"Me & Jesus the Pimp" probably the best written rap song of all time, or close second to "Fats Cats and Bigga Fish"

Divine Styler - Spiral Walls Containing Autumns of Light 1 1
The Brotherhood - Elementalz 1 1

AKA the Tuomas vote

I did actually vote for Elementalz (the best straight British rap album I've ever heard), but Spiral Walls is way too rock for me to ever rate it. Divine Styler's Wordpower 2 was my #16 though, as far as dystopian synthetic sci-fi rap goes, that one is almost as good as Can Ox.

Tuomas, Friday, 3 June 2011 21:32 (fifteen years ago)

Might as well post my full ballot:

ILM rap music album poll: post your ballot

says the guy who doesn't care for the chronic or ready to die

so ilxor can understand

fwiw while I don't have any use for the chronic or ready to die I'm not really complaining about their being on this list. anyone who follows hip hop knows these are canonical works that had a massive impact, are beloved by many, and have been referenced/copied/paid homage to countless times. it's all the other small potatoes bullshit on this list that annoys me more tbh.

metally ill (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 3 June 2011 21:57 (fifteen years ago)

Great work A hoy hoy. You are an 'energy magnet, human conductor, rap maniac and female seducter' as Tunes so rightly pointed out.

PG Harpy (Doran), Friday, 3 June 2011 22:06 (fifteen years ago)

Awesome work and entertainment A hoy hoy!

Funny that I'm the only vote for Long Live the Kane given all the love. I'll put it on right now in the air conditioning!

Pete Scholtes, Friday, 3 June 2011 22:42 (fifteen years ago)

It's A Big Daddy Thing did better, only 11 spots from making the list

like every collaborative list the best stuff is in the back end. Rap even more, since most of the proper canon stuff does very little for me

