I remember when this dropped and "capping on fools" was all the rage. Like however many good and unique ya mama jokes you could come up with and how effective you were as a "clowner" determined your status around campus. Then I heard Ya Mama and my life was flipped upside down, I had a trunk load of material that no one knew about, my status rose very quickly, ladies jocked, etc.

wow once we got this high w/o any Outkast i thought maybe Aquemeni would be the only one to place
― a http://bit.ly/kv895M (some dude), Friday, 3 June 2011 15:11 (fifteen years ago)
Good run of albums I placed in my own top 30. I thought ATLiens might have placed further down.
― We need to talk about Bevan (DL), Friday, 3 June 2011 15:13 (fifteen years ago)
that is way too high for stankonia, though i didn't vote.
― horseshoe, Friday, 3 June 2011 15:13 (fifteen years ago)
Also, three more classic album covers.
― We need to talk about Bevan (DL), Friday, 3 June 2011 15:14 (fifteen years ago)
Love Stankonia (my favorite Outkast record) but didn't vote for it.
― EZ Snappin, Friday, 3 June 2011 15:14 (fifteen years ago)
ATLiens>Aquemini>Southernplayilistic>Stankonia
― Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Friday, 3 June 2011 15:15 (fifteen years ago)
stankonia's weird cuz I don't think of it as a good album but there are a lot of good songs on it? maybe it's all the stupid skits.
― backpacker van beethoven (Edward III), Friday, 3 June 2011 15:16 (fifteen years ago)
I like all 5 of the first Outkast albums equally
― low-rent black gangster nicknamed Bootsy (DJP), Friday, 3 June 2011 15:16 (fifteen years ago)
The skits are pretty rough. Easy to skip though.

Skits aside, it's solid front-to-back and the first half is astonishing.

I get the feeling there is a great disparity when it comes to ranking outkast albums
― backpacker van beethoven (Edward III), Friday, 3 June 2011 15:19 (fifteen years ago)
I don't rate anything after Stankonia.
― Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Friday, 3 June 2011 15:19 (fifteen years ago)
Oh, I forgot Idlewild. I'm sure I'm not the only one. (Though The Train is A+)
― We need to talk about Bevan (DL), Friday, 3 June 2011 15:20 (fifteen years ago)
Idlewild is better than The Love Below. Not really saying much with that statement.
― EZ Snappin, Friday, 3 June 2011 15:22 (fifteen years ago)
Have love for so much of Stankonia though. Snappin & Trappin, Gasoline Dreams, Humble Mumble, Slum Beautiful + all the singles + all the other ones.
― Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Friday, 3 June 2011 15:23 (fifteen years ago)
I'm glad we all agree the love below is dung

Aquemini really should be top ten buuuut vote splitting means itll come soon i bet
― i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Friday, 3 June 2011 15:25 (fifteen years ago)
I think I voted Stankonia over Aquemini but am fine with any of their first four placing, all are really solid, consistently amazing
― metally ill (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 3 June 2011 15:26 (fifteen years ago)
but that's the best one
― shalmaneser (tpp), Friday, 3 June 2011 15:27 (fifteen years ago)
(ATLiens)
hopefully aquemini will come next and then we can stop talking about outkast
― backpacker van beethoven (Edward III), Friday, 3 June 2011 15:28 (fifteen years ago)
Love Below is such a ... problem. their are a lot of good ideas on it and a handful of great hooks/tracks but EVERY song is like a minute longer than it should be, and the more obvious "experiments" (I can do drum n bass! I can play acoustic guitar! I like jazz!) mar the album really badly
xp
― metally ill (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 3 June 2011 15:28 (fifteen years ago)
This album is responsible for my obsession with hip-hop. Not a song I skip ever on that album, still listen to it frequently too.
― Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Friday, 3 June 2011 15:28 (fifteen years ago)
ATLiens got a higher # of points with 3 fewer voters than Stankonia -- big enthusiasm gap there
― a http://bit.ly/kv895M (some dude), Friday, 3 June 2011 15:28 (fifteen years ago)
"ATLiens" title track my fav outkast tune i think

the "throw your hands in the ayurrrr" hook was the first thing that made me sit up and pay attention to Outkast. love that hook
― metally ill (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 3 June 2011 15:29 (fifteen years ago)
and the more obvious "experiments" (I can do drum n bass! I can play acoustic guitar! I like jazz!) mar the album really badly
"i like prince!" all over that muhfuckah

ATLiens was my #3
― shalmaneser (tpp), Friday, 3 June 2011 15:30 (fifteen years ago)
it has elevators on it
it does have elevators on it
― backpacker van beethoven (Edward III), Friday, 3 June 2011 15:32 (fifteen years ago)
This album is responsible for my obsession with hip-hop.
Love that. Personal history plays such a big part.
xp I still think Love Below has more keepers than it gets credit for but the self-indulgence is so immense that I can't blame people for throwing out the baby with the bathwater.
― We need to talk about Bevan (DL), Friday, 3 June 2011 15:33 (fifteen years ago)
ludacris's crib has an elevator in it iirc
― a http://bit.ly/kv895M (some dude), Friday, 3 June 2011 15:34 (fifteen years ago)
why would a baby need an elevator
― metally ill (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 3 June 2011 15:35 (fifteen years ago)

Top 3 times I listened to ATLiens:
3. The third time I bought the cd because it had been stolen twice: I was 16, had just gotten my driving license, and had my best friend (also big into Outkast) with me. We couldnt find it anywhere and after hours we finally found it at a local Wherehouse store. Paid $18 for it, steeeep. It had been a few months since it had been stolen so I hadnt listened for a while. Anyway, we drove in complete silence all the way to Monterey CA (about 30 minutes) and back without hitting skip once. Fell in love with the album all over again.
2. The night I graduated high school, after the all night party; the dudes and I rolled back to my friends house (about 7 am) where we had lounged pretty much every day for the last 12 years. We popped in ATLiens, put it on blast, and played another few hours of Golden Eye. Just laughing, being teenagers, having that feeling of 'will things be the same ever again.'
1. The first time I heard it when I was 14. Was at a friends house who had a proper stereo and was way into rap, which I loved, but wasn't fully obsessed with yet. He showed me the cd with the naked chick on it and said "you gotta hear this." He put it in the changer and played the title cut. That single listening experience shifted my music taste completely.
