Heard "back that azz up" on the radio this morning -- was hoping that would place, but this is a fine consolation -- such a weird song imo, like juvie pretty much talks during his verses then the track opens into this super catchy hook

yeah it's an odd one, the verses barely qualify as rapping/rhyming

lol at Express Yourself showing up
― S'cool bro, I only cried a little (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 18:46 (thirteen years ago) link
"Ha" is definitely one of the weirdest songs to become the mainstream breakthrough for an artist (or their whole label, for that matter)

what's wrong with "Express Yourself"? wish i'd voted for it
that whole record is p great, albeit a bit too long
― WHO THE FUCK READS THE (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 18:47 (thirteen years ago) link
express yrself is a bit tame, also dre doesn't smoke weed you know
― WHO THE FUCK READS THE (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 18:48 (thirteen years ago) link
yeah I have this weird cognitive dissonance regarding "express yourself", like if anybody else made it I'd be like dope but its NWA so I'm like wtf

I must live in a cave, because I recognize the name Juvenile but this thread was the first time I ever heard a track of his. SUE ME.

re: Juve
Yah that song (Ha) made no sense to me in high school, took me a few months to come around to it.
Back That Azz Up is still my favorite club track.
― Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 18:50 (thirteen years ago) link
ok i lied next record has the best video ever regardless of genre
― WHO THE FUCK READS THE (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 18:50 (thirteen years ago) link

I guess this means 100 Miles And Runnin isn't going to place.
― PG Harpy (Doran), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 18:57 (thirteen years ago) link
I didn't know what to do with BOB - like, it's amazing but the rapping is totally incidental to its greatness, and I don't even think of it as a rap track so much as ... I don't know what really. I ended up putting it quite high in the end about #13 or so, it was the highest thing that I wasn't juggling as a potential #1.
― Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 18:57 (thirteen years ago) link
rapping is not really incidental on BOB

yeah the rapping on bob is sooooooo important. don't think it could have worked with 2 different mcs
― WHO THE FUCK READS THE (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 18:59 (thirteen years ago) link
I know! It's full of it. It's full of other stuff too though, it kind of transcends genre for me so didn't sit easy for me in a genre poll.
― Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 18:59 (thirteen years ago) link
lol yeah a guitar! it can't be in a hiphop poll!
― WHO THE FUCK READS THE (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 19:01 (thirteen years ago) link
ok that rakim vid is some bullshit here is the proper version

Is Kanye's line about hating paparazzi worse than the Nazis the worst lyric in the poll so far? Love the music on that song but his MCing is even slacker than I remember it.
Never heard Ha but it's great - weirder than I expected Juvenile to be.
xp I think it's fair to say that BOB seems to transcend genre, just like Get Ur Freak On.
― Strictly vote-splitting (DL), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 19:02 (thirteen years ago) link

This was #10 on my ballot, highest of my votes to place so far.
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 19:07 (thirteen years ago) link
Don't know why they cut the Lou Reed sample out of the single version (probz some backroom business), but that's what really makes the track.
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 19:09 (thirteen years ago) link
I spent all weekend listening to People's... such a dope dope DOPE album

Used to know someone who would steal car stereos to order - we'd joke that his theme song should be 'Can I Nick It?'

My number 2.
Bare bones (dusty drum, simple bass line) beat with pure complex lyricism. So great.
