I used to think Ne-Yo was muy sexy until I saw him without a hat. :/

Spo-Dee-O-Dee-Dopaliscious! (The Reverend), Thursday, 9 June 2011 00:22 (fourteen years ago)

the phrasing of the lyrics on fmbo totally reminds me of prince, the way he pauses between each line, the downward lilt, etc.

feel like I don't need to have a strong opinion on the-dream anymore tho

british sb power (dayo), Thursday, 9 June 2011 00:22 (fourteen years ago)

the chorus to fmbo kind of sounds like a fast car retread

totally but it's super-enjoyable nonetheless

hahahahaha

the-dream's car of the summer (tpp), Thursday, 9 June 2011 08:15 (fourteen years ago)

def. hoping for something *fresh* from him on love iv

fuck it i would still w with an album of retreads tho

the-dream's car of the summer (tpp), Thursday, 9 June 2011 08:19 (fourteen years ago)

the thing is i really don't mind it when terius doesn't bother with ~songcraft~, concentrating on ridic goonish punchlines and sweetspot production satusfies me immensely cuz they're kind of terius stripped to his essence. like one of my fav the-dream songs will always be "hit it on the road" which encapsulates a ton of what i love about him

the smoke cloud of pure hatred (lex pretend), Thursday, 9 June 2011 08:23 (fourteen years ago)

re: his lying, i dont think gravitas has ever been one of his strongpoints - his weakness as a singer/someone who can convey believable emotion is kind of both his achilles heel (yo dream! stick to producing etc) and what makes ppl seem to love him so much.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 9 June 2011 08:28 (fourteen years ago)

smh @ u dudes saying his career has peaked before the new bieber album has even dropped

the-dream's car of the summer (tpp), Thursday, 9 June 2011 08:48 (fourteen years ago)

lol uhhh wait, you lads are coming out with this blasé uninspired retread stuff only now after love king?? these two songs are so much more switched-on than that stuff i can't even

r|t|c, Thursday, 9 June 2011 09:34 (fourteen years ago)

even on the level of preaching to the converted (which i don't necessarily dispute) theyre infinitely more satisfying

r|t|c, Thursday, 9 June 2011 09:37 (fourteen years ago)

I said the same thing about some songs on love king it's just something that gets worse w time and continued repititions of the formula. Really surprised you think these are some big step above love king, feels like same old same old to me

lebroner (D-40), Thursday, 9 June 2011 14:42 (fourteen years ago)

Like I was willing to write my dampening enthusiasm off to my own fatigue circa love king, at this pt it just feels unavoidable

lebroner (D-40), Thursday, 9 June 2011 14:44 (fourteen years ago)

yeah idk, like i say i'm still coming to this from within the morbid terius bubble - i'm not nearly as invested as i was with the lvm material - but the general point is that this has got me back in the bubble to begin with

do think it's a bit sloppy to say "with time and continued repetitions" though, it's obviously the quality of the repetition we're disagreeing over rather than just some sort of automatic ennui kicking in

r|t|c, Thursday, 9 June 2011 15:11 (fourteen years ago)

k3v and finney been quiet, what r u guys saying

r|t|c, Thursday, 9 June 2011 15:13 (fourteen years ago)

i have no idea wtf he is talking about on twitter 98% of the time.

fwiw i was referring purely to his career as a solo performer -- dream and tricky aren't producing smashes as often as they used to but i don't doubt they could turn out rihanna or beyonce or usher's next #1

51 Cent (some dude), Thursday, 9 June 2011 15:41 (fourteen years ago)

lol uhhh wait, you lads are coming out with this blasé uninspired retread stuff only now after love king?? these two songs are so much more switched-on than that stuff i can't even

no. i came in very late, circa LK, and loved nearly everything on that record. went back and listened to the early stuff and found it all a bit samey when taken at once, but at least of equal quality. like both of these new tracks now that i've spent some time with them, but there's a noticable drop in immediate, jaw-on-the-floor quality. something's off...

And the piano, it sounds like a carnivore (contenderizer), Thursday, 9 June 2011 17:32 (fourteen years ago)

Again, i don't think either of these will be on the album so i'm not really worried about the kind of throw-away nature of them.

