boot).

Vendo Caramelos A Veces Sin Dinero (Capitaine Jay Vee), Thursday, 28 July 2011 00:26 (fourteen years ago)

I can't believe I missed this poll. I'll be happy if the magisterial "Life Can Be So Nice" cracks the top 20.

broom air, Thursday, 28 July 2011 00:31 (fourteen years ago)

voted for "The Cross" and "Uptown" (my only Dirty Mind vote, never been big on that album), glad to see i helped them make the cut.

there's not way this will be 'chock full' of '90s stuff since we've already seen virtually all of the big obvious later hits. my 4 votes for lesser known post-'80s jams were for naught, i guess.

some dude, Thursday, 28 July 2011 00:34 (fourteen years ago)

xpost I voted for it!

Vendo Caramelos A Veces Sin Dinero (Capitaine Jay Vee), Thursday, 28 July 2011 00:36 (fourteen years ago)

i've never really had a high opinion of "Money Don't Matter 2 Night" but i was listening to it the other day and it felt especially true and profound to me in that moment

some dude, Thursday, 28 July 2011 00:41 (fourteen years ago)

Calling it now: "Every Day Is A Winding Road" at #1

PAJAMARALLS? PAJAMALWAYS! (DJP), Thursday, 28 July 2011 00:42 (fourteen years ago)

and "Insensitive" at #2.

The Edge of Gloryhole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 28 July 2011 00:48 (fourteen years ago)

i'm serious you guys, i want to do a funniest and/or worst prince song poll thread after this thing runs its course

some dude, Thursday, 28 July 2011 00:53 (fourteen years ago)

also possibly a "most WTF song written after 1980 that Prince has covered" poll

some dude, Thursday, 28 July 2011 00:55 (fourteen years ago)

That poll would be a nonstarter because the obvious winner would be his football song

PAJAMARALLS? PAJAMALWAYS! (DJP), Thursday, 28 July 2011 00:56 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i kept thinking of that as a standout

some dude, Thursday, 28 July 2011 00:57 (fourteen years ago)

oh i didn't even see 'black sweat' in there. that's one of mine.

hardcore oatmeal (Jordan), Thursday, 28 July 2011 01:47 (fourteen years ago)

"Black Sweat" is really good but it feels a little on the nose as an '00s pick, i went with "Call My Name" because i love gloopy slow jam Prince sometimes

some dude, Thursday, 28 July 2011 01:53 (fourteen years ago)

I came really close to voting for "Beginning Endlessly" from 20 Ten, but didn't love it enough to squeeze it in. It's definitely one of his finest post WB songs, though.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 28 July 2011 02:01 (fourteen years ago)

"Call My Name" was my only '00s track given consideration. Then I looked at all the '80s stuff I'd have had to leave off and said screw that.

third-generation stripper (Eric H.), Thursday, 28 July 2011 03:32 (fourteen years ago)

"The Cross" is the only pick thus far that I just - don't - get.

mike t-diva, Thursday, 28 July 2011 09:07 (fourteen years ago)

haha that video for 'black sweat' is AWESOME

r|t|c, Thursday, 28 July 2011 09:25 (fourteen years ago)

lol 'the cross' is my fav of the ones to appear so far

pandemic, Thursday, 28 July 2011 09:36 (fourteen years ago)

rtc otm

some dude, Thursday, 28 July 2011 10:40 (fourteen years ago)

Black Sweat was my only post-80s choice - the beat is phenomenal. I like the 90s hits mentioned so far but never loved them.

Strictly vote-splitting (DL), Thursday, 28 July 2011 10:49 (fourteen years ago)

Someone help me out here - which 80s alt-rock band does the guitar on The Cross remind me of?

Strictly vote-splitting (DL), Thursday, 28 July 2011 10:53 (fourteen years ago)

no idea -- i always thought Soundgarden should cover it, though

some dude, Thursday, 28 July 2011 10:58 (fourteen years ago)

It actually sounds like a Soundgarden cover already. That early grunge/psych sound. Maybe I was thinking of the Meat Puppets too.

Strictly vote-splitting (DL), Thursday, 28 July 2011 11:03 (fourteen years ago)

You're not going to like this, but it's kind of a precursor to 'Govinda'

Quantum of Pie (NickB), Thursday, 28 July 2011 11:19 (fourteen years ago)
