BTW NO ONE AT DEFJAM IS HAPPY ABOUT A FREE ALBUM LOL.... they are trying to stop it!
i wish instead of releasing records this guy's studio was just like a radio station you could tune into. he totally sits there putting records together super-fast or goofing around jamming on sam cooke songs, it would be nice to hear more than ever comes out.

Posted this in the wrong thread. Whoops.
Anyway, Love Slave (http://www.hiphoprnbworld.net/?p=8089) is the first single from 1977, the free album. It's aight, fairly standard Terius love ballad, but there's some nice texture going on underneath. Hopefully it grows on me as much as the double single does.

― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 3 August 2011 01:39 (fourteen years ago)
it's a nice look for him to go back to this -- sounds like something off his first album
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 3 August 2011 01:40 (fourteen years ago)
His voice sounds like that of a man during the verses -- deeper with no trace of brattiness.

would love to find out how Def Jam are screwing him right now. Seriously is there any label with poorer label-artist relationships than Def Jam?
― mingalaba, Thursday, 4 August 2011 05:06 (fourteen years ago)

― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 17 August 2011 09:06 (fourteen years ago)
lol
the micro-level insight into his process you get from twitter is really interesting. like it seems like the genealogy of 1977 is him deciding to make a record called 1977, then designing a cover, then writing some of the songs, getting around to writing the song about his mom that he thought it'd be good to write, etc, the whole thing probably running up to the time of release. it's so weird! but it works for him.

Murderer - inspired by the film Colombiana (i think?). first track we've heard from 1977.
― Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Monday, 22 August 2011 07:43 (fourteen years ago)
yeah idk about that one -- production is kinda cool tho
am i wrong to say those drums are influenced by "pon de floor"/"ass on the floor"/"girls run the world"
― J0rdan S., Monday, 22 August 2011 07:54 (fourteen years ago)
i really dig it, although it could lose the fake nylon string guitar imo.
― hardcore oatmeal (Jordan), Monday, 22 August 2011 14:08 (fourteen years ago)
to me it feels like the drums are just going for a cinematic 'marching snare' thing separate from pon de floor's vibe, but who knows
― hardcore oatmeal (Jordan), Monday, 22 August 2011 14:09 (fourteen years ago)
i only listened once but thought the autotune was kinda killing his voice, some
― sexual union prayerbook slam (schlump), Monday, 22 August 2011 14:35 (fourteen years ago)
that autotune is terrible. not in an "omg autotune is so terrible" kind of way but in "the autotune on this particular track is terrible"
low - murderer vs imogean heap - hide n seek
