I find "RIP" for people who aren't dead amusing, period

I do not concur w/Whiney's assessment of Dom as a poster tho

dom was a tedious little boy and ilx improved immeasurably once he was finally kicked off

lex pretend, Sunday, 24 July 2011 00:58 (fourteen years ago)

look dude I actually agree w/you on that point I am not in the free dom clique but he brought some lols from time to time

pathos of the unwarranted encore (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Sunday, 24 July 2011 00:59 (fourteen years ago)

describing anyone with "he brought the lols" = warning sign, it makes me think of like 4chan (also a guarantee that they were never ever funny)

lex pretend, Sunday, 24 July 2011 01:00 (fourteen years ago)

idi amin brought lolz from time to time too, but that's not what he's best remembered for.

well maybe he is at this point.

apichathong song (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Sunday, 24 July 2011 01:02 (fourteen years ago)

not the lols, some lols. he was also a dick who sent hateful trash to some of my favorite ppl here. even I (kind of notoriously the most orthodox-thinking dude around here! iirc) won't go "you're a dick so no lol/otm for you"

pathos of the unwarranted encore (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Sunday, 24 July 2011 01:03 (fourteen years ago)

Something weird abt this whole conversation to me. "its ok not to be reverant about mj cuz he fucked kids" ... Like what? I brought up mj bcuz I thought the tone of the board had shifted not because it makes sense to be more irreverant abt mj (highly arguable imo but also a weird gross thing to bother arguing abt)

Gatsby was a success, in the end, wasn't he? (D-40), Sunday, 24 July 2011 01:04 (fourteen years ago)

the tone of the board has def shifted

Dave Coolaid for Sade (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 24 July 2011 01:05 (fourteen years ago)

Once you quit smoking/drinking/drugs too I guess, you think everyone could do it because you (think you definitively) succeeded. So you call them weak, they call you annoying and they smoke/drink one just to annoy you back, in my experience. Only people who want to stop want to stop.

No idea if this is still relevant to the discussion btw

StanM, Sunday, 24 July 2011 01:06 (fourteen years ago)

Public figures are either open targets or theyre not, ymmv, but acting like it makes sense that wed be more respectful of winehousr is o_O

I actually got really upset & fucked up about AW dying even though I didn't give a shit about her music so as should be clear to all by now I'm just working out my own issues on this thread

pathos of the unwarranted encore (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Sunday, 24 July 2011 01:08 (fourteen years ago)

amy winehouse was a very talented drug addict whose death was tragic but explicable. mj was a genius but also a 40 year saga played out in the most possible public way, with bizarre and possibly criminal turns galore, and a finale that was shocking. people had a long time to build up any number of equally held but seemingly conflicting takes on the man. whereas winehouse had an eight year career, four of which she was out of whack, and two albums, so not much to say beyond so sad.

apichathong song (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Sunday, 24 July 2011 01:09 (fourteen years ago)

not much to say about her death. plenty to say about how her career played out vis a vis the media, and her music.

apichathong song (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Sunday, 24 July 2011 01:11 (fourteen years ago)

this doesn't take a genius to parse out.

StanM, Sunday, 24 July 2011 01:12 (fourteen years ago)

I think today shows how many ppl were really rooting for her to recover, maybe more than I expected. Even cynical news types were just ... sad.

stet, Sunday, 24 July 2011 01:13 (fourteen years ago)

Like most I wasn't shocked to hear this but I was interested in her new album when it was mentioned after her final performance a month ago.

it makes me think of like 4chan (also a guarantee that they were never ever funny)

It's been reduced to people whining about being forever alone and obsessions with actresses on most boards.

I get really upset when talented junkies die.

problem with the Dom tweet is that it's pretty lame by his standards.

wait, what does him being black have to do with it
― J0rdan S., Saturday, July 23, 2011 7:38 PM (2 hours ago) Bookmark

It doesn't have to do with anything other than explaining his fame.. He was ridiculously famous when compared to anyone, let alone Amy Winehouse... His death was more of an "event" thant most over the past few years..

billstevejim, Sunday, 24 July 2011 02:20 (fourteen years ago)

i don't think his fame can be explained by "he was black", but alright

Loved the songs I heard and the presence she had

she wasn't so talented tho, unless i'm missing something.

you are. she was so much more than a amazing voice, which no end of faux-60s retro chanteuses that followed in her wake failed to understand. her songs were great, charismatic, sad, and so full of life, and that's why people give a shit about her.

i keep thinking about a show i saw her play at bush hall around the time Frank came out, and she was so vivacious, so full of life. was stunned to see her circa back to black, all junked out and skinny. i really thought she'd pull it together somehow, and really hoped she would, because, beyond the simple human tragedy of a young girl dying, she was really hugely talented.

i'm not a lawyer, but i play one on a messageboard (stevie), Sunday, 24 July 2011 10:27 (fourteen years ago)

yeah this is really the essence of it. she was a great, great songwriter.

I'll never understand the sort of personal callousness that leads someone to believe that because a human being is a "celebrity," that somehow precludes basic human decency and dignity with regards to discussing their death. But diff'rent strokes..
