ATLiens was my #3

it has elevators on it
it does have elevators on it
― backpacker van beethoven (Edward III), Friday, 3 June 2011 15:32 (fifteen years ago)
This album is responsible for my obsession with hip-hop.
Love that. Personal history plays such a big part.
xp I still think Love Below has more keepers than it gets credit for but the self-indulgence is so immense that I can't blame people for throwing out the baby with the bathwater.
― We need to talk about Bevan (DL), Friday, 3 June 2011 15:33 (fifteen years ago)
ludacris's crib has an elevator in it iirc
― a http://bit.ly/kv895M (some dude), Friday, 3 June 2011 15:34 (fifteen years ago)
why would a baby need an elevator
― metally ill (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 3 June 2011 15:35 (fifteen years ago)

Top 3 times I listened to ATLiens:
3. The third time I bought the cd because it had been stolen twice: I was 16, had just gotten my driving license, and had my best friend (also big into Outkast) with me. We couldnt find it anywhere and after hours we finally found it at a local Wherehouse store. Paid $18 for it, steeeep. It had been a few months since it had been stolen so I hadnt listened for a while. Anyway, we drove in complete silence all the way to Monterey CA (about 30 minutes) and back without hitting skip once. Fell in love with the album all over again.
2. The night I graduated high school, after the all night party; the dudes and I rolled back to my friends house (about 7 am) where we had lounged pretty much every day for the last 12 years. We popped in ATLiens, put it on blast, and played another few hours of Golden Eye. Just laughing, being teenagers, having that feeling of 'will things be the same ever again.'
1. The first time I heard it when I was 14. Was at a friends house who had a proper stereo and was way into rap, which I loved, but wasn't fully obsessed with yet. He showed me the cd with the naked chick on it and said "you gotta hear this." He put it in the changer and played the title cut. That single listening experience shifted my music taste completely.

atliens is fucking great. such a low key album in a way only the true greats can pull off imo.
nwa kinda sucks /challops
― WHO THE FUCK READS THE (a hoy hoy), Friday, 3 June 2011 15:43 (fifteen years ago)

― shalmaneser (tpp), Friday, 3 June 2011 15:44 (fifteen years ago)
Please do, who has the time to check ILM out on a summer weekend?
― Tuomas, Friday, 3 June 2011 15:45 (fifteen years ago)
The sheer rush i felt the first time i played 'Compton' and heard that opening track was probably the most intense reaction I'd had to any music up til that point in my life.
― pandemic, Friday, 3 June 2011 15:45 (fifteen years ago)
NWA does kinda suck, but was very important to tons of people, including me. Nothing like it had hit my tiny New Hampshire town when it dropped.
But because it does kinda suck, I had it at #46 on my ballot.
― EZ Snappin, Friday, 3 June 2011 15:45 (fifteen years ago)
ATLiens is the OutKast record I never really liked until like five years ago, now it's probably my favorite. And yeah as an album Straight Outta Compton actually kinda sucks - the good stuff is pretty amazing but there's a lot of terrible shit on it.
― joygoat, Friday, 3 June 2011 15:46 (fifteen years ago)
no way i love this album
― shalmaneser (tpp), Friday, 3 June 2011 15:47 (fifteen years ago)
"she wants lobster?, huh i'm thinking burger king"
― pandemic, Friday, 3 June 2011 15:47 (fifteen years ago)
So patchy but the highs are stratospheric - likewise the cultural impact.
― We need to talk about Bevan (DL), Friday, 3 June 2011 15:48 (fifteen years ago)
whoah that is WAY too low for SOC. now I am worried.
― metally ill (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 3 June 2011 15:48 (fifteen years ago)

― WHO THE FUCK READS THE (a hoy hoy), Friday, 3 June 2011 15:49 (fifteen years ago)
Glad I didn't vote because there are SO MANY of these I haven't heard but mad kudos to whoever put the Spotify playlists up there.
Looking forward to the joek #1s. Don't fuck this up ILM.
― Matt DC, Friday, 3 June 2011 15:50 (fifteen years ago)
SOC is one of those seminal works, so central to the genre - even if the first few tracks set the bar so high nothing else on the album can come close I still don't think there's very much out and out terrible on the album. even the lesser material is still really good, barring maybe a couple tracks.
xp

Doggystyle still sounds fresh. Doggy Dogg World is an all-time top 3 music video, my favorite track on there too.

So glad that ATLiens beat Stankonia.

re: Doggystyle, I remember really hating "What's My Name?" and actively avoiding any and everything related to the album when it first came out as a result, which meant that when a friend played the entire thing for me and I heard "Gin and Juice" for the first time several months later it was my first real "holy shit what the fuck was I thinking hating on this?" moment with an artist
