ya of an ILX meme from 2008

s1ocki, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:17 (eighteen years ago)

ilx was a lot better then

deej, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:18 (eighteen years ago)

lol lighten up old man, it's catchy

omar little, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:18 (eighteen years ago)

back in the days when memes were cool

s1ocki, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:18 (eighteen years ago)

it just sounds like one of those upbeat pop/lite-rock for your workday radio stations + a couple rap songs

add gorilla zoe and paul wall to this playlist http://b985.com/lsp/index.html & you could have the next highly anticipated girl talk LP

and what, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:19 (eighteen years ago)

madonna, prince, animotion, men at work, janet jackson, fergie... all recontextualized by wacky morning djs!!

and what, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:20 (eighteen years ago)

i guess youd also have to replace nickelback with clap your hands say yeah or something

and what, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:20 (eighteen years ago)

i like it as an exercise in pushing my pop-memory/nostalgia buttons...

Yes, definitely.

jaymc, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:20 (eighteen years ago)

the problem w/ this album i think is that it's kind of the album that haters like deej and ethan who know what he sounds like w/o really listening to him assume he makes, basically kitschy and in some ways obvious vocal samples over kitschy and in some ways obvious instrumental samples just laid out there for ppl to decide "this is a good idea" v. "this is not a good idea". there's no real build-up in these like there were on night ripper, and it's kind of nice but not as much fun. it sounds like his live shows do, it's just not as much fun when you are in your bedroom. i still like this a lot cuz it's like listening to the radio for an hour basically but it's def not on night ripper's level.

J0rdan S., Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:21 (eighteen years ago)

apart from trying to figure out the songs he stole samples from this is boring.
also, the mashup thing extract itself already.

Zeno, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:21 (eighteen years ago)

i mean ethan isnt wrong in his zings, so i guess it comes down to whether or not you think girl talk has better ideas than most others and i do. the execution isn't there like it was imo but i dont see how anyone who liked night ripper could not at least like this too.

J0rdan S., Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:28 (eighteen years ago)

i think part of the problem for me isnt that its bad cuz its all obvious, but because its obvious its really hard to discern any kind of personality in his selection skills ... like there's no track that really says anything about his own taste, its just all within the same formula of top 40 hip hop x indie x 80s pop we all know and love

there's nothing that genuinely feels like its from left field, the expectation is set up going in and then its fulfilled, completely and boringly

deej, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:30 (eighteen years ago)

I love the deejwhat assumption that Girl Talk is trying to make some high art here that needs to ascribe to some notion of cool or timeliness or cleverness. It's just making people freak out to dance music by taking all the best parts of songs that normal people like and squishing them together. It's exactly what a good DJ does in a 4 hour set, but in 45 minutes.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:31 (eighteen years ago)

the goal isn't to learn more about gregg gillis, the goal is to get people to dance to songs they already like

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:32 (eighteen years ago)

it just sounds like one of those upbeat pop/lite-rock for your workday radio stations + a couple rap songs

this is the first description of this that makes me want to hear it cause 1) I like lit-rock workday radio stations and 2) I like rap so what's not to like here

J0hn D., Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:32 (eighteen years ago)

i haven't heard the new album, btw

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:32 (eighteen years ago)

it bugs me on the same level as like people who buy "the most relaxing classical music album in the world... ever!" or something - in 2008 does anybody really need to buy a record by the dude from girl talk to bring lil wayne & red hot chili peppers to them?

and what, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:32 (eighteen years ago)

then why are we talking about gregg gillis xxp

deej, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:32 (eighteen years ago)

i guess like jordan admitted it comes down to whether you like the idea of girl talk or not... if you think girl talk dude is super radical then you'll go to him for your blondie + paul wall fix but if you think shit is really ugly & embarrassing youll just hit soulseek or listen to b98.5

and what, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:34 (eighteen years ago)

Gillis is just the peaks of Wayne and Keidis. People aren;t going to him to hear Wayne, they go to hear the best part of Wayne and maybe hear it in a different context and setting. You can't get bent if people have different listening habits than you.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:35 (eighteen years ago)

this is where i kind of agree w/ deej (long xxxp) wrt to feed the animals in particular, mostly because he seems to have purposefully cut down on his craftsmanship on this one, or more to the point he isn't working w/in his formula to create his own moments like he did on night ripper. i dont think the formula itself is the problem though.

J0rdan S., Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:36 (eighteen years ago)

it bugs me on the same level as like people who buy "the most relaxing classical music album in the world... ever!"

yeah this could just be a symptom of me getting older & less bothered by shit 'cause those "relaxing classical" albums used to really annoy the shit out of me, I had all kinds of cranky objections to 'em, and now my position on 'em is "does it have good music on it? k good, pity about the lame title/cover but whatever," I can date this change to when somebody gave me like the lamest-looking "Chopin for Lovers" comp & I love Chopin so I was like "God fuck this" but then I listened and it was like "damn, quality Chopin mix dudes, can't front" you know?

