lol at my typo -- I meant to say "the Beach Boys' top 10"

an excellent source of vitamins and minerals (WmC), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 20:32 (fourteen years ago)

I want to run a Timbaland poll, so please put me in that running order.

2. Beatles - Mark G (finished)
3. Prince - Jamie_ATP (results currently rolling out)
4. U2 - Ismael Klata (NOW VOTING, deadline Thursday)
5. Beach Boys - iatee
6. Led Zeppelin - WmC

8. Guided By Voices - Johnny Fever

time to put it in hi geir (WmC), Monday, 1 August 2011 22:00 (fourteen years ago)

Stevie Wonder's going to be a big-ass fun-ass argument.

time to put it in hi geir (WmC), Monday, 1 August 2011 22:01 (fourteen years ago)

really? i feel like there's not much controversy about his best/not best material compared to a lot of these other artists.

some dude, Monday, 1 August 2011 22:02 (fourteen years ago)

ah, maybe not. Most voters are probably not going to favor the work of one era as much as I'll favor the 60s singles.

time to put it in hi geir (WmC), Monday, 1 August 2011 23:15 (fourteen years ago)

come on, someone do madonna. is guided by voices week a joke?

second only to popcorn (or something), Monday, 1 August 2011 23:41 (fourteen years ago)

having just heard arthur for the first time, and weeping with joy that i have such things left to discover, i nominate the kinks for a future poll--isn't 99% of their catalogue, at least the first ten years, like all buried treasure?

Iago Galdston, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 00:17 (fourteen years ago)

is guided by voices week a joke?

eff you. I know there are some people around here that are as serious about GBV as I am. I just hope they vote.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 00:21 (fourteen years ago)

Kinks would be a great poll and a fun time.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 00:21 (fourteen years ago)

Oh I'll defo vote in the GBV poll, JF, rest assured!

I for one am (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 00:25 (fourteen years ago)

I'm going to doctor the results of the Stevie poll so that "Summer Soft" makes the top 10, so don't worry that there won't be controversy.

third-generation stripper (Eric H.), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 02:29 (fourteen years ago)

some dude, Eric H - switchsies? These ballots are going along quickly and my poll looks like it'll fall before September 17th, when I won't be available! (Wedding Aug 20 - honeymoon Sept 10-17!) :( I tried to push for as late as possible but it seems we are enthusiastically quick!

premature e-tabulation

time to put it in hi geir (WmC), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 13:44 (fourteen years ago)

Somebody sign up to do a Madonna poll at #9!

time to put it in hi geir (WmC), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 13:47 (fourteen years ago)

I can switch, sure.

third-generation stripper (Eric H.), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 13:48 (fourteen years ago)

Thank you Eric! If anyone else wants my slot for Madonna, that's cool too. I just got too much stuff to do in the next 5 weeks!

and note that 'NOW VOTING', folks

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 18:27 (fourteen years ago)

Ismael, are you using the .xls posted up-thread to gather and process votes? I still need to figure out what the best way of doing that is, for my KB poll.

I for one am (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 18:28 (fourteen years ago)

Hm, I dunno - I might just do it by hand, that worked fine on the football poll. I'm setting myself a quick turnaround target too, so learning a new system may not be wise.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 18:32 (fourteen years ago)

I see, thanks. I can see myself doing it by hand too tbh.

Let me know when this is happening! I've got your back. Dang.

it was pleasant and delightful, just like (La Lechera), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 18:38 (fourteen years ago)

I encourage people giving the .xls a try! I tried my best to set it up so you just have to drag & drop a formula in one column :)

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 18:40 (fourteen years ago)

If the Zep poll goes smoothly, I'm going to sign on for Bob Dylan.

time to put it in hi geir (WmC), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 18:43 (fourteen years ago)

Do these have to be artist-centric? I wouldn't mind doing a grand, overall dance music poll somewhere down the line.

third-generation stripper (Eric H.), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 18:45 (fourteen years ago)

That would probably bring in a lot more ballots than a Stevie Wonder poll, too.

third-generation stripper (Eric H.), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 18:46 (fourteen years ago)

I'd love for someone to do a "Motown" poll or some other interesting label (Warp? Sub Pop? Stax?).

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 18:49 (fourteen years ago)

has anyone claimed james brown yet? if not, i would like to throw in for the godfather.

i also talked about doing a jungle/dnb poll on the idm thread and got some positive responses, but that might be enough of a niche thing that we don't need to include it in this running order? if so, though, let me know.

there was that all-time heavy metal poll, and the rap poll...

Richard Nixon's Field of Warmth (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 18:50 (fourteen years ago)

I think (but y'all correct me if I'm misreading this) that huge overarching themes/genres like dance music are free to tackle outside this lineup of smaller polls. For example, Armond Ratfucker is currently doing post-WWII jazz albums outside this thread's chronology. "Dance Music" sounds like a huge enough thing that it would need a period of nominations before the voting.

time to put it in hi geir (WmC), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 18:54 (fourteen years ago)

There was last year's dance/electronic poll that just died.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 18:54 (fourteen years ago)

(the list in progress)

time to put it in hi geir (WmC), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 18:55 (fourteen years ago)

Motown would be a great one.

time to put it in hi geir (WmC), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 18:55 (fourteen years ago)

I think i'll do a Jacksons one after James Brown - Michael, Janet, Jermaine, Jackson 5, Jacksons, any track by any configuration/family member - think it could be fun.

Jamie_ATP, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 18:58 (fourteen years ago)

oh yeah, that'd be a good one.

king of torts (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 18:59 (fourteen years ago)

Agreed. I'd like to try to set up another dance music poll, but I'll save that for some other time and stick with Stevie now.

time to put it in hi geir (WmC), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 19:10 (fourteen years ago)

I'd quite like to go in the other direction and try doing a write-in for one album. Imagine the complaints. It'd need to be a hell of an album to pull it off though.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 19:11 (fourteen years ago)

yeah get that U2 thing over with already, iatee has more important business to attend to!

Richard Nixon's Field of Warmth (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 19:11 (fourteen years ago)

Oh yeah bold now, I like that.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 19:12 (fourteen years ago)

mulling the jb poll. along with singles, i wonder if it might be interesting to also open it up to a.) albums and b.) tracks featuring jb samples? b.) might be pushing it.

if i do open it to albums, star time is officially excluded.

king of torts (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 19:13 (fourteen years ago)

Ismael, not sure what the "one album" post refers to--?

time to put it in hi geir (WmC), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 19:14 (fourteen years ago)

mulling the jb poll. along with singles, i wonder if it might be interesting to also open it up to a.) albums and b.) tracks featuring jb samples? b.) might be pushing it.

why would you want to restrict a James Brown poll to just the singles? that's crazy.

including sample-based songs is def crazy

Richard Nixon's Field of Warmth (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 19:19 (fourteen years ago)

haha well i meant "tracks," not "singles" per se. and because all the other polls have been limited to tracks!

king of torts (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 19:21 (fourteen years ago)

may do a sub-poll of top five jb-sampling tracks.

king of torts (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 19:21 (fourteen years ago)

xps I mean instead of polling a band, polling Exile On Main Street or Tusk or something. Ballots of five. NB I am NOT volunteering for this.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 19:23 (fourteen years ago)

I don't understand how a poll would include both best album AND best single, like why would you mix those two results together

Richard Nixon's Field of Warmth (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 19:25 (fourteen years ago)

also everyone knows James Brown's best album is "The Payback"