anyway, my favourite rap record is Da Drought 3

Wu-Tang Clan - Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) 28 (1) 956 dope record, classic for all time, not as good as cuban linx or illmatic tho imo, never mind a few others
Nas - Illmatic 24 (3) 901 surprised it aint number one although it would be only a slightly less boring pick then 36
Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique 22 (4) 865 wtf is this doing up so high. gtfo
Public Enemy - It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back 21 (3) 787 sure, not my top 5 but its def deserving of its spot on any list like this
The Notorious B.I.G. – Ready to Die 21 749 not as good as life after death, there are 1-2 whatever joints on this. that jam that samples '7th heaven' is whatever
Raekwon - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx 21 (2) 737 probably the best record mentioned so far
Dr. Dre - The Chronic 19 591 beyond classic, an inconsistent record w/ a huge impact, much like paid in full. production sound here is half nu-dre and half NWA dre. best joints are the singles + 'deez nuts'
Outkast - Aquemini 19 581 this is where spottie ottie & i diverge for once, i think this is >>> atliens but that might be bcuz i was a late pass on outkast & just got into them w/ rosa parks \oO/ but i prefer this perfect midpt between southern rap perfection of atliens & pop perfection of the best parts of stankonia
De La Soul - Three Feet High and Rising 18 (1) 580 overrated as hell, the worst of the first three De La records
GZA/Genius – Liquid Swords 19 559 overrated as hell, still classic but should be outside the top 20-30 imo
A Tribe Called Quest - Low End Theory 16 (1) 544 classic, fine w/ this placement, maybe a bit higher.
Jay-Z – Reasonable Doubt 16 510 overrated slightly, def not the best jay album
Public Enemy - Fear of a Black Planet 13 489 havent listened to this in a minute but i never connected w/ public enemy like that
a tribe called quest - midnight marauders 13 (1) 473 ok w/ this placement. i prefer LET
Eric B and Rakim - Paid in Full 18 473 this is def not the best Eric B & Rakim in terms of front-> back quality; let the rhythm hit em str8 murders it on consistency. this was the point of impact though. like 'follow the leader,' a few of the best rap songs ever made, a bunch of ehhh
Ice cube - Amerikkka's Most Wanted 15 457 i havent listened to amerikkkas most & death cert in a minute, i should pull those out again. if its + the kill at will EP, as was issued on CD, then I'm down w/ this ahead of DC
Mobb Deep - The Infamous 14 (1) 457 duh all time classic & probably the first record that should be really higher imo
Jay-Z - The Blueprint 17 427 overrated. outside the top 50 imo. really dug it when it came out but that was mostly for a fresh production sound that has since been run into the ground
Ice Cube - Death Certificate 13 (1) 404 fine placement
Snoop Dogg - Doggystyle 15 389 should be higher. one of the best party records of any genre, all time
NWA - Straight Outta Compton 15 (1) 370 dope LP obv, no problem w/ placement. best songs are incredible
outkast – atliens 10 368 im cool w this
Outkast - Stankonia 13 344 this is a bit high but still a great record
Pharcyde - Bizarre Ride II... 13 323 there are 5-6 songs here that i love & have since i was like 10. i think its slightly overrated on this poll, but its a fun-ass record so im not complaining too much
Gravediggaz - 6 Feet Deep / Niggamortis 10 317 never really got into this for some reason. too cartoony
Cannibal Ox – The Cold Vein 10 312 lol. this would be a cooler record w/ me if it wasn't ranked ahead of, like, all Scarface, Tupac, DJ Quik, Mac Dre, E-40, ETC ETC ETC.)
Digital Underground - Sex Packets 10 310 DOPE casette, CD version overrated here. If you include the 12" of 'freaks of the industry' w/ the full love hangover sample it gets +1 pt from me
kanye west - college dropout 10 289 overrated but still pretty classic. kanyes workout plan went from my favorite to least favorite song on this once it became a single
Clipse - Hell Hath No Fury 12 284 gtfo x 10000
De La Soul - De La Soul Is Dead 10 276 dope ass record, prob a bit underrated
UGK – Ridin’ Dirty 7 272 dope record, i prefer super tight
Ghostface Killah - Supreme Clientele 11 263 dope record, glad it beat that fishscale bs
Gang Starr – Moment of Truth 7 (1) 262 great record but hard to earn should be well ahead of it, cant believe that didnt even finish. kids today smh
Run DMC - Raisin' Hell 9 259 this record is aite, nothing really tops peter piper. I think 'rock box' & 'beats to the rhyme' are better than anything on this
Wu-Tang Clan - Wu-Tang Forever 8 253 cool LP but being way overrated here cmon
LL Cool J – Mama Said Knock You Out 8 (1) 249 i need to listen to dudes catalog again to decide where id land on this but im w/ dan that 'around the way girl' is the best single off this
DJ Shadow - Endtroducing 8 247 gtfo x1000
Ghostface Killah - Pretty Toney 9 245 dope record, probably a bit overrated being in this list but I do like it a whole bunch
Beastie Boys - Check Your Head 8 239 gtfo x100
EPMD - Strictly Business 10 230 dope
De La Soul – Bahlo-o-ne Mindstate 9 225 dope
2Pac - All Eyez on Me 8 224 should be much higher imo & me against the world should have made it
Dizzee Rascal - Boy In Da Corner 9 222 gtfo x1000
The Notorious B.I.G. - Life After Death 9 (1) 217 should be higher imo
Madvillain - Madvillainy 11 216 love this record. i should be mad at its placement which feels too high but i think heads underrate it as much as onion av club nerds overrated it
De La Soul - Stakes Is High 4 213 this is p overrated here but it is a good record. not top 100 material
