Finaly got round to hearing this new mix, its damn good. Miles better than the last mix I heard from him, which wasn't bad or anything this one is just vibes.

I've been listening to that Jhene Aiko mixtape this week too she's pretty cool, no idea who she is or how I found it but shes got a track on this mix too and I'm feeling it, owt else I should check out?

jimitheexploder, Saturday, 16 July 2011 13:02 (fourteen years ago)

ok, hearing more of these

LOVE - natalie may (pushes all my buttons), myshy (do i hear my beloved freestyle influence in this? yes i do!), ob/channy angelina (can only find the original but it's terrific), sugababes (this is their comeback single right? is the original actually good too or is this some uk funky remix magic going on?)

DO NOT LOVE - zarif (there is no song here? i'm always aware that most uk funky vocal tunes take several listens to settle down in my head, they're rarely immediate, but this is such a massively aimless songcraft fail), dj spillman (forgot it was on while it was playing, wandered out of room)

DO NOT BELIEVE - there are two google results for that dj eastwood track and one of them is this thread. C'MON THIS DOESN'T EXIST.

also why are none of these released? i hate having to go to youtube or soundcloud to listen to shit.

lex pretend, Sunday, 17 July 2011 10:11 (fourteen years ago)

the martial beat on "clothes off" is so immense

lex pretend, Sunday, 17 July 2011 10:12 (fourteen years ago)

The Myshy is here:

Tim F, Sunday, 17 July 2011 10:35 (fourteen years ago)

hurrah

the ob/channy angelina is on itunes. both original and remix are fab.

lex pretend, Sunday, 17 July 2011 10:46 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah there's definitely a freestyle vibe to "Playground", sorry I assumed you'd heard it already else I would have gone to greater effort to draw your attention to it.

Tim F, Sunday, 17 July 2011 11:11 (fourteen years ago)

at the same time it feels a bit... #cassiefanclub getting really excited about these songs, compared to the halcyon days of "do you mind", "in the air" etc

lex pretend, Sunday, 17 July 2011 11:14 (fourteen years ago)

That's a good and telling comparison.

The reason #cassiefanclub gets lolz is because whatever Cassie does now seems to have no impact on real world R&B. But it's not like R&B is much the better for ignoring Cassie.

Tim F, Sunday, 17 July 2011 11:21 (fourteen years ago)

indeed, it's not really a pejorative - it's just more telling because #cassiefanclub stuff works really well as, y'know, solitary bedroom music, whereas with a lot of uk funky - esp when the songcraft isn't quite up to scratch - it's like, this is nice but what do i do with it?

though that in itself is a good way to sort the wheat from the chaff - i'm having no such issues with "playground" or "ain't wastin' no more time".

lex pretend, Sunday, 17 July 2011 11:24 (fourteen years ago)

Well that's context isn't it: you're consuming this stuff as solitary tracks whereas I'm not for the most part. In fact it's probable that our experiences of funky were fundamentally different even in 2008 for that reason.

Tim F, Sunday, 17 July 2011 11:28 (fourteen years ago)

well yeah i heard them in clubs in 2008. but i haven't been out raving properly in months and really don't feel like i want to any time soon, i think i've accidentally retired myself from clubbing :/

lex pretend, Sunday, 17 July 2011 11:41 (fourteen years ago)

i just want to go to dinner parties and the theatre now

fauxmarc, Tuesday, 19 July 2011 17:49 (fourteen years ago)

wanted to love that, but it doesn't quite click for me

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 26 July 2011 20:55 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, me too. Love Kingdom, love Electrik Red, but the beat seems kind of awkward and it hasn't got much of a tune tbh.

Number None, Tuesday, 26 July 2011 21:08 (fourteen years ago)

yep

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 26 July 2011 21:31 (fourteen years ago)

Did anyone ever figure out what the remixes of "Rock the Boat" or "Knock Knock" from that live set are?

bed bath and beyoncé (The Reverend), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 00:55 (fourteen years ago)

the Knock Knock remix is "Stalker Ha" by Kingdom

writing down my vagina’s sorrows for all the world to see (The Brainwasher), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 01:05 (fourteen years ago)

sons of menarche (donna rouge), Thursday, 22 September 2011 21:09 (fourteen years ago)

prince william is on point along the liens of the rest of them, kingdom's brought him to a few nyc parties

confession: some of his remixes are on point but generally i can't get into total freedom, especially live. whatev.

fauxmarc, Thursday, 22 September 2011 21:37 (fourteen years ago)

i love that edit of "one night stand" on the nguzu dublab mix, not sure i've heard his own stuff tho

sons of menarche (donna rouge), Thursday, 22 September 2011 22:24 (fourteen years ago)

Cute, but kind of awkward?

The Reverend, Saturday, 24 September 2011 19:57 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, I am kinda surprised by how simple that beat is. Seems like was trying to stay out of the way.

handy ban (lou), Saturday, 24 September 2011 23:06 (fourteen years ago)

there was legal beef re: rights over mind reader, i'm surprised they got back together again at all but he's a nice guy - probably a factor.

fauxmarc, Sunday, 25 September 2011 08:48 (fourteen years ago)

handy ban (lou), Sunday, 25 September 2011 19:59 (fourteen years ago)

Ford Cumlord (The Reverend), Thursday, 29 September 2011 20:30 (fourteen years ago)

That party was sick. And I even left before NGUZUNGUZU came on!

T Williams ft Terri Walker - Heartbeat (Paul Woolford Rewurq)

This is an absolute jam, I love the way she makes my heart go BOOM BOOM BOOM.

ha ha ha ha jack my swag (boxedjoy), Tuesday, 25 October 2011 15:57 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah that's a great track. Paul Woolford, at his best, is unfuckable-with as a producer. Weird that he's coming up in sets of this sort of stuff and even in straight funky sets, almost seems the wrong kind of ravey but his stretchy MDMA noises always sound great.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 25 October 2011 16:09 (fourteen years ago)

that remix has never really overtaken the original (or the mosca remix) enough for me

lex pretend, Tuesday, 25 October 2011 16:26 (fourteen years ago)

xp

co-sign on that, I've always thought The Truth was a really under-rated album. His sounds are so brutal and earthy but in the best ways.
