I do not rate The Fragile; it is okay, but I do not own it and would not ever like to hear it again. And Things Falling Apart should be DESTROYED DESTROYED DESTROYED! omg soooo bad.

I agree that the Perfect Drug is definitely one of their best tunes (damn, Trent would have become a jungle producer...).

D'oh! I paid way too much for that disc back in high school & upon listening even as a massive fan was like.. WTF???? However I did make a profit reselling it several years later to some random NIN obsessive in Japan.

I think "March of the Pigs" is my favorite moment of theirs. The video's pretty funny..

While I liked it quite a bit when it first came out, The Fragile has really grown on me in the last few years, mostly for the subtlety of the instrumental tracks. Also, the older I get, the less I'm able to stomach Trent's sometimes gratuitous use of the F-word. The Fragile isn't as marred as the previous stuff, save for the obvious exception.

Yeah, that was neat for like 2 seconds. I don't really like that live r&b vibe of totally ditching song structure for gospel clap alongs. I would so love for Trent to turn nin into a Golden Palominos type thing where he does everything but the vocals. That the rumored Aaliyah collaboration never happened is a shame.

tbh "Starfuckers" turned me off so much, particularly since there is sustained awesome from "The Day the World Went Away" through "Even Deeper", that I just never felt the desire to play (Right)

What are your thoughts on Reznor as a singer? The older I get, the more grating I find his vocals, but, conversely, the more I admire his composition and particularly arrangement skills.

I think his biggest issue as a singer is his infatuation with screaming. Like, it's often very effective, but not so effective that it doesn't start getting really, really old. Also, he does have a decent voice and it's kind of a shame that he likes to go ugly with it so often because it can be even more effective when he just sings some of this stuff, like for example "The Day the World Went Away".

It's not on this album but "The Great Destroyer" on Year Zero is IMO him really hitting a vocal stride, enhancing the power of the song in the process; I wish he did more tracks like that.

Yeah his screaming has never been particularly convincing. In general, he's often too nasal and sneery.

someone on the hoffman boards stated confidently it was sourced from that, which is a pretty quick turnaround. I didn't see the coachella set; but this is close to what the NoizeBoyz set was like when I saw him last year.

I think they are doing some live manipulation but the occam's razor here is that the triggered electronic instruments etc are not being twiddled that much and it reads as identical because it's being replayed

that fan bootleg from a couple weeks back that may or may not have used intercepted feeds off the IEM broadcasts for the band was pretty close, but wow did they not doing any real mixing. I'd be pissed if I were TR because it lacked any real vocal effects, vocals too high in the mix for NIN, lots of aesthetic errors

i was largely working off the vocals, which for some tracks are directly from coachella week 1 but for other tracks they're not. they are clearly doing something live because there's a video of them doing "sin" where they have a bunch of technical difficulties and have to restart the song

oh yeah, I think they're doing a lot of the stuff live and it's just really tight, barring technical difficulties

I know I posted it upthread somewhere, but I saw the band once in a small-ish place, and for the first two songs the house sound was not working, and anything you could hear at all was what was coming directly from what was on the stage (amps, monitors, etc.). Once Trent realized what was happening - essentially a really intense but virtually silent pantomime of rage - he got extra pissed and everyone had to leave the stage for a reset.

I’ve been thrifting for records for decades, and every once in a while, I find something really special. This is the tale of one of the most special records I’ve ever found.
Trent Reznor, of the band Nine Inch Nails, grew up in Mercer, PA, which is the town where I live. He went to Mercer High School, and he played in the 5M Marching Band and Jazz Band, in which my kids have also played. Trent has gone on to become a very famous songwriter and performer, and he’s also won a stack of Grammys, Oscars and Golden Globes for some of his film soundtrack scores.
Recently, I thrifted a copy of a Mercer High School marching band and jazz band LP from the early 1980s. On the side 2 record label, under a song called “Pressure Cooker,” is the name Trent Reznor, featured as a soloist on tenor saxophone.
This is quite possibly the first time Trent Reznor was featured on a professional recording. Until now, there has been no reference on the internet (at least, not that I can find) that even acknowledges the existence of this record. So I made a little video to share this rare recording of a young (11th grade?) Trent Reznor playing a sweet jazz solo on the sax. I’m very happy to be able to share it with you. 🎶🎷

Damn I grew up 10 min from there. I thrift for records sometimes in the surrounding towns but never thought to go there. Amazing.