J0hn D., Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:36 (eighteen years ago)

nah ethan i don't mean whether or not you like the idea of girl talk (by which you mean the idea of a mash-up in general), but rather if you like his ideas in particular even tho he's working with the same materials as your local station's late night dj

J0rdan S., Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:37 (eighteen years ago)

i only listen to chopin mixed up w/rachel stevens

omar little, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:38 (eighteen years ago)

xxp

plus i think Girl Talk is less of the LOL MASHUP NEON HOOD INTANETZ BONER CRUNK LET ME LICK DA LOLLERPOPS bullshit that deej/what is trying to paint him as, and more of a plunderphonics guy in the vein of Steinski and Negativland and John Oswald.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:38 (eighteen years ago)

so i think it's up to taste (xp to myself), which is a boring conclusion to come to, but if you dislike the idea of mash-ups in general you shouldn't ascribe your feelings about the genre to just girl talk. i mean i dont like metal at all so i dont go in the metal threads saying that i think mastodon is awful (which i do)

J0rdan S., Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:40 (eighteen years ago)

i mean im sure "the most relaxing classical album in the world... ever" has some jams on it but itd be dumb to buy that off the infomercial instead of actually just copping a vivaldi LP from goodwill, especially since i would be almost as embarrassed to have that cd lying around my house as i would a girl talk cd

and what, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:41 (eighteen years ago)

there's nothing wrong with being a blends DJ, and if your approach is a little different or unique, hey, great. but when that tiny little bit of difference translates to big music mags running rave reviews of your blends tape as an 'album' and kids paying to see you as a headliner in rock clubs, it's a little weird.

some dude, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:41 (eighteen years ago)

^^^^^
this would all be well and good if we were talking about some random best classical music cd ... EVER cd that you copped at a truck stop during a road trip, but this shit gets all kind of press and BEST ALBUM OF THE YEAR accolades

deej, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:41 (eighteen years ago)

at least embarrassing "jazz music for dummies!" compilations arent getting fawning write ups in lifestyle mags

deej, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:41 (eighteen years ago)

ok so then admit from the jump that it's about the press he gets more than what he's actually putting out there

J0rdan S., Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:43 (eighteen years ago)

and his albums aren't compilations so this is a really loose and awful comparison. compilations dont get coverage usually because it's assumed that people have heard the songs already so they don't need to be covered again. this is distinctly different.

J0rdan S., Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:44 (eighteen years ago)

this is destined to get the same treatment as Go! Team's "Proof of Youth," right?

Tape Store, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:44 (eighteen years ago)

plunderphonics guy in the vein of Steinski and Negativland and John Oswald.

except i could actually recognize a steinski mix and dude was doing more than just lol biggie/indie mash-ups

and what, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:47 (eighteen years ago)

I honestly don't think Girl Talk does lolmashups tho. He was doing serious, NOISY, ugly, plunderphonic work on Illegal Art for two (excellent) records before Night Ripper. I think he just wanted to see if he could make a dance record out of it. He did and frenzy ensued.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:50 (eighteen years ago)

I think it's unfair to use the word "mashups" with Girl Talk, honestly.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:51 (eighteen years ago)

whiney you are right about his pre-night ripper stuff and where his head is at but feed the animals is a bunch of mashups

J0rdan S., Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:52 (eighteen years ago)

I think it's unfair to ever use that word, honestly. (xpost)

some dude, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:52 (eighteen years ago)

but i dont use that word pejoratively tho

J0rdan S., Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:52 (eighteen years ago)

but feed the animals is a bunch of mashups

I have like 900 albums on my desk that i have to get through for this week, so I'll return to this thread when I've heard it, I guess.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:56 (eighteen years ago)

1) i am not sure why this guy in particular is getting all the attention, i think it is TOTALLY fair to call this stuff mashups--if these aren't, what is--and tons of ppl have been doing them since like 2001. so why this dude? he doens't even seem to be a particularly media-friendly personality. i have to assume ppl actually like the WAY he does it beyond just the concept...

2) saying that night ripepr or whatever is exactly like listening to the radio is kinda disingenuous, it's a funny dis but we all know it's not an exact equivalent.

s1ocki, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:58 (eighteen years ago)

3) don't know why i numbered those.

s1ocki, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:59 (eighteen years ago)

@RaptorAvatar: he took colored-peoples' music and made it white! what's not to like, right?? and since its white..its (probably) art.

J0rdan S., Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:59 (eighteen years ago)

i can't believe lil wayne said that

s1ocki, Thursday, 19 June 2008 18:00 (eighteen years ago)

surprisingly coherent for him too

J0rdan S., Thursday, 19 June 2008 18:01 (eighteen years ago)

i'm weezy btw

some dude, Thursday, 19 June 2008 18:01 (eighteen years ago)

I can't believe I missed this thread's delights.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 19 June 2008 18:07 (eighteen years ago)

Girl Talk does mash-ups, for sure, but his M.O. is a lot more than "lolmashup," though -- I mean, I'd heard plenty of terrible mash-ups before Night Ripper, but the reason that album clicked for me really had to do with the flow. It wasn't just slapped together like "hey rap song + rock song lolz!!" -- it was about dropping in samples at a rapid-fire pace that alternately disorient you ("wait, where do I know that from?") and hit your pop-music pleasure spots ("oh, shit, I love this song!"), all the while building this tapestry of sound that works as its own composition. At its best, there's an intricacy to it, and that's what I respect. (I want to withhold judgment until I've listened a few times, but I think I agree with J0rdan that Feed the Animals lacks some of the intrinsic build and contours that Night Ripper has).

jaymc, Thursday, 19 June 2008 18:08 (eighteen years ago)

so it's a mashup with 10 songs in one track instead of 2, basically?

some dude, Thursday, 19 June 2008 18:09 (eighteen years ago)
