dude metal is cool

pssst - badass revolutionary art! (plsmith), Monday, 1 May 2006 19:25 (twenty years ago)

Metal is cool, but most of the stuff on Relapse is crap. Except for Soilent Green.

trees (treesessplode), Monday, 1 May 2006 20:37 (twenty years ago)

Mastodon were on relapse. High On Fire, Dillinger Escape Plan, Unearthly Trance, Don Caballero, Dysrhythmia are all on Relapse. Hardly crap.

pretty much OTM except high on fire, mastodon, unearthly trance and some excellent reissues (repulsion, cryptic slaughter, atheist, disembowelment).

Zombi were brilliant last night in Cardiff, so much so I'm going to see them again in Bristol on Monday.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 20 July 2006 12:22 (nineteen years ago)

How were thrones? I'm skint and can't afford to go see them :(

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Thursday, 20 July 2006 12:25 (nineteen years ago)

All but one of my friends said Thrones were shit. I'm going to Capsule in Birmingham on Sat so I gave it a miss

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 20 July 2006 12:29 (nineteen years ago)

If I had went it would've been to see Zombi, but i'd like to have seen Thrones too. Its a shame Joe left High On Fire.

Hypertension Records are releasing Zombi - Surface To Air on vinyl if anyone wants/needs it on vinyl. Its only 10 euros as well.
http://www.hypertensionrecords.com/

14 July 2006:
ZOMBI "SURFACE TO AIR" PREORDER NOW AVAILABLE
From today on we are accepting preorders for the long awaited and highly acclaimed ZOMBI "Surface To Air" LP. For this preorder we've set a special price of 10 euro. Only the first 100 preorders will be receiving COLORED VINYL. The album comes in a deluxe gatefold cover and is printed on high quality thick vinyl.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Thursday, 20 July 2006 12:32 (nineteen years ago)

Thrones were very unengaging. Some interesting things going on in places, but the sound balance wasn't right and one of the amps blew up early on. On one song, even Joe seemed completely bored and just fiddled with his pedals for a bit rather than interact with what was going on.

(Kerr, you know about Sleazy's on Wednesday?)

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 20 July 2006 12:38 (nineteen years ago)

surface to air is sort of disappointing; its all crash cymbals and no funky breaks

S-L-U-G (plsmith), Thursday, 20 July 2006 12:55 (nineteen years ago)

Aldo I do but as I said im really skint and can't afford it.

Steve Moore demos from 2003 are getting a vinyl release next month. These were only available on cdr a few years back, I've never heard them so look forward to this. The Henge was really good.

You may have already heard Steve Moore's work as one-half of the unbelievably awesome prog-rock instrumental duo Zombi, or through his phenomenal first solo-album called "The Henge" (Relapse/Static Caravan, 2007). Now Moore gives us "Demo 2003," a re-issue of his first solo recordings from the turn of the millenium. In contrast to Zombi's tightly structured progressive epics, "Demo 2003" is an exploratory, psychedelic meditation. Over the course of its 10 tracks, including the previously unreleased "Fever Dream", "Demo 2003" explores psychedelic paths through dark atmospheres and drifting harmonies. Smaller in scale than "The Henge," these tracks document Moore's initial fascination with analog synthesizers, focusing more on experimental timbres and droning ambience than on composition or form. This is why this long-player becomes the soundtrack of the mind. It is paranoid, monumental music that hypnotizes the listener with an unholy mix of gloomy, nightmarish, electronic ambiences and the neverending and almighty cosmic beauty.

New album Spirit Animal is easily the best thing they've ever done. Better than Cosmos.

dunt renaissance (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Sunday, 15 February 2009 14:44 (seventeen years ago)

I don't think Spirit Animal is as good as Cosmos. But then again... Cosmos was a pretty high benchmark. Maybe I should just listen to it a bit more and see if it grows on me. You know, play twice before listening and all that.

TELL US MORE

More Butty In Your Pants (Telephone thing), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 03:06 (sixteen years ago)

Limited to 1000 copies, Majeure's debut isn't expected to be available too long given that it's a project of Zombi's drummer, A.E. Paterra, and their stuff is so in demand these days. Plus it's totally amazing! More rhythmically focused than the stuff his main band have been doing for the past few years, the three side-long odysseys that make up this double LP eschew the more proggy stop-start stuff in favour of sticking a pin in the sky, focusing on a star and propelling you right the fuck there. He's dropped the horror for a little bit of star gazing.. Although John Carpenter still frequently comes to mind. At various points I'm also reminded of the mint Vangelis tune that plays over the Blade Runner credits, Detroit techno, classic electro, the cosmic disco of prime Cerrone, Moroder etc. etc. Klaus Schulze more than deserves a mention too, especially as Timespan sounds like it could easily pass for one of his album titles. Totally stompin' analogue synth heaven and the best thing I've heard either he or Steve Moore do since their brilliant early releases. And it's all packaged up in a lavish sci-fi themed gatefold sleeve that fits the sounds a treat, comes with an MP3 download code and sports a tasteful geometric etching on the fourth side.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 12:27 (sixteen years ago)

It's like the missing link between Lindstrom and, you know, *real* prog. And it's awesome.

