"perhaps if amy had had some of my cheese this never would have happened"

It's certainly true that staying around the wrong people can make recovery harder, but the idea that there is some one person out there that will "save you" is poisonous shit.
...and I have a massive irrational heart-on for Alex James so I'm not just saying that it's offensive out of personality based reasons.

Drink and drugs are never the problem themselves, they are a symptom of something deeper.
jesus what a fucking nudnik he is

Presumably he'll be turning up at Pete Doherty's house any moment with several nice girls in tow, excellent wife material, will get you off crack in no time.

agreed
that kind of romanticism is actually kind of the opposite of winehouse's fatalism i think

just to clarify, when i said "offensive" upthread i didn't mean to me, I meant to her bereaved family/friends. I should have said disrespectful maybe. whatever you might think of them (and I'm sure many of us have views) a little compassion is in order imo.
Nabisco's piece showed compassion and respect and he'd clearly given the matter some thought (as per usual).

She doesn't mention the most pertinent point, which is how celebrity deaths show up the sheer stupidity of 24hr rolling news and liveblogging.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 27 July 2011 12:34 (fourteen years ago)
that's "getting stuck with an inappropriate format because it's the default now" rather than actively being a dick though
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 27 July 2011 12:46 (fourteen years ago)
though i guess you could argue that "actively being a dick" is also the default now
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 27 July 2011 12:47 (fourteen years ago)
rolling news should be banned
― titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 12:49 (fourteen years ago)
rolling news is fantastic for certain types of news, like the hacking stuffz. assuredly not for celebrity deaths though.
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 27 July 2011 12:49 (fourteen years ago)
Or Norwegian massacres
― R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 12:50 (fourteen years ago)
but what do we get from rolling news that wouldnt be better served from the existing 3 times a day news programmes
― titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 12:51 (fourteen years ago)
I dunno, there's a certain insensitivity to constantly talking about a sensitive issue you know nothing about for no reason than you have to keep people watching/clicking, and just filling up that space with waffle/conjecture/poorly chosen celebrity tweets. Maybe being a dick is the default now, or maybe it's just a different kind of being a dick.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 27 July 2011 12:52 (fourteen years ago)
its about being able to sustain being a dick for longer periods without the chance to take a pause and think about how to be less of one
― titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 12:54 (fourteen years ago)
Gotta admit, when I heard a guy being interviewed who'd been at PRIMARY SCHOOL with Amy Winehouse, I thought, "Why am I watching this shit?"
― R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 12:56 (fourteen years ago)
All this stuff is worse than Bono dedicating a song to her or Alex James being a cock or whatever.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 27 July 2011 12:57 (fourteen years ago)
its bullshit really, makes it easy for people to have less faith in the news, and for reporters to resort to stupid hyperbole to keep our attention

that kerri thing is just mind-boggling - people apologising for stuff when they don't understand why/if they've been offensive, people being offended by stuff when they probably couldn't explain why/what is offensive about it...

Nabisco's piece is really good. Winehouse always reminded me a little of Billie Holiday in her attitude.
― publier les (suggest) bans de (Michael White), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 14:48 (fourteen years ago)
xp I think the Bono point is idiotic TBH. It's not called Song for Michael Hutchence - why should it never be dedicated to another person? And if you're doing it in the context of your own gig why is it automatically read as self-publicity? I don't have a problem with any artist, like them or hate them, dedicating a song to someone who's just died.
― Strictly vote-splitting (DL), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 14:51 (fourteen years ago)
Nabisco, that is a really super piece.
― Penelope iv, Wednesday, 27 July 2011 15:03 (fourteen years ago)
anyone who followed winehouse will know billie holiday, sarah vaughn etc etc were her heroines (much as lauryn hill and erykah badu were)
great piece tho
― titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 15:18 (fourteen years ago)
In the interview I posted she's asked about Billie Holiday and she says "fuck her" and goes on about Vaughan instead. Not sure how seriously to take that.

it was only over the weekend that the double meaning of “I’m gonna lose my baby, so I always keep a bottle near” came to mind; obvs it's the alcoholism to support a bad relationship but the gag about luring your baby with a bottle escaped me until then

I always hear "baby" in that line literally, i.e., obliterating any chance of carrying a pregnancy to term. But could as easily be about a sweetheart.

I live a few doors down from Amy's house, and though I find some of the tributes very moving, it is becoming a little tiresome at night.Last night, we had to close the windows, as some 'fan' decided to play Amy's music through his car stereo at full blast at 11pm.I start work very, very early and, needless to say, was very tired this morning. Also on a further note. Camden Square has always been an oasis of calm in the midst of one of the busiest areas in the world's busiest city. I love the fact that most evenings all you can here are the birds singing, or the squirrels rasping at each other. I hope that our area is not about to become a mecca for fans - a la Abbey Road. I've seen what has become of Abbey Road's walls and signs, we do not want that here.