Number None, Thursday, 9 June 2011 17:35 (fourteen years ago)

yeah there is a single he's gonna play on monday. so who knows what these two are; they are freebies.

stately, plump bunk moreland (schlump), Thursday, 9 June 2011 17:38 (fourteen years ago)

naturally i have already steeled myself for them turning out to be lk session offcuts

r|t|c, Thursday, 9 June 2011 17:51 (fourteen years ago)

I don't really have any problem with more of the same.

Spo-Dee-O-Dee-Dopaliscious! (The Reverend), Thursday, 9 June 2011 17:56 (fourteen years ago)

fuck it, this shit is dope

J0rdan S., Friday, 10 June 2011 02:29 (fourteen years ago)

really is - i've been jamming to it all day. love the final coda. hear a lot of the grinding, machinelike beatwork of the "love vs money"s in body work.

pearsonic, Friday, 10 June 2011 02:32 (fourteen years ago)

the vocals on the verses of "body work" are pretty unusual by his standards & yeah i dig all the grinding & whirring of the beat

J0rdan S., Friday, 10 June 2011 02:36 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah. I've now listened to Body Work and Fuck My Brains Out 18 and 36 times respectively, so I guess I dig this.

J0rdan S., Monday, 13 June 2011 20:08 (fourteen years ago)

He's firm in his own desires but ultimately respectful towards the women in his life

uh

the smoke cloud of pure hatred (lex pretend), Monday, 13 June 2011 20:11 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah that line stuck out for me too

Number None, Monday, 13 June 2011 20:13 (fourteen years ago)

I guess it's an obvious dichotomy to draw but the whole "he's written some of the most successful pop hits of his time, but his solo career hasn't reached the same heights!" is a really boring hook for a story not to mention that it totally glossed over any nuance

J0rdan S., Monday, 13 June 2011 20:27 (fourteen years ago)

also it's been the-dream angle for at least 2 years now

plus it's...not actually that uncommon that songwriter dudes don't become stars in their own right? it's not like babyface became a household name outside of r&b fans either. sticks out more because that's changed a lot in recent years i guess (and yeah dreamer's solo material being of such quality)

the smoke cloud of pure hatred (lex pretend), Monday, 13 June 2011 20:30 (fourteen years ago)

Dream isn't as successful as Beyonce? Would ya look at that!

J0rdan S., Monday, 13 June 2011 20:31 (fourteen years ago)

He's firm in his own desires but ultimately respectful towards the women in his life

Such a classic example of a writer projecting his own ideals onto a subject to justify liking that subject. It's like every piece praising some independent rapper b/c he doesn't talk about "bitches and hos," even if that rapper still talks about women in kind of queasy terms.

Evan R, Monday, 13 June 2011 20:37 (fourteen years ago)

not a good piece

weird bibby fetish (forksclovetofu), Monday, 13 June 2011 21:28 (fourteen years ago)

actually he did!

The Edge of Gloryhole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 13 June 2011 21:32 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, Babyface was huge for a while.

Cue lex asking who Eric Clapton is

J0rdan S., Monday, 13 June 2011 22:21 (fourteen years ago)

Babyface was so massive that I have to remind myself of the fact. Apart from the hundreds of hits he wrote for every R&B star of the era (including the entirety of the Waiting to Exhale soundtrack), he had "Whip Appeal," "It's No Crime," "When Can I See You," among others, on his own.

Don't forget "Take a Bow"!

The Edge of Gloryhole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 13 June 2011 22:28 (fourteen years ago)

i basically have nothing to say about these 2 new songs other than i like the pre-hook part of "fuck my brains out", reminds me of "i could never take the place of your man" a little. and the part where dream tries to make like engine noises with his mouth, it shouldn't work as well as it does

bite this display name (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 14 June 2011 03:36 (fourteen years ago)

so yeah "fuck my brains out" is the realness, kinda whatever on "body work" even though it seems like it should push all my terius buttons - luckily "FMBO" doesn't need "body work" to work

jag goo (k3vin k.), Sunday, 19 June 2011 04:33 (fourteen years ago)

the hook on "fuck my brains out" is so great, so peak-era prince
