To be honest, I haven't listened to much after 1978 in the past month or so.

Lynyrd Skynyrd- Gimme Back My Bullets
This has a great guitar riff. The droning piano line in the background is kind of reminds me of the overdubs John Cale put on the first Stooges record.

Atomic Rooster- Death Walks Behind You
Why wasn't this a big FM rock radio song? The production is great for 1970, especially compared to Sabbath or some of their contemporaries.

Deep Purple- Mandrake Root
The version I am enjoying is a crazy 30 minute jam from 1970. Blackmore and Jon Lord go into spazmotic fits and the song goes all over the place. There is a spacey part in the middle where I think Jon Lord pulls out a hoover or something. I like it.

Black Sabbath- Wishing Well
Martin Birch flat out knows what he is doing in the studio. I love the sound of the bass and drums on this one.

Thin Lizzy- Don't Believe a Word
I put this onto a compilation I made and have given it a few listens, it is quite catchy.

Free- Don't Say You Love Me
This song is intense and quiet. Free was a really good band.

Iron Maiden- Sanctuary
It doesn't really sound like Maiden, but it is.

Yes- Roundabout
The arrangement on this one is great, I like all of the little overdubs that are placed throughout the record. It is very well crafted.

The Yardbirds- Ha Ha Said the Clown
This song cracks me up. It is one of the last Yardbird singles, but I swear it sounds like a Dukes of the Stratosphear outtake. Keith Relf even sounds like Andy Partridge or is it the other way around?

ZZ Top- Brown Sugar
I have no good reason why this wasn't a hit other than the Stones had a song with the same title come out. ZZ's song is much, much funkier and Billy Gibbons plays some ruthless guitar on this one. I can't believe I never heard this until a few months ago, but I had never heard the first ZZ Top album.

Funkadelic- I Bet You
This song is great.

I guess that makes eleven.

It cracks me the hell up! Plus since that list was an inverted mirror image of my previous list moodwise (see up thread) it was the one that came to mind my the Mag Fields that fit the bill.

Rifle Sport is one of those bands that I should have heard by now considering how much I like Shellac. None of it is in print or at least it hasn't been for awhile; I haven't looked lately and I don't do the whole download thing.

I still have to hear that new Mission of Burma record. It isn't going out of print any time soon, so I will probably wait and cherry pick a used copy.

Never heard of House of Freaks, seems like it might be something I might like. There are so many bands.

Don Covay is one of those singers that seems like it would be interesting music, but I haven't come across any of his records. I'm due to get obsessed again by r&b/soul sometime soon.

I am very streaky when it comes to my listening obsessions. I get into one era or sound for a few weeks on end until it loses my interest and then I jump to another sound. I'll listen to jazz fusion then get into punk/post punk then listen to idm/detroit techno then listen to well you get the point. For some reason, I don't tend to mix it up much.

Never heard of House of Freaks, seems like it might be something I might like. There are so many bands.

Ah man...House of Freaks got no respect in their day. Cakewalk is such a great, understated album with big huge hooks and a strident melancholy twang (kept feisty by Johnny Hott's hyperkinetic odds'n'ends percussion...I tell ya, the man coulda been in Cop Shoot Cop) that is still breaks my heart a decade a change later. They sorta got stuck in the limbo between "college rock' and the alt.country boom that puts dubious folks like Ryan Adams on a fuckin' pedastal. I love that album, goddammit.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 21 May 2004 01:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Rifle Sport is one of those bands that I should have heard by now considering how much I like Shellac. None of it is in print or at least it hasn't been for awhile; I haven't looked lately and I don't do the whole download thing.

I would best describe them as the middle ground between Joy Division and Naked Raygun...The live album (Live at the Entry/Dead at the Exit) is prob. the one I see around the most...apparently their local label - Ruthless Records (not that Ruthless!) was the local label that put their stuff out....Well worth checking out if you like 80s midwest post-punk...

I've heard good things about their two studio albums...you could try record stores in Minneapolis, there tends to be alot more of their stuff around here used for cheap...try these two they might be able to help you track it down:

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Friday, 21 May 2004 10:49 (twenty-two years ago)

1. Tears For Fears - Head Over Heels
Even a good year after seeing it, I have found myself addicted to the montage in Donnie Darko where they play this track and the camera pans through all the characters in slow motion. Possibly one of my favourite bits of direction ever.

2. John B - Blandwagon Poos
What's 'e goin on abaat you muppet?! Banging D'n'B pisstake.

3. Bjork - Bachelorette
Recently bought Homogenic and feel as though she was trying to rip off Aphex a bit too much. Still this song is very powerful.

4. Depeche Mode - Just Can't Get Enough
This has been plaguing me for weeks.

5. Richard Cheese - Insane In The Brain
Lounge cover of the Cypress Hill classic - swear words intact!

6. Lee Perry & Max Romeo - Disco Devil
Thanks whoever recommended this on the dub thread the other day (nate?). The version I downloaded sounds awfully mid-ranged to me compared to "Croaking Lizard" and "Chase the Devil"- is this normal?

7. Snuff - Take Me Home (Piss Off)
I hate punk music in general - especially 90s punk music but lately I've had a real craving for horrible ska tunes. Snuff is probably one of the more respectable one of the lot mind, which leads me on to..

8. The Pogues - Sally Maclenanne
I like the Pogues but equally they piss me off. This is my favourite one by them though.

9. Katatonia - Sweet Nurse
Rediscovered Katatonia and I'm really enjoying them.

10. Pavement - Strings Of Nashville

11. Ural 13 Diktators - Techno Is Dead
In 2001 I wrote a track called Clean Me. I had definitely never heard anything by U13D but the resemblance to this track is frighteningly uncanny even down to the choice of samples.

dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 21 May 2004 10:56 (twenty-two years ago)

1. Justus Kohncke - "The Answer is Yes"

2. Fleetwood Mac - "That's All for Everyone"
Gorgeous dream-pop, sounding a little bit like the Beach Boys' "Til I Die".

3. Tom Ze - "Ma"
Discordant bossa-styled track from mid-70s Ze. Awesome horns.

4. Felix da Housecat - "Nina"
Nostalgic pop from Devin Dazzle. Very simple and pretty.

5. Joyce - "Feminina"
Brazilan singer-songwriter has done two versions of this. This one is from the 90s (original 1980), and is sparser. Acoustic guitar, percussion and lots of her vocals.

6. Tavinho Moura - "Cade O Boi"
More Brazilian stuff. Kind of folky, 6/8, with a cool harmonium-like instrument that makes it seem like a tropical carnival hymn.

7. Franco Leprino - "Integrati...Disintegrati"
Italian electronic/folk/krautrock-esque composer from 70s. This is like gorgeous sex-on-the-beach ambient folk.

8. Led Zeppelin - "Carouselambra"
10-minute prog-styled tune from In Through the Out Door. A lot of fans think this song is lame, but I love it (especially all the keyboards).

9. Free Design - "Bubbles"
If James Bond needs to go grocery shopping, he's got this in the discman.

10. L. Voag - "Bedroom"
Short, celestial track from his 1979 record The Way Out. Kind of reminds me of Animal Collective, in its childlike fancy. Dreamy.

11. Faust/Dalek - "T-Electronique"
Last track on their collab album, and the one most like a normal hip hop song. Totally dig the keyboard line (that Dalek got from original Faust instrumental and slowed way down), and the bass is just too much.
