Pessimist do you like rap music?

Marmot 4-Tay (marmotwolof), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 22:09 (twenty years ago)

also do you realize how you type like you have a bagga dix in yo mouth?

¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ (chaki), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 22:15 (twenty years ago)

In reverse, now!

- Do you realize you still haven't even tried to argue against me?

- I like some rap music; I can't say I'm well-versed in the field. What does that have to do with anything?

Don't give me "sense of humor". Have you been reading any of my posts? Way funnier than anything you're coming up with. And the kind of embarrassing, childish dick-and-poo talk Tool engage in is basically the antithesis of humor. (There's something else I could say here, but I won't.)

Pessimist (Pessimist), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 23:06 (twenty years ago)

*blinks*

Look, maybe you really think you're funny -- hey, I often have the same affliction (but I don't AUTOMATICALLY assume I'm funny). All you're doing is coming across as one of the most tendentiously dull writers I've read in a long time (and believe me, when you work even slightly in academia, you get to know the type). There's nothing funny in your posts -- intentionally, at least. But if your goal is deep satire, then congratulations, you really capture the mode of suicidal boredom with aplomb.

BRO

gear (gear), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 23:28 (twenty years ago)

You didn't think the bit about the dead rat was funny? Well, maybe you wouldn't. People have been amused by it before, though. I'll admit I have a tendency to use longer words when I'm upset; I like to think it's because I am trying to be precise, but... eh.

I'll also admit this whole thing has upset me more than it probably should. There's something about conspiracy theorists in general, and Bill Hicks/his followers in particular, that just angers me uncontrollably. Sorry about that!

Whatever; this discussion isn't worth anyone's time or anger. No matter what either of us says, I'm going to continue to think Tool are paranoid, arrogant, crass, and inhumane, the worst sort of self-important shock-for-shock's-sake-masquerading-as-Deep nonsense -- as I said, no better than Bill Hicks. Meanwhile, the rest of you are either going to disagree (for various reasons) or not care. Nothing's going to change much.

Pessimist (Pessimist), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 23:28 (twenty years ago)

I honestly couldn't give a care about either conspiracy theorists or Bill Hicks, and I don't think being a Tool fan means you automatically worship either of them. If that helps.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 23:31 (twenty years ago)

I USE LONG WORDS WHEN MAD TOO : (

gear (gear), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 23:34 (twenty years ago)

Well, that's really why Tool bothers me so much -- I mean, aside from the music, which I don't like, but there's a lot of music I don't like, and mostly I don't care about it. But mostly, I don't associate that music with things I strongly and actively dislike, whereas with Tool I do.

But enough. I really should stop this.

Pessimist (Pessimist), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 23:38 (twenty years ago)

Pessimist (Pessimist), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 23:42 (twenty years ago)

gear, I linked to a post of Pessimist's 15 favorite songs above.

Marmot 4-Tay (marmotwolof), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 23:43 (twenty years ago)

wait, you have a dead rat routine? i didn't mind the dead rat part actually. needs work though. the trenchcoat and fedora line was kinda obvious. but i always get a kick out of fight club bashing.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 23:45 (twenty years ago)

or tool bashing apparently. i have little to no interest in tool, and yet here i am.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 23:46 (twenty years ago)

Quiet, you! I'm populist musician Maynard Jones Whatsis, and I'm in a band about tools! My next album is heavily influenced by Tiger Trap!

(Yeah, I think the rat bit might've been better if I ended it after the first paragraph.)

Gear has made me so happy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 23:59 (twenty years ago)

Oh, I'm resisting the urge to... do something right now. Not quite sure what.

Nevertheless, it is perhaps fair to say that I have never had any reason to expect to enjoy the works of Tool. I will grant that point.

Pessimist (Pessimist), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 00:15 (twenty years ago)

do you dig super slo-mo claymation?

Belle and Sebastian – Expectations

Belle and Sebastian vs Tool, let's discuss

Chris Bee (Cee Bee), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 00:25 (twenty years ago)

Salt-N-Pepa homage "Pushit" LOL

Chris Bee (Cee Bee), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 00:27 (twenty years ago)

omg the aenema review...i remember reading that! i was 14, a die-hard tool fan, and i was like "fuck you Spin magazine for insulting my band!" i think i almost wrote an angry letter!

i had the excuse of being 14, though.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 00:29 (twenty years ago)

holy shit that was almost ten years ago...

MY LIFE WHERE HAS IT GONE?

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 00:31 (twenty years ago)

Now there's your Tool lyric.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 00:42 (twenty years ago)

this thread is the gift that keeps on giving, though now I REALLY feel bad for pessimist, who, as far as I can tell, has done nothing to deserve such abuse. But maybe I'm just partial to him because his list o' favorite songs up there prompted me to d/l that black tambourine song (which I listen to on repeat in my car during my commute, it is so great).

I suppose I have nothing to say about tool.

askance johnson (sdownes), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 00:52 (twenty years ago)

No, it's all right. I was really kind of angry back there, and maybe taking this band a bit more seriously than was quite proper. I'm not angry any more.

Pessimist (Pessimist), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 00:55 (twenty years ago)

Belle and Sebastian vs Tool, let's discuss

Belle and Sebastian need more songs about fisting.

