It does feel a little weird though: before yesterday she was just this train wreck who made a couple of good albums a long time ago (neutral feeling, no real opinion, shit happens, it's her life, too bad but aren't lying awake worrying about her) but now she's dead, it's suddenly very sad because she'll never recover and make new and maybe even good albums for sure now and that's a waste and a shame.

It's like Schrödinger's cat: when she was still both destroying her life and able to recover, vs. the box has been opened and only one reality exists.

(Yes, Amy Winehouse's death and the reactions are related to quantum physics. Time to go to bed, StanM)

This interview kills me, especially when JR asks her if the record company have tried to mold her (i.e. into a more conventional pop star) and she responds: "Yeah, one of them tried to mold me into a big triangle shape, and I went “no!”"

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Sunday, 24 July 2011 20:43 (fourteen years ago)

Thanks for posting that, Alex. It's lovely.

Alba, Sunday, 24 July 2011 22:17 (fourteen years ago)

Wow. I wasn't familiar with her before she became a mess. It's nice to see her so seeming downright bubbly.

Je55e, Sunday, 24 July 2011 22:26 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, that's what i was going to say -- when she first crossed my radar, she was already as famous for being as mess as for her music.

she's very jewish looking isn't she?

by another name (amateurist), Monday, 25 July 2011 04:36 (fourteen years ago)

just reading that russell brand blog post now... i've always hated the guy's work passionately, but that was really good

J0rdan S., Monday, 25 July 2011 06:27 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, that Amy Winehouse TV interview was great, wasn't it? Compare and contrast that with the shambling mess of every subsequent TV appearance, and it's as good an advert for "don't do drugs, kids!" as you'll see.

ailsa, Monday, 25 July 2011 07:43 (fourteen years ago)

she's very jewish looking isn't she?

...?

Operation Pooting (Colonel Poo), Monday, 25 July 2011 09:10 (fourteen years ago)

Dawg, she was Jewish.

kkvgz, Monday, 25 July 2011 09:41 (fourteen years ago)

Great Quietus piece Lex.

xp amateurist, you did know she was Jewish when you wrote that, right?

Strictly vote-splitting (DL), Monday, 25 July 2011 09:47 (fourteen years ago)

Yes, that's excellent lex.

Neil S, Monday, 25 July 2011 10:55 (fourteen years ago)

Is that writer concluding that Winehouse died because she didn't go to the gym enough?

Matt DC, Monday, 25 July 2011 11:08 (fourteen years ago)

No, because she didn't attend any seminars on how to build a home-based business.

Scritti Eros Poli (King Boy Pato), Monday, 25 July 2011 11:22 (fourteen years ago)

I think if AW had been six sigma certified she wouldn't be dead now.

Jeff, Monday, 25 July 2011 11:24 (fourteen years ago)

In honor of Amy Winehouse I am going to have a salad at lunchtime, maybe an apple as well. It's been too long.

Matt DC, Monday, 25 July 2011 11:30 (fourteen years ago)

Amy went to the gym in the basement of the building i work in. Colleagues used to see her with full make-up / beehive pedalling languidly on the exercise bikes. Not sure how long she stuck at it but it's kind of a poignant reminder that there were points during her life when she was actively trying to improve her health situation.

Last night, M.I.A. posted a track called "27" on Soundcloud. She wrote on Twitter, "i recorded this song B4 vickileekx and never put it out. its a unfinished demo." She added, "R.I.P A.M.Y."

Amy Winehouse was found dead yesterday in her London home at age 27.

On the Soundcloud page, M.I.A. wrote that the track is "dedicated to all my friends that died at 27."

"dedicated to all my friends that died at 27."

how many does she know?

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 25 July 2011 11:52 (fourteen years ago)

the bottle shrine thing is a bit creepy and i worry that even in 2011 people think this is somehow still a 'cool' thing to happen but then when an alcoholic relative of mine died we put a bottle and pack of fags in his coffin too :|

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 25 July 2011 11:53 (fourteen years ago)

actually i dont know why i did the :| emoticon, we put those things in there cos thats what he would have wanted. even if we didnt want him to want them.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 25 July 2011 11:55 (fourteen years ago)

Reminds me of that Private Eye spoof about Jeffrey Bernard, he died a few days after Diana, something about crowds of grieving people leaving empty bottles of gin and vodka in an impromptu shrine to "the man they called the People's Pisshead"

R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Monday, 25 July 2011 11:58 (fourteen years ago)

^^^Not wholly a spoof...

this is the best obit ive read so far. they know their shit and they get what made her so special. unlike most of the dullard guardian writers.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 25 July 2011 12:02 (fourteen years ago)

thx dorian and ismael.

i gather for a while amy got into the gym to the point of obsession - as per this interview with hr from back in the day, just before the wheels startd to come off http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/music/article623366.ece

lex pretend, Monday, 25 July 2011 12:02 (fourteen years ago)

i loved sophie's obit: http://www.independent.co.uk/opinion/commentators/razor-sharp-winehouse-changed-the-music-scene-for-ever-2319530.html

lex pretend, Monday, 25 July 2011 12:03 (fourteen years ago)

its so weird when you think what she was like when frank came out - she was hilarious whenever i saw her being interviewed on tv or in the press. total contrast to what happened afterwards.

i cant be the only one wondering what the demos she did recently with ronson are like and if theyre fit for release.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 25 July 2011 12:09 (fourteen years ago)

i read somewher that she'd actually completed her 3rd album and and turned it in to the label. dunno how accurate that is. i'm sure we'll see it emerge soon, and i'm looking forward to that.

I'll marvel that Zune is being marketed at all anywhere still.

Thoughts from David McAlmont, perhaps just as appropriate for the celebrities and death thread...

Ned Raggett, Monday, 25 July 2011 15:48 (fourteen years ago)

classic and contemp is just winehouse in general though

much as i loved frank when it came out and was slightly dissapointed at how full on retro BTB was i do think it is the stronger album

it is seriously gutting that it will be her last

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 25 July 2011 17:55 (fourteen years ago)

I wouldn't bet against the unreleased material being released as album 3, imho.

StanM, Monday, 25 July 2011 18:47 (fourteen years ago)

I'd be surprised if it amounts to much, sadly - her voice had been shot for years so far as I could tell.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 25 July 2011 18:59 (fourteen years ago)

unreleased material album is a fait accompli; it being bad is a close second
