WOWOWOW just saw Kingdom AND Nguzunguzu play tonight... they both DESTROYED. And DJ Mike Q was amazing as well... Some of the tracks they dropped:

Mariah - Touch My Body REMIX (the one with Rick Ross & The-Dream)
T2 - Heartbroken
this dope ass remix of Jodeci's "Freak'n You"
Butch - No Worries
the Jhene "Stranger" remix
Trick Daddy - Shut Up
this crazy remix of Christina Aguilera's "Bobblehead"
that "Roman's Revenge" edit

etc. etc. etc. SO MUCH FUN.

The Brainwasher, Friday, 24 June 2011 09:43 (fourteen years ago)

and that new Electric Red song or whatever it is sounds great on a good soundsystem

anyway I have a major headache now lol

The Brainwasher, Friday, 24 June 2011 09:46 (fourteen years ago)

Aww, wish I had known you were there BW! So fun.

At the New Museum event earlier in the day, they also played an Electrik Red- "Freaky Freaky"/ Dawn Richard- "Vibrate" blend that was total ILM bait.

I neeeeed "Take Me"! He should release it already.

bed bath and beyoncé (The Reverend), Thursday, 14 July 2011 09:49 (fourteen years ago)

The finest fake R&B in a long time, I think (that's a genuine compliment not backhanded snark).

Tim F, Thursday, 14 July 2011 12:07 (fourteen years ago)

i love that the one thing haters and stans can both agree on with this topic is viewing tim's diplomacy with suspicion :)

ha

bed bath and beyoncé (The Reverend), Thursday, 14 July 2011 18:25 (fourteen years ago)

if i was tim's editor i think i'd actively try to commission him to do ever more egregious reviews in the hope of goading him into finally delivering BILE and VITRIOL

lex pretend, Thursday, 14 July 2011 18:29 (fourteen years ago)

No I like "Take Me"!

My comment was a marker for a thought bubble on how a lot of the stuff in this general area plays with R&B obv but I feel like this is neither some kind of post dubstep ish with sampled vocals slapped on nor just a bootleg. Kingdom's beat works for R&B while still retaining a point of difference. Most attempts at that sort of thing fail.

Tim F, Thursday, 14 July 2011 21:08 (fourteen years ago)

the finest fake bugz in the attic in a long time, i think

r|t|c, Thursday, 14 July 2011 21:25 (fourteen years ago)

Haha that's true too actually!

Remember that Arms remix of Tawiah? Bet Kingdom would like that.

Tim F, Thursday, 14 July 2011 21:33 (fourteen years ago)

that remix was seriously one of the highest points of uk funky that apparently no one else cared about outside of ilx

lex pretend, Thursday, 14 July 2011 23:13 (fourteen years ago)

i wish that kind of uk funky was still made, fuck MCs

lex pretend, Thursday, 14 July 2011 23:14 (fourteen years ago)

Um, it is still made. Check Champion ft. Ruby Lee Rider "Sensitivity" for starters.

Tim F, Thursday, 14 July 2011 23:35 (fourteen years ago)

lex pretend, Thursday, 14 July 2011 23:40 (fourteen years ago)

Tim F, Thursday, 14 July 2011 23:45 (fourteen years ago)

bed bath and beyoncé (The Reverend), Thursday, 14 July 2011 23:46 (fourteen years ago)

of the ones i've heard, YES to "feel nice, feel right", those remixes of "fall outta love" and "heartbeat" were disappointing compared to the originals, the sugababes one sounds good on one listen. surprised r1 ryders' "ain't wastin' no more time" isn't there!

heard the kingdom/naomi track now, love it <3

lex pretend, Friday, 15 July 2011 10:07 (fourteen years ago)

can't really get more ciaraesque than 'sensitivity'

r|t|c, Friday, 15 July 2011 10:41 (fourteen years ago)

lex pretend, Friday, 15 July 2011 13:27 (fourteen years ago)

it's so gooooood so gooooood

tpp, Friday, 15 July 2011 13:38 (fourteen years ago)

here's the tawiah remix. the arms remix of lloyd's 'how we do it' from around the same time is great too.

there's a cdq of 'sensitivity'? can't find it anywhere.

Tim F, Friday, 15 July 2011 23:54 (fourteen years ago)

Finaly got round to hearing this new mix, its damn good. Miles better than the last mix I heard from him, which wasn't bad or anything this one is just vibes.

I've been listening to that Jhene Aiko mixtape this week too she's pretty cool, no idea who she is or how I found it but shes got a track on this mix too and I'm feeling it, owt else I should check out?

jimitheexploder, Saturday, 16 July 2011 13:02 (fourteen years ago)

ok, hearing more of these

LOVE - natalie may (pushes all my buttons), myshy (do i hear my beloved freestyle influence in this? yes i do!), ob/channy angelina (can only find the original but it's terrific), sugababes (this is their comeback single right? is the original actually good too or is this some uk funky remix magic going on?)

DO NOT LOVE - zarif (there is no song here? i'm always aware that most uk funky vocal tunes take several listens to settle down in my head, they're rarely immediate, but this is such a massively aimless songcraft fail), dj spillman (forgot it was on while it was playing, wandered out of room)

DO NOT BELIEVE - there are two google results for that dj eastwood track and one of them is this thread. C'MON THIS DOESN'T EXIST.

lex pretend, Sunday, 17 July 2011 10:10 (fourteen years ago)

also why are none of these released? i hate having to go to youtube or soundcloud to listen to shit.

lex pretend, Sunday, 17 July 2011 10:11 (fourteen years ago)

the martial beat on "clothes off" is so immense

lex pretend, Sunday, 17 July 2011 10:12 (fourteen years ago)

The Myshy is here:

Tim F, Sunday, 17 July 2011 10:35 (fourteen years ago)

hurrah

the ob/channy angelina is on itunes. both original and remix are fab.

lex pretend, Sunday, 17 July 2011 10:46 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah there's definitely a freestyle vibe to "Playground", sorry I assumed you'd heard it already else I would have gone to greater effort to draw your attention to it.

Tim F, Sunday, 17 July 2011 11:11 (fourteen years ago)

at the same time it feels a bit... #cassiefanclub getting really excited about these songs, compared to the halcyon days of "do you mind", "in the air" etc

lex pretend, Sunday, 17 July 2011 11:14 (fourteen years ago)

That's a good and telling comparison.

The reason #cassiefanclub gets lolz is because whatever Cassie does now seems to have no impact on real world R&B. But it's not like R&B is much the better for ignoring Cassie.

Tim F, Sunday, 17 July 2011 11:21 (fourteen years ago)

indeed, it's not really a pejorative - it's just more telling because #cassiefanclub stuff works really well as, y'know, solitary bedroom music, whereas with a lot of uk funky - esp when the songcraft isn't quite up to scratch - it's like, this is nice but what do i do with it?

though that in itself is a good way to sort the wheat from the chaff - i'm having no such issues with "playground" or "ain't wastin' no more time".

lex pretend, Sunday, 17 July 2011 11:24 (fourteen years ago)

Well that's context isn't it: you're consuming this stuff as solitary tracks whereas I'm not for the most part. In fact it's probable that our experiences of funky were fundamentally different even in 2008 for that reason.

Tim F, Sunday, 17 July 2011 11:28 (fourteen years ago)

well yeah i heard them in clubs in 2008. but i haven't been out raving properly in months and really don't feel like i want to any time soon, i think i've accidentally retired myself from clubbing :/

lex pretend, Sunday, 17 July 2011 11:41 (fourteen years ago)

i just want to go to dinner parties and the theatre now