Marmot 4-Tay (marmotwolof), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 05:32 (twenty years ago)

incidentally, the new stuff was way way way better live than i'd expected, as someone who hasn't really been very into 10000 days.

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 06:41 (twenty years ago)

10 000 Days is great! I think it's much better than Lateralus so far, and I really liked parts of Lateralus.

Sundar (sundar), Saturday, 17 June 2006 02:31 (twenty years ago)

I'm in love with "Right In Two". And "Wings For Marie" and "10,000 Days" too. Thats the kinda shit Tool does best nowadays.

Orange Pimp (Orange Pimp), Saturday, 17 June 2006 03:16 (twenty years ago)

I love this album as well, probably around number three so far this year. I don't like the way this album ends however, the last song is a waste of time.

BeeOK (boo radley), Saturday, 17 June 2006 03:18 (twenty years ago)

this thread inspired me to relisten to aenima straight through for like the first time in about a year. god, i love that album. definitely tool's peak as far as i'm concerned.

10,000 days has grown on me a little bit, actually. it's not quite as solid as lateralus, but its got its own thing going.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 17 June 2006 03:21 (twenty years ago)

10,000 Days is definitely growing on me, but I've really had to try. I don't think I would have had the patience for it if it wasn't Tool. Still not sure how it stacks up against their other stuff yet, though.

A. Lingbert (A. Lingbert), Saturday, 17 June 2006 04:57 (twenty years ago)

I think Pessimist does make a good point with the Tool-Bill Hicks comparison (and Radiohead should go in there also). But hating art or an artist because of its fanbase and/or because of what it "means" to like them should not be reason enough for disliking the actual art or artist (although Pessimist says he has musical reasons for hating Tool).

Personally, lyrics don't matter that much to me when it comes to whether or not I like a song but I believe they should matter more to me and to other people. I recently came across this Eric Hoffer quote the other day and it makes a good point of saying that there might be hidden costs for a society that doesn't really care at all about the meanings behind their art...

"More significant than the fact that poets write abstrusely, painters paint abstractly, and composers compose unintelligible music is that people should admire what they cannot understand; indeed, admire that which has no meaning or principle."

I think a question that needs to be asked more often is "Why do people desire their lyrics to have meaning?" Why do people get disappointed when they find out that a song is only "catchy" and doesn't serve any larger purpose than that? Is it okay that most of us would have no qualms loving music with abhorrent messages, if they have any discernable messages at all?

The point at which I first heard "Editions of You" by Roxy Music coincides with the point at which I discovered that great lyrics and great music need not go hand in hand.

I like those lyrics!

Cunga (Cunga), Saturday, 17 June 2006 06:36 (twenty years ago)

That's interesting, because I rather like Radiohead, although not so much as I used to a few years ago. I can see what you're saying about their overall worldviews being kind of similar, but I think there are several differences -- the crassness, for one. Tool are relentlessly confrontational, vulgar, grimy, and generally unpleasant; Radiohead are certainly capable of vulgarity, but they employ shock lightly. I get the feeling I might or might not enjoy the company of Thom Yorke (by which I mean his on-stage persona), but his mere presence in a room, talking, wouldn't be sufficient cause for me to get out of said room in disgust and annoyance. I don't feel that way about Keenan.

Second of all, and perhaps way more important, while Radiohead's lyrics are generally suspicious of government et al. in a non-specific way, they rarely (never? probably not never, but I'm too tired to think) make overt reference to specific/established conspiracy theories. Whereas Tool, of course, buys into it wholesale, and says so directly.

Which is where I draw the line -- I have no problem with plausible suspicions of government -- what, somebody might lie about a war, or take bribes? Really? -- but to me, the hardcore conspiracy-theory guy, the kind of guy who's always talking about the Kennedy assassination or UFOs or the moon landing being fake, etc., against all the available evidence, is guilty of libel not only against the participants in said events, but against history itself -- against the notion that historical truth can be legitimately recorded and accountable to evidence.

So, to me, that kind of thing is abhorrent. I'm not saying this to debate the merits of conspiracy theory; I'm just saying that, for me, this is an ethical issue even if it weren't a musical one. (And I reiterate that I don't like Tool musically either, but that one wouldn't expect me to, because I don't like anything that sounds like Tool.)

I might compare it to religion -- practically everyone likes at least one band that happens to be religious, and maybe alludes to it glancingly from time to time. But if proselytizing becomes the focus of the music, well... maybe you can endure it if you happen to be of that religion to begin with. I wouldn't know.

Pessimist (Pessimist), Saturday, 17 June 2006 08:04 (twenty years ago)

Eric Hoffer sounds like a tool.

I forgot all about Pessimist.

Marmot 4-Tay: I'll sip from his well without hesitation. (marmotwolof), Saturday, 29 July 2006 07:21 (nineteen years ago)

turns out i heard the new tool last night, and my reaction was a lot better than the first listens back in april or whatever. i'm still not digging it anywhere near as much 'aenima', which i completely agree is their best album by far, but it's better than i remember it being. 'jambi' in particular is a high point; wouldn't be out of place mixed in with their earlier stuff.