Method Man - Tical 8 208 mad overrated. everything 1st wave wu does not belong & outside the singles (i do rep for 'release yo delf' & in fact have the 12") its pretty weak. meth vs chef is cool tho. ironman should be higher
dr. dre - 2001 8 207 should be higher imo, changed the game
slick rick - great adventures of slick rick 9 207 should be much, much, much higher, like top ten
ODB - Return to the 36 Chambers 9 206 this is a cool LP but we dont really need two solo ODB records in the top 100 & whens the last time you listened to this all the way through? i like the 2nd one better
Jeru The damaja - The Sun Rises In The East 8 204 i have sentimental attachment to this from my days w/out being able to grow facial hair / rocking the discman / lumpy hoodie & baggy jeans combo but really despite some hot beats its kinda overrated here. I would drop it down quite a few places & make room for, like, Word...Life or a lord finesse record or something
Dr. Octagon - Dr. Octagonecologyst 7 (1) 203 overrated & i prefer sex style
black star - mos def and talib kweli are black star 7 197 4-5 great songs, otherwise overrated
Big L - Lifestylez of the poor and dangerous 7 192 fun visceral record, overrated as a statement abt life or whatever. would rather have mac dre or young bleed or someone above it but maybe thats my 'i have a life story & interesting way of getting it across' vs. 'im a punchline ninja for all time' bias
Cypress Hill - Cypress Hill 8 189 dope ass record. not to be racialist but where are the beatnuts??
Main Source - Breakin' Atoms 7 188 dope ass record
Clipse - Lord Willin' 6 186 i like this LP pretty well. had some cool singles and "i'm not you" is amazing. probably slightly overrated here, considering theres, like, no big daddy kane or kool g rap on the list
Ultramagnetic MC's - Critical Beatdown 8 177 dope-ass classic. one of the most underrated on this list. how non-ghostface people rap matters!!
Ghostface Killah - Fishscale 7 175 gtfo x100000000000
Goodie Mob - Soul Food 5 (1) 175 dope ass record
Missy Elliott – Miss E: So Addictive 7 175 dope ass record
Lauryn Hill - The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill 7 174 this belongs in the canon for all time but is not a personal fav of mine although i do unreservedly love several of the songs
Ghostface Killah - Ironman 8 173 this is an inconsistent, poorly sequenced, great record
J Dilla - Donuts 7 168 zzz
Ice-T - O.G. 6 167 dope record, left this in a caselogic inside a backpack that i left on the train many moons ago :( still have the cd case
DJ Quik & Kurupt – Blaqkout 7 164 i love this but cmon, top 100??? its arguably not even in quik's top 5. certainly not ahead of rhythmalism
Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP 5 162 i havent listened to this in years
Eric B and Rakim - Follow the Leader 8 162 best opening tracks of any CD ever
Boogie Down Productions - Criminal Minded 3 159 dope record although not my fav KRS
A Tribe Called Quest - People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm 6 158 outside of 'wallet' & 'bonita' i never loved this
T.I. - King 7 156 eff this losing to trap muzik & eff all yall
MF Doom – Operation: Doomsday 6 154 dope record, probably better than madvillain in the long run
Organized Konfusion – Organized Konfusion 5 154 how did this beat stress? still a cool lp but i'd only put one in the top 100
Beastie Boys – Liscenced to Ill 6 151 eh
ODB - Nigga Please 7 148 good record
Devin the Dude - Just Tryin' ta live 5 143 fun left field one here, glad yall chose the right record
big pun - capital punishment 6 142 I think this LP is a lil overrated but def some classics on it
Boogie Down Productions - By All Means Necessary 4 141 dope LP
Camp Lo – Uptown Saturday Night 5 141 all-time dope tracks on this
Run-D.M.C. – Run D.M.C. 8 141 this is prob my fav dmc
Black Sheep - a Wolf In Sheep's Clothing 6 139 classic
DJ Quik - Rhythm-Al-Ism 5 (1) 139 classic obv, personal fav
Kanye West – Late Registration 6 138 his later work has made this seem better and better
Organized Konfusion - Stress: The Extinction Agenda 4 134 great LP one of my favorites. Did you know that rockwilder produced one of the most boring beats on this LP??
Heltah Skeltah - Nocturnal 4 133 cool record, surprised smif n wessun didnt make it
Black Moon - Enta Da Stage 7 132 cool record, actually my fav of theirs was that remixes/rarities comp tho
Wu Tang Clan - The W 4 132 some great-ass songs on this but nowhere near the 100 best rap albums ever
Mos Def - Black on Both Sides 4 130 cool record
Cypress Hill - Black Sunday 6 129 i havent listened to this in ages. u effin stoners
scarface - the fix 5 129 dope record, not the best scarface at all tho
lil wayne - tha carter II 5 128 i dont have a 'take' on lil wayne any more, have just been avoiding him
Pete Rock & CL Smooth - Mecca and the Soul Brother 5 128 dope ass record, a lil long, might prefer the 2nd one overall but this has their best song
Gang Starr - Step In The Arena 4 125 dope ass record, again prefer hard to earn. might take daily operation over it too
LL Cool J – Radio 7 125 need to hear again
Kool Keith - Black Elvis 4 122 never heard
3rd Bass - The Cactus album 4 119 pretty great album iirc
Viktor Vaughn – Vaudeville Villain 5 114 this is a good 1 but not something id put on this list / i actually preferred the beats on geedorah
Quasimoto – The Unseen 4 112 havent listened to this in ages
Kanye West – Graduation 5 109 ehhhhh
Son of Bazerk - Bazerk Bazerk Bazerk 4 108 this was a really fun pick for #100 tho i dont listen to it much

Some tracks are on the cassette that aren't on the cd. It was discussed upthread.

'hip hop doll' is missing, gutfest is shorter, etc
