i didn't, i didn't know she was playing until about a day before and i was just too busy :(

yeah, i had to be across town that night too. the show i saw was pretty sublime but still i felt a pang of regret knowing i was missing an erykah show.

really enjoying the gods illa blendtape but not sure what badu had to do with it, beyond some voice overs.

I'm sure they're friends of hers and it's just a way of upping the profile of the thing

The vocalist sounds a bit like Badu but it's Noni Limar.

There's an alt mix of that album's "Major Heavy" in the mix, too.

Shafiq En' A-Free-Ka is one of my favorite albums of the last few years.

Still sinking into it. It seems waaaaay denser than, for instance, Sa-Ra's last one.

"Dust & Kisses" seems by far its most accessible track.

GQ: What's next thing for you?
Erykah Badu: I'm recording an album right now, with [experimental music producer] Flying Lotus. I'm touring. But things are slowing down now 'cause my children are in school again. [Badu has three children: a son with Andre 3000; a daughter with rapper the D.O.C.; and a daughter with rapper Jay Electronica.] This is the time of year when we all nest in our little home in Dallas and cook breakfast and all those things we been doin' on tour, just in one place. I'm kind of a recluse when it comes to going outside.

GQ: How did you and Flying Lotus hook up?
Erykah Badu: We were talking to each other on MySpace years ago when MySpace was a thing. Social networking was how we hooked up. I told him I'd be in L.A. and he came over to Steve Wilson's house—Stevie is a psychedelic guitar player, a great musician. If both of our worlds can meet and we feel good about it, it's going to be something dope.

Are the Cannabinoids just her back up band? Or is there like an ALBUM she is specifically making with them?

reviews from the shows say that they're playing remodelled erykah jams & a bunch of their own stuff. some stuff that erykah does sorta non-authorially doesn't totally do it for me even though it ticks a lot of boxes, like the letterman thing above or the recent blue note thing, which was super nice but just didn't have the focus of her records. like hearing that she's in a group w/tony allen & damon albarn makes me feel like it'll be some nice sounding record that doesn't do anything for me, but who knows, i'm maybe just less into her guest spots than some ppl
