tbrr the only thing REALLY wrong with this poll in a "that should not be there" sense is DJ Shadow but since that gave me a great lol I don't mind

low-rent black gangster nicknamed Bootsy (DJP), Friday, 3 June 2011 19:08 (fifteen years ago)

, it's interesting to see how NYC rules even now

NY hasn't produced a great rapper in 10 years

I voted for illmatic, I would vote for it a million times. I can't even say how important it is to me.

brodie to the max (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 3 June 2011 19:28 (fifteen years ago)

common being better in theory than reality because in reality he's kinda dull shockah

WHO THE FUCK READS THE (a hoy hoy), Friday, 3 June 2011 19:29 (fifteen years ago)

My mom hired me to paint the garage the summer that illmatic was out, I was p bad at painting so it took me forever. I listened to illmatic over and over imagining queensbridge. Who was ill will? Who was cormega? It felt like a whole world existed inside your headphones.

brodie to the max (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 3 June 2011 19:33 (fifteen years ago)

But, seriously, "Life After Death" vs. "some 'grime' album" is no argument that any grown man should engage in.

"Me & Jesus the Pimp" probably the best written rap song of all time, or close second to "Fats Cats and Bigga Fish"

Divine Styler - Spiral Walls Containing Autumns of Light 1 1
The Brotherhood - Elementalz 1 1

AKA the Tuomas vote

I did actually vote for Elementalz (the best straight British rap album I've ever heard), but Spiral Walls is way too rock for me to ever rate it. Divine Styler's Wordpower 2 was my #16 though, as far as dystopian synthetic sci-fi rap goes, that one is almost as good as Can Ox.

Tuomas, Friday, 3 June 2011 21:32 (fifteen years ago)

Might as well post my full ballot:

ILM rap music album poll: post your ballot

says the guy who doesn't care for the chronic or ready to die

so ilxor can understand

fwiw while I don't have any use for the chronic or ready to die I'm not really complaining about their being on this list. anyone who follows hip hop knows these are canonical works that had a massive impact, are beloved by many, and have been referenced/copied/paid homage to countless times. it's all the other small potatoes bullshit on this list that annoys me more tbh.

metally ill (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 3 June 2011 21:57 (fifteen years ago)

Great work A hoy hoy. You are an 'energy magnet, human conductor, rap maniac and female seducter' as Tunes so rightly pointed out.

PG Harpy (Doran), Friday, 3 June 2011 22:06 (fifteen years ago)

Awesome work and entertainment A hoy hoy!

Funny that I'm the only vote for Long Live the Kane given all the love. I'll put it on right now in the air conditioning!

Pete Scholtes, Friday, 3 June 2011 22:42 (fifteen years ago)

It's A Big Daddy Thing did better, only 11 spots from making the list
