Most of the first Hatchback album was too twee for me. Carefree Highway is all time, of course, though. How does the new album compare, sonically?

Sorcerer-wise, I thought Neon Leon was a step up in terms of production, "songwriting" not so much.

new album is a lot more padilla-esque new age-style balearic, really kind of a big departure from the last two albums imo (i think it blows them out of the water, one of my favorite albums this year fer sher)

picked it up today (zeus and apollo). production is super spacious. this is going to be one stoned out summer.

I just picked up Zeus and Apollo today... Stupidly, stupidly great. Stately and luminious and just perfectly arranged, perfectly paced... Thank you dudes SO MUCH for bringing this to my attention.

oh wow, yeah, this album is really fucking beautiful

and it makes perfect sense as a progression from his previous stuff; he puts more emphasis on his lush, perfectionist sound design and goes further out into cosmic popol vuh territory by mostly eschewing the krautrock/disco element.

i agree. the thing that stands out most to me on initial listens is how much fuller the sound is.

it's cool to hear more tracks along the vibe of "horizon".

"The Violet Sequence" off of the new Hatchback is so epic... The record is a real feat; I wish it were getting more attention.

Gave a no-laptop-or-other-distractions listen to Zeus and Apollo today...what a great ride that album is, so wide-ranging and immersive but at all these different levels - like, when I think of "immersive" music, I sort of assume a certain sort of depth - bass depth, but also mood - but this thing hits all these different + to my ear very subtle moods and sustains them, really fleshes them out. Tremendous tremendous record.

Umberto are brilliant, there's been some discussion here but I don't think there's a specific thread.

this album is definitely still holding up for me, one of my favorites of the year too for sure. don't want to get too REAL TALK here but it was playing in the background during some fairly traumatic/life-altering discussions for me this year and i still love it. just the right amount of melancholy and escapism, i feel like with any other record in the world the negative associations would kill the music for me but this all just keeps sounding so comforting

smooth sax loopiness of "orinoco waltz" competing with "the laziest river" for epic balearic ambient masterwork of the year imo

Album of the year for me....

holds up against all other albums that I thought I'd like more but ended up less.

The backwards guitar of Zeus & Apollo is just a perfect addition.

Any thoughts on the Wierd Energy CD from Windsurf? Sounds like a more 80s Sorcerer.... if that's possible!

Really enjoying Weird Energy, and also Greeen Linez - Things That Fade which has a similar aesthetic.

after only one listen i agree that weird energy is pretty great (esp "cilantro vision"). dan is one of the nicest dudes ever, good to hear he's still at it.

i love that they're moving more and more towards completely straightfaced smoove '80s balearica, seems like few people outside of the claremont 56/international feel/esp institute axis have the balls to pull this off without adding extra layers of irony or digital manipulation or w/e (tho i like that type of thing too, tbh)

i'll have to keep an eye out for that greeen linez record

i don't listen to any of this stuff anymore, i should start again

if you haven't already given it a shot, you should probably start with the hatchback record from last year - tho it's a bit more new agey/cosmic than the rest of their output

still trying to get my hands on the flights of fancy stuff, based on the samples i've heard they seem to be nailing this vibe
