re: Doggystyle, I remember really hating "What's My Name?" and actively avoiding any and everything related to the album when it first came out as a result, which meant that when a friend played the entire thing for me and I heard "Gin and Juice" for the first time several months later it was my first real "holy shit what the fuck was I thinking hating on this?" moment with an artist

huh, kinda surprised that people rate that over Death Certificate. is it the Bomb Squad angle?

Predator's great but I think it's really weighed down by the skits and some of the weaker stuff on the second half

how many votes did you get overall, sam?

I voted for Predator but much lower than the other two. Highs are freakin' high on it.

Predator has a bunch of great songs ("When Will They Shoot" is maybe my favorite Cube song) but I felt it was a slight comedown from DC--not quite as cohesive.

I voted for The Predator more for the memories - played it to death in 92.

I got The Predator first and worked backwards through Cube's solo stuff, so there is a lot of "first full album by that artist" nostalgia tied up in it for me

also, "When Will They Shoot?" is fucking perfect

yeah When Will They Shoot is easily the best opening track on any of his albums. I remember reading a review (Time magazine, I think?) of that when it came out and it was all about the lyrics - how angry/hateful they were, Rodney King trial, etc. - and not a SINGLE WORD about the music. This seemed par for the course for a lot of Ice Cube reviews iirc. Which struck me as really strange because if nothing else that first blast of the Queen sample + X-Clan + Club Nouveau is such a holy shit moment, what a monster sound.

I think Cube was really pissed after the Predator came out and no one in the rap world had his back against all the criticism--plus the decrease in political content in rap overall. Probably explains his retreat into G-Funk and dumb ass West boosterism.
