Never heard of him before seeing him at Soundset the other day performing the song where he raps and cuts records at the same time. Like his voice and Funky 4 + 1 fandom.

This was my vote. Almost custom built to annoy goon crew people. But if Trip Hop's biggest failure was one of taxonomy - it wasn't trippy, it wasn't hip hop - then this is the antidote. A genuinely psychedelic record with loose, medicated rapping. The song Rock And Roll is amazing. (As most hip hop songs with rock and roll in the title tend to be.)
He's an amazing DJ. I've seen him do a set using Turkish psych, Anatlolian pop and the like as source material - fucking great.
― PG Harpy (Doran), Saturday, 4 June 2011 13:14 (fifteen years ago)
Paul's Boutique is no worse than Straight Outta Compton. [/challops]
I mean, title track aside, the rapping and the production sucks major balls.
Sure, it's well fucking exciting but it's not a good record.
Just like a tortoise/ full of rigor mortis.
― PG Harpy (Doran), Saturday, 4 June 2011 13:18 (fifteen years ago)
TBH this kinda description never sounds appetising to me. Seems like any random DJ set at a goverment-funded arts event.
― Tim F, Saturday, 4 June 2011 13:23 (fifteen years ago)
sort of a w/e list i guess - lots of relative placement weirdness. but i dont really know abt rap music idk. stuff i wouldve voted for that not many ppl did:
supa dupa fly, labor days, trap muzik, mr. scarface is back, grip it!, ill communication probably lots of nerdy backpacker shit...
the only thing that 'bugs' me tho really is the (very) low placement of life after death. love that record so much...
― SEX-MEN: Worst Ass (Lamp), Saturday, 4 June 2011 13:34 (fifteen years ago)
Tim F - We don't really have government funded hip hop in the uk... I'm a big fan of good scratch DJs using records with strong beats, no matter where they come from. But I know what you mean, I've seen DJ Rupture do a set using Eastern European music and it was shockingly bad - like Gogol Bordello with a donk on.

xpost Ha, I'm not butthurt about your opinions - in fact I agree with a whole bunch of the assessments in your long post. I just think that if you can't find to vote during a month-long window then you shouldn't bitch about the results. Just one more vote could have tipped any of the 100-150 placements into the top 100.

should've voted on this and just thrown 60 points at the score. or i would've if i knew it wasn't gonna make it in. i don't listen to enough full albums of anything to make a decent list.

i'm not a regular on the hiphop threads and i lurk mostly so my single post is fairly inconsequential. but anyway big props to a hoy hoy cos this poll has thrown up loads of things i've heard of before but not heard. as a 40sthg my listening prefs were more of the late 80s and early 90s hence my no1 vote for tuff crew, who continue to not get the recognition i think they deserve for 'back to wreck shop'. dj too tuff does great work (partic on 'what you don't know'), and there's a great flow to the whole album. here are a couple of highlights. /out
