Once you quit smoking/drinking/drugs too I guess, you think everyone could do it because you (think you definitively) succeeded. So you call them weak, they call you annoying and they smoke/drink one just to annoy you back, in my experience. Only people who want to stop want to stop.

I actually got really upset & fucked up about AW dying even though I didn't give a shit about her music so as should be clear to all by now I'm just working out my own issues on this thread

amy winehouse was a very talented drug addict whose death was tragic but explicable. mj was a genius but also a 40 year saga played out in the most possible public way, with bizarre and possibly criminal turns galore, and a finale that was shocking. people had a long time to build up any number of equally held but seemingly conflicting takes on the man. whereas winehouse had an eight year career, four of which she was out of whack, and two albums, so not much to say beyond so sad.

not much to say about her death. plenty to say about how her career played out vis a vis the media, and her music.

this doesn't take a genius to parse out.

I think today shows how many ppl were really rooting for her to recover, maybe more than I expected. Even cynical news types were just ... sad.

Like most I wasn't shocked to hear this but I was interested in her new album when it was mentioned after her final performance a month ago.

It doesn't have to do with anything other than explaining his fame.. He was ridiculously famous when compared to anyone, let alone Amy Winehouse... His death was more of an "event" thant most over the past few years..

you are. she was so much more than a amazing voice, which no end of faux-60s retro chanteuses that followed in her wake failed to understand. her songs were great, charismatic, sad, and so full of life, and that's why people give a shit about her.

i keep thinking about a show i saw her play at bush hall around the time Frank came out, and she was so vivacious, so full of life. was stunned to see her circa back to black, all junked out and skinny. i really thought she'd pull it together somehow, and really hoped she would, because, beyond the simple human tragedy of a young girl dying, she was really hugely talented.