Not as dance-oriented as that review implies, but still awesome. (Take that with a grain of salt, as I didn't hear the dance influence in Black Meteoric Star, either.)

Strawberry Letter 22 (Masonic Boom), Saturday, 24 October 2009 18:47 (sixteen years ago)

hehe everything is Lindstrom to you!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 24 October 2009 18:56 (sixteen years ago)

I think I might have a new obsession.

But it is pretty Lindstromy, you have to admit. Or rather, Lindstrom and this are exploring pretty similar ground - i.e. the strange hinterland between synth-prog and EDM.

Strawberry Letter 22 (Masonic Boom), Saturday, 24 October 2009 19:05 (sixteen years ago)

Where the hell did my Vangelis CD go? Could have sworn I got one out this morning.

Strawberry Letter 22 (Masonic Boom), Saturday, 24 October 2009 19:06 (sixteen years ago)

have you heard the Steve Moore albums?
I assume you have all the Zombi.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 24 October 2009 19:24 (sixteen years ago)

I have all the Zombi, but don't know the Steve Moore.

However, at the moment I am too busy leaping up and down on my bed, striking courageous and adventurous poses while staring off into space and listening to Vangelis. It just has to be done sometimes.

Strawberry Letter 22 (Masonic Boom), Saturday, 24 October 2009 19:39 (sixteen years ago)

well now you can listen to steve moore

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 24 October 2009 20:05 (sixteen years ago)

Thank you! I'll listen on Monday as it took me the better part of 5 hours to get that Majeure album. :-(

Strawberry Letter 22 (Masonic Boom), Saturday, 24 October 2009 20:11 (sixteen years ago)

this amg reviewer http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:fbfoxzlkldse~T1 i doubt has actually played the album.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 24 October 2009 22:42 (sixteen years ago)

Nah, I'm sure they listened to at least one or two songs. However, being totally unfamiliar with anything referenced within (Goblin, Tangerine Dream, Vangelis, etc.) - they just went for the only vaguely proggy sounding reference they could think of.

Strawberry Letter 22 (Masonic Boom), Saturday, 24 October 2009 22:45 (sixteen years ago)

..Which sound fuck all like Zombi..

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 24 October 2009 22:49 (sixteen years ago)

OK, really loving the freebie track from that Majeure album...

More Butty In Your Pants (Telephone thing), Saturday, 24 October 2009 22:50 (sixteen years ago)

I rate Cosmos above all, maybe because it's the one I heard first. Funny that I listen to Timespan & PNP alot more than the last proper Zombi record though. Escape Velocity was less satisfying because it ended up just sounding like a sampler of the solo stuff. Also maybe I'm just expecting more prog when they work together as well.

WARS OF ARMAGEDDON (Karaoke Version) (Sparkle Motion), Thursday, 1 November 2012 17:47 (thirteen years ago)

New Umberto not charming me the way the last one did tbh.

Well, ILE be damned! (seandalai), Thursday, 1 November 2012 20:21 (thirteen years ago)

Same here-- from what I understand he did it for a film fest and didn't initially intend to release it. Just blasted Prophecy of the Black Widow last night and it is still ACE

WARS OF ARMAGEDDON (Karaoke Version) (Sparkle Motion), Thursday, 1 November 2012 20:47 (thirteen years ago)

Totally agree. POTBW is still an incredibly strong album. I too, was getting all seasonal with Umberto for the past week or so. What is the new album called?

So there is a new Majeure album out...and it's pretty good. I'm not sure how it stacks up with Timespan which I loved. I thought that even the Timespan remix album was pretty incredible. I need more time with Solar Maximum but for the most part it's pretty much an extension of the first one.

Non-Stop Erotic Calculus (bmus), Tuesday, 11 December 2012 22:57 (thirteen years ago)

An extension in the best way possible.

Non-Stop Erotic Calculus (bmus), Tuesday, 11 December 2012 22:58 (thirteen years ago)

not as good as timespan imo but timespan is so so great. still a darn good record tho. also the 'synthesizer of the gods' ep is top hole

i'd like to hear them both extend themselves a bit more on their solo stuff. surely moore has another 'henge' (in spirit if not necessarily in sound) in him somewhere

boo-hoo-ty sapperticker (electricsound), Tuesday, 11 December 2012 23:00 (thirteen years ago)

I agree, Timespan would be awfully hard to match.

Henge certainly is great. Definitely one of the only albums out of this genre to legitimately scare me. Not that that is the ultimate goal here. But I think it even has a jump-scare moment in there somewhere.

I haven't heard Synthesizer of the Gods. That's a Majeure EP?

Non-Stop Erotic Calculus (bmus), Tuesday, 11 December 2012 23:07 (thirteen years ago)

yep. he's got a bunch of pretty consistently good odds n ends here: http://majeure.bandcamp.com/

The new Steve Moore album Beloved Exile is good in general but I especially love the last track, “My Time Among the Snake Lords,” and how it shapeshifts seamlessly throughout - I think it might be the longest solo track he’s recorded? I may be wrong.

Looks to be about the same as the closing track on The Henge.

I didn't even know he had a new one, thanks for the tip. It's really quite good but not surprising- the quality level of his releases is generally high imo.
