Don't know all those releases. Amplifier Worship is great, so I'll probably go with that. Altar has some good stuff and some bad stuff. If I remember correctly I like the last two tracks on Altar a lot, but the "pretty one" ("Sinking Belle"?) I think I could do without, or at least without the vocals/piano. I've only heard snippets of Pink, but I'd like to hear more.
They're playing in DC in a week or two, not sure if I'm gonna see them though.

Is Rainbow worth checking out if I really like Pink (not so much Altar)?
― Telephone thing, Monday, 15 October 2007 13:38 (eighteen years ago)
It really depends on my mood, but I ended up going with Akuma no Uta (most likely only because its the most recent I've listened to). Rainbow, Altar, Pink, Amplifier Worship, and Absolutego could all have been argued for.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 15 October 2007 13:51 (eighteen years ago)
saw them last night in SF with Kurihara - they were pretty good but seemed thrown off by some lame technical difficulties early in the show, never seemed to regain their footing after the first song
― Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 15 October 2007 16:21 (eighteen years ago)
If Pink wins this, then you can fuck right off. It's a good album, I like it, but it's nowhere near their best. NOWHERE! The true answer is one of these 1996 Absolutego 1998 Amplifier Worship 2000 Flood 2002 Heavy Rocks 2003 Akuma no Uta 2003 Boris At Last: -Feedbacker- 2005 Dronevil
Anything else and you're either having a laugh or a pitchfork reader who hasn't heard the other albums. Archive release is awesome but it's live recordings. So I wouldn't vote for it, but I do play my cds often. They go for $200+ but I wouldn't part with them.

Anything else and you're either having a laugh or a pitchfork reader who hasn't heard the other albums.
the true answer is that they're kind of a mediocre band. let's not get all ANGRY METALHEAD about a band that really doesn't deserve it, unless you're going to be consistent and start posting angrily in food threads and shit.

― DJ Mencap, Monday, 15 October 2007 18:22 (eighteen years ago)
Sorry, but "Dronevil" on vinyl played at a volume that is too loud for anything beats "Amplifier Worship." Maybe it was just the speakers, though.

"If the name appears as "Boris" or "boris," then, the music is most likely an experimental recording.[1]"
As on Akuma no Uta, but is that really one of their more experimental recordings?

btw there's TWO different versions of Vein (I have both) 1 of them is a 2 track "noise" version" and the other is a 12 track "hardcore" version. The 2 track was mailed only to those people who live outside N America. So that it would take a week for people to find out that Boris had screwed everyone over by making 2 different versions (i think there's 1100 of the US version and 400 of the Euro. I got lucky and got mine for what my friend paid for his which was the standard price. It's handy knowing people who can get me ltd us only stuff. This albumw as $100+ on ebay at the time.

The 2 albums with Merzbow are missing too. But the live album is shit anyway. Terrible sound on it. I doubt anyone would've voted for either of them anyway. I don't see Vein getting (m)any. The album with Sunn o))) I do enjoy a lot yet there's plenty who don't so I'll be interested to see if it gets any votes.

The songs on Heavy Rocks and Akuma No Uta are better than the songs of a similar style on Pink. So You have to check out Heavy Rocks and Akuma No Uta.
― Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 19 October 2007 01:13 (eighteen years ago)
exactly.

So… Nothing from them this year? How odd.
(I've only got Feedbacker, Pink and Akuma No Uta, and I think I like Akuma most).
― I eat cannibals, Friday, 19 October 2007 02:10 (eighteen years ago)
Try Heavy Rocks then. But really, the early stuff is untouchable. They've released so much in the past few years the quality control has suffered. There has been lots of ep's in the past year. Another lp with merzbow is out next week I think.

Worth noting that Boris have really started to go in on their Bandcamp page this year; they had a few things up for a long while but after No came out they started adding more and more from the past to the site:
https://boris.bandcamp.com/
Tomorrow vein, präparat and eternity will be added.
― Ned Raggett, Thursday, 1 October 2020 18:17 (five years ago)
There's a bunch of Boris threads so I'm not sure the most appropriate one, but it's been bumped most recently so...
I mentioned this in the Rolling Metal thread, but the new collaboration with Merzbow, 2R0I2P0 is easily one of the best things I've heard from them in a long time. In addition to some other songs, they take on some songs from LOVE & EVOL, and it really hits on the strengths of both. There is a moment during "EVOL" where Merzbow's got a bed of his usual noise grinding away and a soaring guitar solo starts to pierce through, it's great.
― soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 3 December 2020 22:12 (five years ago)
Yeah agreed -- a thrilling album.
― Ned Raggett, Thursday, 3 December 2020 22:23 (five years ago)
I'm genuinely shocked by how good it is. I feel like they've been increasingly hit or miss in recent years and that my days of being absolutely wowed by them were in the past, but happily proven wrong with this one.

was delighted to discover "rainbow" was available to stream after i'd lost my cd copy and couldn't bear to break the seal on my vinyl copy.
also lol, but perfectly in character with the band, that there are two different boris bands with selective sections of their discography on spotify.

Really killer new song, "Cry" on the new Twins of Evil split LP. Sadly the Melvins track is just an inessential rework of a song from their latest album, but the Boris track is worth the (cheap!) price of admission.
