I started writing a long piece for the next print-edition of Last Plane to Jakarta called "1978: Barbra Streisand Invents New Country," but that next print edition keeps getting more and more unwieldy

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 00:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Look, it's "I Wish I Was Viva" Barbra! She really had a thing for those Factory broads.

She looks like Lisa Lisa on the cover of that Cult Jam/Full Force record.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 01:57 (twenty-three years ago)

okay dammit I've talked before about the absolute rooling brilliance of the ButterFly album -- she covers Bowie's "Life on Mars?", fer godssake!!! -- but the cover just shows a fly on a stick of butter. Can anyone locate and post the illustration from the back cover, which is a mad psychedelic Streisand-turning-into-a-butterfly sort of illustration?

oh and on the inside foldout she's lookin' braless and hott.

She reads the audiobook herself which surprised me. Not sure why, maybe it's more common than i thought.

piscesx, Wednesday, 29 November 2023 14:12 (two years ago)

I'd be surprised if she didn't.

jaymc, Wednesday, 29 November 2023 14:49 (two years ago)

Yeah she would never relinquish control of something like that. This is one of the themes that the book hammers into the ground.

Josefa, Wednesday, 29 November 2023 14:52 (two years ago)

I’ve seen a handful of those As Read By The Author audiobooks, not sure it’s always a wise choice.

Shifty Henry’s Swing Club (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 29 November 2023 16:04 (two years ago)

She’s charming in many ways but the relentless disingenuousness is just too much to take. She becomes a bore and then she doubles down on it.

― Josefa,

It's as if wants to project a vanished era's idea of "girlishness."

According to the Spotify page for the audio book it "includes extra anecdotes and [exclusive] music" and is also over 48 hours long.

this is honestly very impressive, I wonder how many days they tracked. doing an audiobook is very fucking tiring; you every time you say a word weird or skip a definite object or whatever you start that over, I guess in her cased the engineer just grabs it all and puts it back together instead of stopping, dragging back & punching (which saves a little time) -- but seriously, it takes a week to do 200+ pages, it's WORK.

Debbie Harry read her autobiography, it definitely gives you a different sense of the "voice."

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Wednesday, 29 November 2023 22:48 (two years ago)

apparently babs’ audiobook digresses from the actual book quite a bit with asides so yknow, babs being babs

I can only imagine. Just listened to the samples of yours, they sound pretty good, kudos. And they are still 50% off for the next few days.

Live at the Bon Soir is amazing. It's a shame they didn't have the noise reduction technology in 1962 to clean up the recording and make this her debut album. I know her actual debut won the Grammy for Best Album, but this live collection is better. The ease and relaxed humor she has at age 20 in front of what was purportedly a sophisticated crowd is almost uncanny.

you know i've been wondering if i should explore Barbra's catalog! i do love her voice.

Swen, Tuesday, 20 February 2024 15:24 (two years ago)

My two cents:

Get Live at the Bon Soir instead of her actual debut album.
My Name is Barbra and Color Me Barbra are great examples of her classic style.
Stoney End is perhaps the most successful of her "contemporary" albums.

Barbra Streisand... and other musical instruments is her most bizarre album.

Chris Molanphy's Hit Parade podcast just had an episode on her music and chart career, and I learned quite a lot!

I'm waiting for the biog to come out in paperback because i don't care who you are, that hardback can not be easily read by a human.

piscesx, Tuesday, 20 February 2024 16:13 (two years ago)

Chris made the case for its best form being audiobook, not least because song clips are part of it. Based on the shared snippet I'm inclined to agree!

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 20 February 2024 16:16 (two years ago)

Damn yeah that does sound good. Bono's is like that, so it must be A New Thing these days.

piscesx, Tuesday, 20 February 2024 16:27 (two years ago)

lol at Roslyn Kind up there, she's such a total half-Barbra!

Josefa, Tuesday, 20 February 2024 16:56 (two years ago)

one year passes...

I'd seen The Way You Were so many years ago that I remembered nothing except the ending and the early scene where the bluebloods heckle Babs at the rally. A lot of it is tripe, but...woof, talk about the miracles of star acting. Streisand is earnest, likable, and weird. Redford does some of his best acting when he argues with her or in that final ending when he realizes they're completely over as a couple.

Sydney Pollack complained that preview audiences hated the political stuff, but, really, I chow down on any movie with an extended scene about people's reaction to FDR's death.

Let us also consider what wonders Wikipedia reveals:

The following year, Stark asked Laurents if he was interested in adapting the original film for a stage musical starring Kathie Lee Gifford.

never really listened to her before but "Evergreen" is pretty amazing during the climax. she goes back and forth between this awesome high intensity celine dion thing and this gorgeous melty mellifluous olivia newton john warmth, with grace and fluidity. Is Streisand at her best during the big moments like these? when she's just singing all regular and mellow it's pretty boring, but when she pulls out all the stops here it's really awesome.
